Today, AMD and Xbox announced plans to bring FSR 4.1 to the ROG Xbox Ally X and Xbox Series X|S consoles in the future. Until now, Sony hardware has dominated the upscaling conversation with its QSSR tech, but it looks like Xbox is set to have its own horse in the race.
FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) 4.1 is AMD's impressive upscaling tech, which renders games at a lower resolution before using machine learning (ML)-powered gaming technology to improve visual fidelity and boost performance.
In the video above, AMD GM Jack Huynh announced plans to bring the updated FSR tech to Radeon RX 6000 series graphic cards, alongside plans to roll out FSR 4.1 to various Gorgon and Strix Ryzen 9 processors. More importantly, he invited Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet to come on out and share the news that it's coming to both Xbox Series consoles and will be optimised for ROG Xbox Ally X / X20 handhelds.
Van Vliet also shared word on their continued partnership with AMD to power the upcoming Project Helix which will leverage "FSR Diamond to power what comes next".
"Today, we're excited to take another step forward together with FSR4.1 coming to Xbox. Now, we've worked very closely with AMD to optimize this technology, giving developers another powerful tool for great performance and visual quality for players. Now, whether you're playing on an Xbox Ally handheld, as well as coming soon to Xbox Series S and X consoles, and this is just the beginning. Our teams are continuing to work together across hardware and software. And there's even more ahead with Project Helix, leveraging FSR Diamond to power what comes next."
There's no timeline on when the technology will actually start implementation on current-gen hardware, but we're very excited at what FSR 4.1 can do for the Xbox Series S and Xbox handheld experiences in particular.
