Xbox Expects The 'Component Crisis' To Get Worse For Consoles In 2027

The big news dominating the world of Xbox last week was the announcement of price increases for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, and it appears we could be getting more increases across the industry over the next year.

In the statement that accompanied last week's news, Xbox specifically stated that console storage and memory prices are expected to double by the fall of 2027, which seemingly is around the time Project Helix is set to release.

Here's that part of the statement:

"Unfortunately, console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5x and we expect another doubling by the fall of 2027. The entire consumer electronics industry is struggling with the current components crisis, but the effects are particularly hard on consoles."

So, what happens in regards to Helix? Xbox boss Asha Sharma has spoken about this already, mentioning that her team will "innovate" to reduce the price of the console, and that they're working on it as we speak.

Perhaps they'll be able to find a solution for Helix that allows them to cut costs, but at least in the case of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S (as well as the PS5, Switch 2 and Steam Machine), prices seem more likely to keep rising rather than fall at any point in 2027.

For what it's worth, our friends over at Push Square recently reported on a rumour that the PS6 could cost almost $1000 to create right now, and you'd have to think that Xbox's Project Helix won't be too far off that mark either.

There's still time for Xbox to figure out an innovation plan though, and here's hoping they'll find a way to produce an affordable system that still delivers a worthy next-gen leap. We're just glad we're not the ones trying to find the solution!
