If you missed the Nintendo Direct earlier this week, you might not have seen that Konami released the Super Bomberman Collection as a shadow drop — it's literally available right now on the Xbox Store for £15.98 / $19.99.
This a collection of the following classic Bomberman titles:
- SUPER BOMBERMAN [Japanese Version / US Version / European Version]
- SUPER BOMBERMAN 2 [Japanese Version / US Version / European Version]
- SUPER BOMBERMAN 3 [Japanese Version / European Version]
- SUPER BOMBERMAN 4 [Japanese Version (English localised version available)]
- SUPER BOMBERMAN 5 [Japanese Version (English localised version available)]
- Bomberman [Japanese Version]
- Bomberman II [Japanese Version]
In addition to the games, you also get some extra features — a Boss Rush challenge mode, the ability to save or load at any time, a rewind feature, screen filters, the option to listen to soundtracks, and a gallery of art work and dev materials.
At the moment, we're not seeing many professional reviews for the Super Bomberman Collection on the web (In fact, the only outlet that seems to have reviewed the collection so far is Game Critix, which gave it a 4.5/5 score), but there are a few user reviews over on Steam, where the game currently holds a "Very Positive" rating.
Here are some examples of the Steam reviews we've spotted:
VALIS on Steam: "If you're wondering what the guy with the Bomberman avatar thinks about the surprise Super Bomberman Collection, he thinks you couldn't ask for more. It's outstanding. Seven games including two newly translated ones (SB 4 and 5), a new boss rush mode, achievements, art gallery, music gallery, cloud saves, scan lines, rewind, save states... for twenty bucks! Feels like a birthday present even though I bought it."
dandanboone1 on Steam: "Game Preservation at its finest, multiple language roms, manuals, box art, concept art, all region carts / box art / manuals. Translations of previous untranslated games. All for 20$ as of writing. A steal and a perfect way to replay and introduce people to these classics. Glad to see Konami caring for their legacy."
Electrix on Steam: "Hopefully this becomes an introduction for many new players to Bomberman, and thus making for a very good reason to make a follow-up collecion, including the much-beloved Saturn Bomberman (!!!). Online multiplayer would be great too, but for the time being, I'm just happy that we Bomberman fans are getting a few crumbs."
Good stuff, then! Unfortunately, it's harder to get a read on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S versions right now, as there are barely any reviews for the game on the Xbox Store. Three of them are five stars but don't give any details on performance, while another is one star and says they can't get past the title screen. Take that for what you will!
With that in mind, we'd love to hear from you if you've bought the Super Bomberman Collection on Xbox — how are you getting on with it, and which is your favourite game in the package so far? Let us know down in the comments.
We'll leave you with a little sample of Xbox footage that we found on YouTube earlier today:
