Xbox Ally Owner Explains How They Added Real Game Boy Cartridges To Their Handheld

There are so many amazing things you can do with the ROG Xbox Ally, but here's one we'd never anticipated — adding real, working Game Boy cartridges to it! That's what one owner has been showing off on Reddit today, and it's got us inspired to try something similar ourselves.

In their post a few hours ago, Reddit user alanpep advised that they used a GB Operator to make this work — a low-cost device that allows you to play and manage Game Boy cartridges on your PC. They then disassembled and reconfigured it "so it would fit behind the handheld", and downloaded the Epilogue Playback software to run the games (a "play and preservation platform for original game cartridges").

You can see the results in the video below:

Since posting this video, alanpep tells us that they've "3D printed a shell for it to protect the boards", and their next plan is to add a "USB-C cable with an L Bracket so the cord doesn't protrude out from the top as much".

The reception to this on Reddit has been largely very positive, with many commenters pointing out how impressed they are with the idea, but some have questioned the motive behind it. The responses from the OP are pretty humorous — they simply state that they did it "because I could".

Here's an example:

In terms of us at Pure Xbox, we're really impressed with the OP's creativity here, and we're also thankful that they shared a bunch of images with us for this article — it's pretty surreal to see Game Boy cartridges and even the Game Boy Camera mounted to this thing.

We'll leave those down below, and we encourage them to keep up the good work!
