Bethesda Wants To Do More Shadow Drops Following Hi-Fi RUSH & Oblivion Remastered

In recent years, Bethesda has employed the 'shadow drop' technique on multiple occasions; where the game(s) in question is simply released without any prior announcement or marketing. It's done this with 2023's Hi-Fi RUSH and 2025's Oblivion Remastered - and it sounds like the Xbox publisher wants to do it again.

Speaking with GamesRadar, Bethesda's Tom Mustaine says that the team "had a real successful shadow drop with Hi-Fi RUSH" - adding that BGS boss Todd Howard has "wanted to shadow drop things for a long time".

"We had a real successful shadowdrop with Hi-Fi Rush through Xbox and through Bethesda,

Todd Howard, the boss man, he's wanted to shadowdrop things for a long time because it's so great to be able to say, 'Here's the thing, get it today.' It's very valuable."

Mustaine says that he "hopes it's not the last" we see from Bethesda in terms of shadow drops, also believing that "it was great to own the internet for that day and, you know, give people exactly what they want the moment we talk about it." These surprise releases are definitely exciting and we can see why a developer would want to do more of them.

Ultimately, Mustaine says "I don't have any ideas of what would be next", but it sure sounds like Bethesda has become a fan of the short and sweet shadow drop. Maybe the team will surprise us and not talk about The Elder Scrolls 6 again until it actually releases? That would be something!
