With so many great games getting a release on Xbox this week, we've been trying to highlight a few of the lesser-known ones over the past few days - and a great example is Metal Eden, which just released on Series X and S yesterday.
This game is an "adrenaline-rush sci-fi FPS" in which you play as an advanced battle android who can use enhanced parkour skills to engage in high-octane cybernetic warfare.
In other words, it's all just a big excuse to blast some enemies! Metal Eden seems to take inspiration from the likes of DOOM, Ghostrunner, Quake and various other classic titles, and it's developed by Reikon Games - otherwise known as the team behind the 2017 twin-stick shooter Ruiner.
Looking at the reviews. Metal Eden currently has a Metacritic rating of 74 - and here's what some critics are saying:
Comicbook (4.5/5)
"Metal Eden is a throwback to when shooters took heavily from DOOM, but updates that dynamic by honing in on the new era of DOOM titles. It rips, it tears, and it’s one of the best shooters to grace the genre since DOOM Eternal."
GameReactor (8/10)
"Metal Eden is the most ambitious project from Polish developer Reikon Games, who previously created the small top-down isometric cyberpunk shooter Ruiner. They've done a pretty good job here, but there's definitely room for improvement on the technical side. However, if you can overlook the occasionally uneven graphics, Metal Eden is a good, solid sci-fi action experience."
GameRant (7/10)
"Metal Eden is worth recommending to those who love challenging, fast-paced, sci-fi action similar to games like Doom — that is, if the price tag matches its length. Otherwise, this might be one of those "wait-for-sale" games, but it's nonetheless one that is worth a play once it becomes worth the money."
Stevivor (6/10)
"Ultimately, Metal Eden is a close to a great game, but falls flat. It’s short, repetitive, and gets in its own way when it comes to a core combat loop."
As you can see, the reviews are a little bit mixed right now, although Metal Eden also has a "Very Positive" rating on Steam as things stand - and again, a lot of people over there are talking about the DOOM comparisons in particular.
The good news is that you can try this one for free! Metal Eden has a demo from April that's still available on the Xbox Store, and if you end up really liking it, the full game is now available to purchase for £29.69 / $35.99 for Series X and S.
