With the ROG Xbox Ally handheld right around the corner, we're starting to see more and more videos coming out about the device - showing off how certain games perform on both the standard version and the more expensive "X" version.

One of the games that's getting a lot of attention is DOOM: The Dark Ages, which has notoriously struggled on a lot of PC handhelds this year, but a new analysis (and actually, multiple of them) reveal how it can reach a surprisingly high frame rate on the ROG Xbox Ally X specifically.

This is achieved by using frame generation, which means the results are a little bit controversial, but still prove that you can definitely go above the 60FPS mark with DOOM: The Dark Ages on this device.

Here's a quote from the Tom's Guide analysis video at the top of the article:

"The numbers I managed to get are insane. So, for example, I ran DOOM: The Dark Ages on here, and with 1080p at Medium (settings) with FSR turned on, I'm able to get 83 frames per-second on average."

"Moving onto Gears of War: Reloaded, this was set to a mixture of Ultra and High settings - that was a rock solid 60 frames per-second. These numbers are unheard of in gaming handhelds."

And it's not just Tom's Guide - we've seen other people testing DOOM: The Dark Ages on the ROG Xbox Ally X over the past few weeks, achieving similar but not quite as impressive results for whatever reason.

Here's a test from YouTuber and social media user Cary Golomb, for example:

Now, if you're unaware what FSR is, it's the abbreviation for AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution technology, which works to both enhance your games visually and generate frames to improve performance.

Some people say the frame generation can make games feel a bit "off" at times, which is why the "insane" FPS comes with a caveat here, but it all depends on your preference - it's certainly a nice option to have with games that support it.

It still feels like it's very early days in terms of performance comparisons for the ROG Xbox Ally handheld right now, and we might be waiting until launch to get a proper idea of how it stacks up alongside the likes of the Steam Deck, Lenovo Legion Go and the existing ROG Ally devices. At first glance though, it seems like pretty great hardware!
