PUBG Getting Free Current-Gen Upgrade, Xbox One Version Going Offline This November

Krafton has today announced a couple bits of major news for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds - as the team begins to properly shift its battle royale shooter over to current-gen systems. This November, PUBG will get a full current-gen upgrade that brings 4K / 60FPS gameplay to Xbox Series X, while the Xbox One version of the game will be delisted and get taken offline at the same time.

The PUBG developer explains all of this in a new blog post; one that details the game's full current-gen specs while providing reasoning behind the decision to ditch last-gen consoles. We'll start with that last-gen explanation:

Starting November 13, PUBG Console will be supported only on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This shift is a necessary step toward aligning PUBG Console with current-gen consoles.

As part of this transition, we will be ending support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It weighs heavily on us to deliver this news to our console players who have enjoyed PUBG on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One for so many years.

This was not a decision made lightly. It comes after long and careful consideration, in pursuit of the continued growth and long-term future of PUBG Console.

On the same day that the Xbox One version of PUBG goes the way of the dodo, an upgraded version of the game will go live (free via Smart Delivery on Xbox). Krafton has given us the full specs for each version of the game here, and the Xbox Series X version in particular is looking rather impressive. It matches the PS5 Pro version in terms of resolution and frame rate!

  • Xbox Series S Resolution Mode: 1440p / 30FPS
  • Xbox Series S Performance Mode: 1080p / 60FPS
  • Xbox Series X: 4K / 60FPS
  • PS5 Pro: 4K / 60FPS
  • PS5: 1440p / 60FPS

The team has also provided a couple of comparison screenshots between the current-gen versions before and after the incoming update. These are taken from a base PS5 - but they at least give us an idea of the level-of-detail changes we can expect to see following the game's current-gen upgrade:

So, there we have it. PUBG for Xbox One is officially closing its doors roughly eight years after launching into Xbox Game Preview in 2017, and folks will have to move over to a current-gen version of the game to keep acquiring those chicken dinners for years to come.
