The fine folks over at Digital Foundry have been taking a look at the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Cyberpunk 2077 this week and stacking it up against various other console releases, including the Xbox Series S.

It's the Series S that makes for the most compelling comparison, with the outlet highlighting just how good Microsoft's low-priced machine is at handling the game, both in terms of visuals as well as its potential for 60FPS performance.

Firstly, when it comes to resolution, the difference between the Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch 2 varies from 0% to over 70% depending on the situation, with the Series S benefiting from a 73% resolution advantage over the Switch 2 in its performance mode - a mode that targets 60FPS on the Series S and 40FPS on Switch 2.

"Against Xbox Series S, resolution differences vary from nothing to upwards of 70 percent in favour of the Series S - the larger numbers may well be down to the fact that we often hit the max 1080p on Switch 2, so there may actually be overhead beyond that we just aren't seeing. Looking at the performance mode differentials, there is a big gulf: an average 73 percent resolution advantage for Series S which is targeting 60fps vs Switch 2's 40fps."

Meanwhile, the performance of the Xbox Series S version is described as a "class apart" compared to the Switch 2, with Microsoft's console achieving a mostly rock-solid 60FPS compared to the "obvious frame-rate drops in heavier areas" in the Nintendo system's 40FPS version.

"It's no surprise to see Series S exhibiting zero issues whatsoever handling Cyberpunk 2077 at the 30fps limit - the Zen 2 cores in current-gen consoles are over twice as fast as the Jaguars in last-gen, so Virtuos's comments are proven out. In performance mode with a capped 40fps, Switch 2 finds its limits, with obvious frame-rate drops in heavier areas, while Series S powers through at 60fps, with just occasional drops. It's a class apart."

It's a "convincing" win for the Series S overall, then, although Digital Foundry points out that the Switch 2 release still performs "very nicely" in general - and let's not forget this is a system that's built to be a home console and a handheld.

To conclude the analysis, Digital Foundry goes back to the idea that 60FPS Xbox Series S games should "easily" port across to the Switch 2 - something that was suggested in a recent developer interview - and advises that it's viable (but not necessarily at the same frame rate), although "CPU-heavy current generation titles may need more work".
