Roundup: Here's What The Critics Think Of Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered

Another three old school Tomb Raider titles land on Xbox today for the very first time - with The Last Revelation, Chronicles and The Angel of Darkness making up the new Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered collection from Aspyr and Crystal Dynamics.

As you may have seen, we delivered our Pure Xbox verdict earlier today - noting that these new-to-Xbox Tomb Raider titles "are worth adding to your library" in our 7/10 rating of the collection.

So, we'll throw a link to that review down below, alongside some quick summaries of what other critics are saying about Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered so far.

Eurogamer (4/5)

"It's an odd place to leave Lara. We went through so much with her in the Core games, and here she is now, clad in double denim, standing outside a warehouse in Paris, kicking a dog in the head while a chopper circles overhead. These three games aren't always Lara Croft at her best, then, but as far as I can tell they've been cared for as if they are, which is what a good remaster should do. And in certain moments, as is always the case with this series, they still shine."

Press Start (7.5/10)

"Despite some heavy visual overhauls and some nice additional inclusions, the truth of the matter is that these games are just not as strong as the original trilogy. Still, regardless of how you feel, it's hard to deny that Aspyr have done good work here, and these are easily the easiest and most accessible way to play some games that many ardent fans would call underappreciated or misunderstood."

Pure Xbox (7/10)

"While The Last Revelation is the only game in here I'd consider a classic, both PS1 era games are still worth playing, especially now that Aspyr has given us the option to run through them with OG visuals at 60FPS. Despite being the newest title in here, The Angel of Darkness has aged the worst, and remains a stark reminder as to why the series moved to a new studio after this release. Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered's adventures might not be essential, but they're worth adding to your library as this era of Lara Croft makes its Xbox debut."

Gaming Bolt (7/10)

"Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is just about everything fans could have wanted. All the great quality of life features from I-III return here in addition to new restored content for Tomb Raider VI. While this remaster doesn't completely fix the problems with the black sheep of the series, Tomb Raider VI, it does make the experience much better. Like the first collection, IV-VI Remastered is a huge value for what you get and is a must-buy for fans of the series or classic games."

Tech Radar (3/5)

"Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered delivers a welcome visual overhaul to The Last Revelation, Chronicles and The Angel of Darkness with excellent character models, detailed textures and revamped lighting working together to wonderful effect. The modern control schemes across the collection are frustratingly cumbersome but some great quality-of-life improvements and the excellent photo mode features make this remaster a must for longtime fans."

Checkpoint Gaming (6/10)

"Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is enjoyable, but there are several other action-adventure games that simply do it better. If you like what Tomb Raider has offered so far, you should happily jump into this trilogy. Otherwise, better and cheaper alternatives like the first series of remasters, or the Legend trilogy may prove to be smarter options."

Worth Playing (5/10)

"Some previously cut content makes the games feel like there has been some evolution. The problem is that the games don't feel as good as the trio of titles that came before it. From a preservationist perspective, it's fine to have these titles in a more accessible form. If you have some nostalgia related to these titles, then you might get a kick out of replaying them with a modern lens. Those who are discovering these games for the first time will wonder what the fuss was all about."

At the time of writing, Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered has an OpenCritic score of 67, although it's worth baring in mind that that's only based on a handful of reviews so far. Still, the rating lands right around our Pure Xbox review score, and this collection is out now for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
