Warner Bros. Wants To Move Away From 'One And Done' Console Games

You'd think that after the success of Hogwarts Legacy and the disappointment of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, Warner Bros. would try and follow in the footsteps of its recent Harry Potter title. Well, apparently not as the company wants to continue focusing on live service games instead.

Speaking on a recent webcast (via GameSpot), WB Discovery gaming boss J.B. Perrette talked about the road ahead for WB Games and what direction it wants to take. In essence, the team is thinking about ways that it can create games like Hogwarts Legacy that are ongoing rather than "one-and-done". Here's a quote where Perrette speculates on what's next for WB:

"Rather than just launching a one-and-done console game, how do we develop a game around, for example, a Hogwarts Legacy or Harry Potter, that is a live-service where people can live and work and build and play in that world in an ongoing basis?"

The Warner Bros. boss claimed that AAA console gaming is a 'volatile' market right now, which is probably a fair judgment to have. Still, we're not sure how Suicide Squad: KTJL is a better model going forward than the likes of Hogwarts Legacy, which ended up being one of best-selling games of 2023.

Just a couple of weeks ago, WB admitted that Kill The Justice League had "fallen short of expectations" in Q1, after almost nine years of development time. We'll have to see where things go next for the company, but we were really hoping for a traditional sequel to Hogwarts Legacy after rating the game highly early last year!
