A huge topic of conversation has centred around the lack of true next-gen games since the launch of Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. With the pandemic, huge install bases on last-gen systems and the usual crossover period, it has felt particularly dry. But we've had something pretty consistent to substitute that with - next-gen upgrades. Some of our favourite games have received free enhancements to take advantage of the Xbox Series X|S hardware, but is it enough to persuade Xbox fans to upgrade this early?
Let's look at the facts. There are hundreds of games now optimised for Xbox Series X|S, the majority of which are eligible for Smart Delivery. With this comes faster load times, higher resolutions and increased frame rates. For the most part, the majority of these are free of charge and are as simple as booting up your console and installing a patch. It's something new for this generation, as previous eras have encouraged a wave of remasters.
While we still get those, they're nowhere near as predominant as they were thanks to Smart Delivery. It feels like every week a new game we own is getting a lovely boost and injecting a new bit of life into our titles. Just recently DOOM Eternal had some ray tracing and FPS increases, while A Plague Tale: Innocence is set to receive a next-gen upgrade this week. What's even better is that both of these games are also included with Xbox Game Pass.
How Xbox has handled these upgrades has been nothing short of seamless, too. As mentioned before, Smart Delivery is infused into most of the titles, and instead of just being marketing jargon, it actually adds more than you think. Take DOOM Eternal, for example. You can currently play the game on your Xbox One, buy an Xbox Series X tomorrow, upgrade the game on that console and continue where you left off - it's as simple as that. This is something which PlayStation 5 users unfortunately aren't blessed with a lot of the time. As highlighted by our sister site Push Square, DOOM Eternal has a free upgrade, but doesn't support save transfers.
There could be an argument made about the lack of next-gen specific games for sure, and we wouldn't blame anyone for thinking that. Free upgrades of existing games isn't going to tickle everyone's fancy, and some users perhaps aren't as interested in boosted visuals and increased frame rates. At the end of the day, it's all about the games, and if you're done with your Xbox One library, it's a fairly dry time.
So, is an Xbox Series X|S worth the upgrade for these next-gen enhancements alone right now? Some will argue yes, others will argue no. There's no right or wrong answer, but it's interesting to see where everyone stands. The full next-gen experiences will come with games such as Starfield and Redfall next year, and even Microsoft Flight Simulator later this month, but is the current catalogue worth it for now? You tell us!
Let us know your thoughts on next-gen upgrades in the comments below.

It and Gamepass already having won me over during the Xbone era were definitely factors that pushed me to get a Series X, as well as backwards compatibility. I know it isn’t a huge factor for everyone, but being able to just play versions of Lost Odyssey, Ninja Gaiden Black and most of Rare’s catalog with a load time decrease and bump in resolution is just…nice.
This gen has felt abit pointless so far, could of waited atleast another year without getting the ps5/series S, it's been 7 months and only one true next gen AAA game has come out (ratchet and clank), I don't class demon souls as its just a remake and returnal wasn't a AAA, and the medium had last gen graphics. With other next gen games also coming to previous gen consoles I do wonder what was the point in me spending nearly £800? So far this is the most dissapointed I've felt for a new gen ever, even the first 7 months of the wiiU brought me more excitement 🤣.........😢
The only reason I wanted to buy a series x was because my disc drive on my xbox one broke and it didn’t seem like I could fix/replace it. So far I’m enjoying it, but I definitely could have waited as it feels no different from the xbox one.
I only really got a Series S to get a smaller console than my Fatbox One and I've transitioned to downloading only now (even bought all my physical games digitally in sales because I couldn't be bothered changing the disc and you have to install games anyway). Only downside is Series S didn't get the 60fps upgrade for games like Dead Island and Dying Light. Really p*beep*d me off. Also got the S for instant Sea of Thieves mermaid teleport.
Here's my take on it. Long read alert. I've had the Playstation/Nintendo combo for as long as I can remember. Last year I couldn't get a hold of a PS5 (shocker) but was given a Series S as a surprise by my SO. Before that I never cared much about Xbox. Ironically this is actually a good thing for several reasons.
1, I haven't played any xbox exclusive games before so even though Gears, Halo and Forza are old, they are new to me. And the newer releases are superb IMO.
2, Game Pass is a stroke of genius. I have literally played more games since the Series S launched than I did for the entire last generation on PS4. I've tried games I never would have considered (due to price and or peak of interest) and been having a lot of fun with it.
More reasons why I'm very positive to this launch. I don't use smart delivery myself but I get why it's smart. I love Quick Resume! Jumping between games definitely feels Next-gen to me.
Finally, and this is where I will lose you. I don't care that Xbox doesn't have a lot of next-gen exclusive games yet. That is not a deal breaker for me. I don't care if anybody with an xbox one or ps4 for that matter gets to play some of the games I get to play at a higher frame rate or whatever. It doesn't matter to me. Nothing truly amazing will come until the devs master Unreal 5 anyways. I am very positive about the future with true next-gen games coming and I don't mind jumping in early on this generation. I've already gotten too much fun and entertainment out of my Series S than I thought would be possible.
Xbox won me over. I have the switch for nintendo exclusives like Pokémon and Smash. It’s also the only system my distant siblings play so it’s how we mostly keep in touch is through gaming. I had a PS4 after the 360 and WiiU and have always had a mid tier computer/laptop for hobbies and games.
I tried pc game pass in the beta period and just loved games that I knew I wouldn’t purchase. I hardly ever buy games I can’t ultimately play with a friend or family. But my pc was built specifically for video and audio engineering so the games ran at 30-45 fps and gaming on a laptop can get old quick.
My PS4 really started to wane on me. I hated how the controller was. No charge, tiny button placements and thumb sticks wore down or got gross rather quickly. Plus I don’t really play the exclusives. Hardly ever coop or online. Mad they didn’t release TLOU2 without multiplayer.
And I loved my time in the beta and the 360 era. Gears, halo, forza. Gears is my favorite third person shooter and halo does sci fi fps really well. Forza is sublime.
Tricky question. The upgrades alone isn’t enough for me to buy a new Xbox, but that with the upcoming slate was more than enough to convince me to pick one up. I haven’t regretted it at all. Could I have waited? Sure. But knowing I would end up getting one eventually, there was really no reason not to go ahead and get one and enjoy the faster loading times and upgraded performance while I wait for the new games to come down the pipeline. I’m extremely excited about the games Xbox has in the pipeline.
For me the Series X has been worth every penny, the only game I've finished that has released since next gen is RE Village. At the moment I'm flicking between Metro Exodus and Yakuza Like a Dragon, with Metro in particular looking pretty sensational, plus the added auto HDR for my older games.
It's definitely been a slow start to the generation but its about to pick up in the next few months. Still some of the upgrades I've seen so far have been great and games like Sea of Thieves feel so much better to play at 60fps and look stunning too.
The best part though is not being charged $10 per game to actually use the hardware I've already paid for, unlike a certain other platform holder and I can honestly say its the best new console I've owned for over a decade
I'm an xbox hardcore so i'm gonna say yes, But to the casual gamer probably not..
Totally worth it. Being able to play games that look better, load faster with more FPS is what it’s all about. Loving my Series X and game pass. It genuinely is the best deal in gaming.
It’s all in the right direction and very good value for money and smart delivery is seem less, had no issues at all.
Once FH5 and hopefully a very good Halo then into next year it gets even better.
Just wish third party titles were on game pass day of release.
I loved my 360, but completely skipped the Xbox One generation, as I was quite underwhelmed by that launch. Jumping back in with the Series X has been awesome with Smart Delivery! I can pick up some of the best titles for the One dirt cheap, and get them fully optimized for my new hardware. Once this feature was announced, I was totally sold on getting back into the xbox world.
I buy a new console to play games I cannot get elsewhere. A new console needs exclusive games to define its existence otherwise why not just shove an SSD into an Xbox One X?
PS5 is winning this race so far because it has a strong library of exactly that whereas the Xbox Series X has zero compelling reasons to buy at the minute and probably for the next year.
I will however pick up a Series S but only because I can finally have a console that competently emulates the Dreamcast and GameCube.
I can't answer this without bias. I love to play on Xbox so I would get a Series S or X anyway and I did. So far experience has been great on the Series S. Game pass is awesome, there is always something new to play and xbo exclusives all there. Quick resume is one of the best features the console has, it's so fast to get back in game after a coulpe hours, you turn on the console and done, that's it, it's ready to play. Most of the optimized games had 60fps upgrade on Series S and that alone was pretty cool. You can fell fluidity that you can't on Xbox One. So far Xbox Series S had been pretty much worthy.
A mixed bag of responses, I suppose. First, I got a series s. Compared to my og xbo, it's a great upgrade and all I could get a hold of. Second, my digital games, that are supported by smart delivery, awesome, not to mention fps boost. My backlog is huge, so waiting for the real games to come out, is bearable. Now the bad. I got a series s, so my physical games that would benefit from smart delivery, are stuck on the og xbo. But it is, what it is. First world problems.
Absolutely but I have caveats:
Most visual upgrades (resolution and raytracing) can be impressive but get lost to most people’s subconscious over time, and some players honestly might not notice them be it due to their TVs or eyesight.
However, there are two things that are almost impossible to not notice, or to go back to:
60fps
Fast load times.
If you ever gotten tired of doing “quick travel” on The Witcher 3, then you will definitively love playing on a Series X even if the game has no official support or upgrade.
If you play some game that could be fun but for some dumb reason had choppy frame rate, you might love how smooth it plays on Series X EVEN if it had its FPS capped at 30, but much more if it happens to get 60fps one way or another (FPS boost or X|S upgrade.)
The biggest warning is: once you play on a Series X, it will be hard to play anything but the best made games on your PS4, Switch or even secondary Xbox one x.
@RadioHedgeFund “ PS5 is winning this race so far because it has a strong library of exactly that”
“Strong library” seems a little enthusiastic. What games make up the strong library? Demon’s Souls, R&C, and Returnal? “Compelling” is very subjective. I enjoy R&C, but I have no interest in Demon’s Souls or Returnal. I AM really excited for Horizon Forbidden West, however, and even moreso for God of War. Up until this point, I’ve gotten more value out of Gamepass and performance upgrades on the Series X, than I have from the PS5 exclusives that are available.
This is a question I have been asking myself since I got my Series X on launch day. On one hand I was deep in the quarantine here in the U.S. at the time and anything mildly exciting was worth doing at the time. I am a huge Call of Duty fan and pairing the 120fps multiplayer with a new lg oled was almost worth buying the series x all by itself. I play hundreds of hours a year and 120fps almost feels like a cheat code. Also, I bought 2 years of gamepass with the ea pass work around. Gamepass is a game changer, but I didn’t need the series a for it. I do feel like I would have been perfectly fine with the Xbox one X I was using for another year, and it is kind of lame that there aren’t any mind blowing next gen games yet, but that is how the 360 was until Gears came out. At the end of the day, since it was not a financial hardship I believe it was worth it for me.
@Tharsman I agree, I have an old Xbox one s in the basement and I thought I would play it when my wife was watching tv in the living room. More often than not she ends up watching tv in the downstairs living room because it’s hard to play on the old hardware. Although the kids don’t seem to mind nearly as much, they are content with the Xbox one S.
@Luigi_Skywalker if there is something kids seem to have plenty of, it’s time. I’m old, my leisure minutes in this world are counted and now that I know I don’t have to waste them on loading times, I refuse!
I have had a few chances to get a second series X, and seriously considering going for it for my second tv precisely due to what you say. Kept holding that back thinking I might rather use that money on a PS5, but Sony keeps annoying me…. That’s another story another place and time though.
It's worth it because of quick resume, faster loading times and fps improvements. On top of that, Auto HDR and free remasters. Besides, the next-gen games are coming.
Playing Forza Horizon 4 at 60 fps with high-quality graphics and Sea of Thieves at 60 fps (or 120!) is like dreaming. I loved backwards compatibility on Xbox One, it was the reason I got one (when I already had a 3DS, a Wii U and a PS4), but Series X improves everything, old and new, becoming my favourite console ever. It's not just powerful but efficient and quiet, the next-gen version of Xbox One X.
I own both a PS5 and XSX. For the reason above and others, my Xbox gets about 85% of my console playtime, PS5 about 15%.
@Hypnotoad107 whilst it is no Nintendo lineup it is better than nothing and it does give PS5 owners a sense of pride.
Microsoft have nothing yet.
@BlueOcean couldn't agree more, its the perfect blend of new state of the art gaming and making some classic games look absolutely stunning as well. It's a dream having a console where I can play the latest Resident Evil game or Yakuza but then just a few seconds later I could be playing Daytona USA or Tales of Monkey Island. Its this perfect blend of modern and classic gaming all with enhancements and game like Sea of Thieves look absolutely amazing.
Both this and PS5 are great consoles but Sony have soured that somewhat with them being less then honest about their intentions and their scummy business practices of charging you extra per game to use the hardware. Even without that there are more games I want to play on my Series X today then on PS5 and many more upcoming over the next few years
It's a feature I wouldn't buy a system for but it's an excellent bonus that adds value to the Series X.
I now own a series X. I am not into these high tech games that require a lot of effort to play. Best thing so far is how quick it loads, and boots.
I'm certainly glad I managed to get a Series X, from a tech stand point it certainly feels like next gen. Smart Delivery, Quick Resume and FPS Boosts are all brilliant and much more noticeable on games that I have played on both generations. As someone has stated earlier the instant mermaid teleports in Sea of Thieves are amazing.
Although the lack true next gen experiences is kind of disappointing the line up of games to come looks incredible and will be a formidable catalogue by the end of next year. With game pass I'm never short of something to play or at least try anyway.
Could I have waited to upgrade? Definitely. Would I go back now? Certainly not. Don't think I would be able to play Sea of Thieves or Warzone on my One X now. Getting the "first blood +100" pop up in warzone lobbies quite often is strangely satisfying 🤣
@SacredPYRO my stepson and I play Sea of Thieves on Series X and One X and I can sail away before he even spawns into the game 😅
Its nice, but for me not really worth the upgrade. Although saying that, when I go back to the Xbox One X it does seem sluggish by comparison.
The SSD and loading times is worth the money alone! I found that a bigger game changer than 4k graphics tbh. The ability to just fire up the xbox/ps5 and start playing within 60 seconds is amazing, especially if your game time is limited.
of course it does worth it, the only problem I can see is the NVMe SSD drive space, with every game takes a free update it must be played from the internal SSD so here comes the space problem, I have a USB3 External 8TB HDD for every other game, but now that more games demaned the internal drive I started to move around games, seagate xpansion driver seems a must buy now...
@carlos82 haha, I play with my brother and niece who both play on PC and I always wait a few minutes before joining their game so I'm not sat waiting about. Also due to the insta merms I am now solely in charge of jumping off at islands to fill my pockets.
@Hypnotoad107 agree with this take completely. Neither has a “strong library”, yet.
I think it depends. Honestly if i had an Xbone or a One X i likely wouldn't have upgraded right at launch. The upgrades are amazing but i usually don't adapt new tech right away. Since I had a PS3 and was looking at jumping back into gaming i decided i was going to get a launch console for the first time in my life and I'm not regreting it at all. But if you're not a tech snob sticking with last gen and upgrading down the road is totally fine. Looks like Series X/S exclusives will be on the Xbone through cloud anyways so you will still get to play everything. When you do upgraded though you will never be going back...so don't play it at a friend's house if you're not looking to upgrade. It will ruin the experience of last gen for you pretty quickly
@UltimateOtaku91 All I had on PS2 was Mgs2 at launch. All I had on 360 was Cod2 and Oblivion.
Have you not experienced many console launches? 😂
I think to be honest, it's mostly the SSD, and Game Pass that does it for most people. Either way, I still wanted a Series X.
Fun little story, I actually had a pre-order with GameStop Ireland, and they never got it out to me for months. So I rang them and asked to cancel my order cos I had given up waiting. I eventually gave in and settled for a One X from my local CeX, but literally not even an hour later after I got home with it, my workmate rang me and told me Currys had loads in their store ready to be taken, first come first serve. Never in my life had a drove more quickly to a shop.
As a Series S owner, I can honestly say the S "enhancements" have been hit or miss. Some have been great, but others are basically just the One X enhancements ported over. There are a lot of games I still play on my One X because it has the superior version.
That said, the games that have been built from the ground up specifically for Series S and X have been great. I haven't been disappointed in the S's performance at all in that regard. I can't wait for this gen to get into full swing and we start seeing more games that were designed from the start to take advantage of the hardware.
YES!!! (that was easy)
it want's me to write more... OK...
Of course it will depend on the person, but it's been my favourite Series X feature so far. Re/playing Dishonoured series, Prey, Doom, Forza H4, Ori WotW, Jedi Fallen Order, Alien isolation and many more at higher or smoother framerates and/or better resolutions has been a dream. Lets not forget loading times and quick resume (one of the best next gen features). On some games like Prey and the Dishonored's it's literally a huge evolution with load times and FPS boost.
@XxEvilAshxX the biggest downside is the Series S playing One S versions of games, they should have made it capable of at least playing One X patches
@RadioHedgeFund “ it does give PS5 owners a sense of pride.
Microsoft have nothing yet.”
You really think that there isn’t anything that Xbox owners can feel pride in? I could list some stuff.
@Hypnotoad107 There are many reasons to buy a Series X/S console but first party exclusive titles are not one of them.
It wasn’t always this way. I still regard the 360 as the best home console ever made. It’s list of exclusives was fantastic and I don’t even like shooters! I was sold on the promise of the Xbox One from day one. I already used my 360 for all my TV and music so that first day sales pitch had me in.
But then Microsoft killed all their exclusives, got rid of all the cool multimedia features and set themselves down a path they are only now recovering from.
If anything, PS5 owners must feel a bit ashamed because of the extra costs involved, the smaller SSD with no easy upgrade, the save files and upgrades issues and Sony's dishonest marketing.
Ratchet & Clank is more shooter than previous games and has the teleport gimmick but the worlds aren't that big. The true next-gen games haven't arrived yet but in the meantime Xbox is offering much more and basically free.
Finally, while Sony has a reputation for cinematic games that reviewers seem to adore, the announced Xbox games look more interesting than Sony's sequels. Subjective, I know, as subjective as the sentence "Sony's exclusives are better".
But perhaps, the new Nintendo Switch is the worthy upgrade we've been waiting for:
