We were today years old when we realised that there's a special method to eject your Xbox Series X discs in the case of an emergency. To be honest, most, if not all disc drives come with this, so we perhaps should have realised, but it totally slipped our minds. We can only imagine others haven't thought about it as well, so here's how you do it.
It's actually pretty simple. On the base of the console is a tiny little hole. Pop a pin in it and push down until the disc starts to emerge from the console. Easy, right? If you ever find yourself in a pickle or loss of power to the console, it's a good trick to know if you need to salvage a disc.
This is actually something that's been around since the beginning of the Xbox era - although it's a bit easier now. There's tons of videos on YouTube that can teach you how to do it, along with the instruction manual to your console. Unfortunately, since it's one of those things you don't necessarily check until there's an issue, you may never know!
Judging by the fact these videos have millions of views between them, we're inclined to believe we're not the only ones who didn't know (maybe wishful thinking on our part). Either way, this may help you out in a jam (no pun intended), so you can thank us later!
Have you ever had to manually eject an Xbox disc? Let us know in the comments below.

I wish they would introduce ejecting game discs from the controller.
Sony has had this since the PS3 in the game sort of options menu.
Things would just flow a bit better.
Come on Microsoft you have it in the blu ray disc menu when watching films. So just add it to game discs.
@Dezzy70 But you have to go up to the console to actually take the disc out. You may as well push the button to eject the disc while you're over there.
@Dezzy70 you can eject discs go over to the game you want to eject press menu button top option is eject
Did know about it on the one, the series version was unknown to me.
I did know, but only because I’m weird and I enjoy watching YouTube fixit videos where they take broken consoles apart to diagnose and fix them.
I had to do this with my Xbox One back in the day when game disc got stuck. In fact I was going to send it to be repaired, when customer service told me this trick.
Because of that I missed Halo 5 beta.
@BulkSlash same those are kind of addicting videos…
I’m well aware. I had my Series X for FOUR days and it died. MK11 was in the drive. The Xbox support person told me there was nothing they could do about it, said the refurbish team would trash my disc, and I could ask for a digital copy. I immediately hung up on her because she clearly had no freaking clue what she was talking about. Quick Google search and found the answer on OFFICIAL XBOX SUPPORT material. Definitely a training opportunity. Also I have a new Series X from MS
@BulkSlash Which ones do you watch? I'm a fan of TronicsFix and
NorthridgeFix. Always looking for possible new channels.
@VenomousAlbino
I know but it’s just a little improvement thing.
Anyway someone here says you can eject form the game disc, so that’s good.
@trev666
Thank you never spotted that, will have a go.
@trev666
Glad Xbox have added this feature.
Along with real full HDMI CEC control.
Finally we getting these things with series x
As Xbox one x lost out on these features.
@logicslayer I watch TronicsFix too! A couple of others I watch are My Mate Vince and TheCod3r.
It’s a bit more niche but I also enjoy Joe’s Classic Video Games, John’s Arcade and lukemorse1 which are all arcade machine and PCB repairs.
I think I've had one disc in my XSX and I got mine at launch. It would have been a BluRay movie, can't remember which one though. 🤷🏻♂️
@Dezzy70 Nope, can't do it: improvement over what?!? You'd have to press fewer buttons if you just pressed the eject button on the console than if you ejected the disc by navigating through menus with the controller, and you have to get up to actually take the disc out either way. Ejecting the disc with the controller is literally and indisputably the more inconvenient option in this situation.
I think I put a Blu-ray in my series x once lol I’m all digital
it takes discs?
@VenomousAlbino
Well I like that option and doing it that way, ejecting through the controller, which is now available on series x.
Options and life improvements are good to have.
If no one in world wanted this feature then why has every blu ray player and now every console got this feature. Think about it.
Eject via remote control even on old cassette VCR players and also cd trays on old players.
It’s always been there so live with it, but you carry on doing it your way.
Since I'm digital only, I don't care ;-P
