Just over two years since the game first made its debut, developer NetherRealm has confirmed that DLC for Mortal Kombat 11 has officially come to an end, as the company shifts focus to working on its next project.
The news was announced in a brief post on Twitter, where the studio acknowledged that support has been provided for over a two-year period, and the time has come to move on. The official Xbox account also replied to the tweet:
Mortal Kombat 11's most notable piece of DLC arrived last year in the form of the Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath expansion, which included an additional story mode, new characters, new stages, the return of stage fatalities and more, and was bundled into Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate Edition on Xbox Series X and S this past November.
It's no surprise to hear that NetherRealm is now ready to move on, and we're intrigued to see what's next. Injustice 3, maybe? Creator Ed Boon even appears to have been hinting (or joking) about a Marvel crossover game recently...

Boon's also brought up the possibility of a Shaolin Monks remake (about time!), so personally I hope it's that... though I would imagine another studio would handle that. NetherRealm (Midway Chicago) didn't work on the original one anyway - it was Paradox, when they were Midway San Diego but before THQ San Diego. So I imagine NetherRealm are in fact probably just working on Injustice 3, and if Shaolin Monks is happening, another studio is doing it in association with NR.
But man I really hope SOMEONE is remaking Shaolin Monks right about now...
I don't know, I almost feels like it is going out with a whimper. When Ultimate hit, if they made this announcement then, sure, fine. But that was over half a year ago, then all just goes quiet until now and this is the announcement.
Looks like Ultimate MK 11 is the most complete edition to buy then.
What DLC isn't included in that release? Just want to make sure I pick up all the relevant bits and bobs if I buy a physical copy
Maybe Phil can get these folks to make us a proper KI2? Please? No? Okay... 😞
