One of Bethesda's upcoming releases is Arkane's Deathloop. During Sony's latest State of Play today, the studio shared an official gameplay walkthrough of the PlayStation 5 build.
Towards the end is where it gets interesting for Xbox fans - with the trailer reminding everyone in fine print that the game will not be available on "other consoles" until at least September next year. That's an entire year.
"*Also available on PC. Not available on other consoles until at least 09/14/22"
The expectation seems to be this first-person Groundhog Day-style shooter will eventually end up on the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Game Pass now that Bethesda is officially part of Microsoft.
Even the Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, was excited for the latest gameplay reveal:
Will you be holding out for a possible Deathloop release on Xbox? Or checking it out this September when it arrives on PC and PlayStation 5? Leave a comment down below.

I’m split on when I will play this.
On the one hand I love Arkane games, one of my absolute favourite studios, and am really excited for Deathloop. It truly looks wonderful and right up my street. Everything from the world building, combat and strategy, island puzzle, aesthetic and soundtrack looks brilliant. If they pull it all off it will likely be a strong GOTY contender.
On the other I have a huge backlog of games and usually play games 6 months to 5+ years later for a huge variety of reasons. (Some of my top GOTYs last year were Witcher 3 & Bloodborne for example, two games from 2015). I rarely play at launch now but do make exceptions.
Additionally it will be included on Game Pass in a year, be more fully patched by then, and most likely will have something to make it ‘play better on Xbox’
I think it will depend on just how good it is and what I’m playing at the time, if it really grabs me. Regardless really looking forward to it in due course!
Expected it to be late this year or very early next year on Xbox.
Guess the deal was done pre purchase.
Will be interesting to see how it sells on the PlayStation platform now after the Bethesda purchase.
@John117
Same here.
And I got too much to play this year anyway, Metroid 5, Tales of Arise, Halo Infinite and SMTV at least.
Really interested in this game but not to the point where i'll pay full price for it when i can get it on gamepass. I can wait for a year. Thankfully there's no shortage of games to keep me up until then. Same thing also applies to Ghostwire Tokyo.
It's funny to think that some people are angry at MS buying Bethesda but had they not, how many Bethesda produced titles would end up on Playstations island of times exclusives? They tried to poach Starfield, even. Xbox gives you more availability to play these games, at a really affordable price. Sony would be charging a price worthy of fine dining at Gordon Ramsays. Deathloop is a stark reminder to what Sony will do to grab attention and wallets as much as possible
@themightyant simple answer in my mind. If you have game pass then wait for that instead of shelling out money to buy it.
That's what I'll be doing anyway! The only games I will ever pay for ever again will be Sony exclusives. The rest will wait for game pass.
I'll also be letting my current game pass subscription run out (about a year), then plan to not pay for game pass for a couple of years before returning once there is a catalogue of new games available, during which I'll get the Sony exclusives on sale.
Got the whole gen mapped out this time!
@StonyKL I understand that view but everyone's in a different position.
While I love a good deal and like to look after the pennies, doing so consistently allows me to spend the pounds when I want to.
For me it's not always about spending the least possible. I'm happy to pay for a good game if I want to play it right now even if it might, or this case will, come to Game Pass in future.
But as I said i'm on the fence, will wait to see reviews and likely wait a few patches anyway. There's no shortage of things to play.
Well ... it is what it is
@Doctorwhoooourgh Although I have no love for timed exclusives, it's definitely better than permanent exclusives so yeah I think the anger is justified.
As I have a series S I can wait for this, but honestly I'd encourage sony players not to Buy or Support this, Microsoft will most likely get a better version with exclusive dlc and future sequel won't be coming to playstation which would be screwing over potentialy millions of playstation players.
Just save yourself £60 and anger in the future
@sqxrz nah, you know if Sony could afford it, no games would end up on Xbox. Also, out of the two companies, the one that tends to lean toward anti-consumer tendencies with a propensity of back peddling, lying, and upgrade pricing habits, is the one I tend to avoid. My original point though, was that while MS were negotiating for Bethesda, Sony already had plans to poach as much as possible. It's lucky for us with an Xbox that that didn't happen.
I can wait another year to play this, at least we will eventually get to play this and future Arkane games unlike those on PlayStation unless they play on Xbox or PC.
@CrazyJF I didn't assume anything. Of course next gen prices will creep up on all platforms but I'm talking about Gamepass. Nothing you said really relates to my point. Weird clutching of the straws there but sure, okay lol
On the fence with this.
I also own a PS5 and this is only £53 digitally.
Not sure to buy on PS5 or just wait it out until it hits Game Pass next year.
Pretty much 50/50 between this and Tales of Arise for my September fix.
@sqxrz @Doctorwhoooourgh I don't want to get into a deep discussion about this because people never see eye to eye about these things. But consider this analogy:
Imagine that you have a favourite car that you've been using during your early 20s. One day you decide to leave it with your dad because you don't need it anymore. After some time, you find out that your dad sold your car to a random guy because he was willing to pay good money for it. Let's say now that random guy is Microsoft and your dad is ZeniMax. Who should you be angry at?
I would personally be angry at my dad for choosing money over me. Simply put, people should be angry at ZeniMax if anything and not Microsoft. People seem to be under the assumption that Microsoft is "stealing" companies, but it is the companies themselves that are willing to sell out. And before anyone says "they didn't have a choice with that much money", you always have a choice. Consider how many companies Microsoft has approached for a buyout that have most likely turned them down. We will never know about them, but the point is that ZeniMax could've turned Microsoft down and continued developing for PlayStation but they didn't.
In terms of the timed exclusivity thing for Deathloop, I have to wonder if ZeniMax were being cheeky and deliberately accepting these timed exclusivity deals with Sony in order to get some extra capital while still knowing that they were going to be acquired by Microsoft. I was watching Podcast Unlocked episode 500 with Phil Spencer and I believe he mentioned that Microsoft and ZeniMax were in talks about a potential acquisition as early as five years ago, i.e. most likely before these timed exclusivity deals were even signed. So you have to wonder if ZeniMax just wanted extra money from Sony before agreeing upon an acquisition by Microsoft, lol.
@LtSarge I agree. My point was really that out of the two companies I prefer Xbox. Simply because Gamepass. Zenimax had enough money and reputation to remain independent, but they chose to be brought. That's a different subject all together in my mind, and had it been the other way round I would be angry, but luckily for me I have a series X and I have a gamepass subscription =)
@MaccaMUFC I gave your comment a like before even reading it. That’s what fellow reds do!
Did I understand the reveal properly; can your game essentially be 'invaded' by another person who then takes control of the female character hunting the main protagonist? Does this mean that it has to be always online, or is it possible to turn this 'invade' feature off and have the female character hunting the protagonist only controlled by the AI? I'm really not keen on the idea of other people coming into my game, and making my life difficult.
@Doctorwhoooourgh At the moment I would agree, but I have a long memory and it wasn't that long ago that MS was doing anti-consumer things too. It's usually pretty cyclical with the underdog having to prove themselves with the pro-consumer moves.
When Sony were behind during the end of the PS3 era they created the PS+ Instant game collection, a growing library of some of their best games included with PS+, (it was actually quite similar to Game Pass at the beginning, i.e. without the newest games included) this changed to become some monthly games without the ever growing library but led to MS following up with Games with Gold and then Game Pass.
TLDR: Competition is good for us the gamer and I hope to see more of it.
@themightyant we all remember the dark days haha, I was all in with PlayStation until last year or so, I always focus on the present, but yeah, if we look back then 100% MS were arguably worse than PS, thankfully things have changed and it would seem MS have their fingers on the pulse of consumer wants right now. PlayStation charging another fee for an upgrade on their games is starting to look like the norm they want to pursue. Which is a shame. If it wasn't for gamepass I worry that kind of norm would be commonplace
“MS have their fingers on the pulse of consumer wants right now” I mostly agree, and yes for me, but there are different types of consumer who have different needs, there’s room for more than one approach.
Re: the upgrade fee. I’m split on this. Obviously we’d all like everything to be free! but I also accept it takes work to do it.
A little perspective: Until this generation you basically had to rebuy every game if you wanted the latest version on new hardware. (There were a few exceptions) If the changes are significant enough to warrant an upgrade and not just play the old version in back compatibility mode (which is an option, you don’t NEED the upgrade) I’m not completely against paying £10 to do so. It’s certainly much better than the £60 we used to have to pay.
TLDR We’re better off than we used to be, it’s just Microsoft have moved the goalposts so far that it now looks stingy by comparison.
@Syndrome if you are a PlayStation Plus member you do get at 10% discount. Personally I am waiting for reviews. If it is game of the year material Ill buy it.. Otherwise Ill was for it to come to GamePass.
@Dezzy70 Outside the circle jerk of internet enthusiasts the general public has absolutely no idea who owns what or what it means. I doubt MS owning Bethesda will have any real measurable impact on the financials on PS. At least not until Bethesda = Xbox games becomes as common as knowing Kratos isn't coming to Xbox.
@themightyant If it were a $10 upgrade fee for an all-new upgraded build of Uncharted 4 that shipped before the PS5 even existed, I could buy that. But they're charging to upgrade a game that launched pretty much simultaneously with the new console being announced, that was being developed in tandem with the new hardware being available. You don't launch a game, announce a new platform, then announce an upgrade of said game, for a price, to the new platform. There's a certain expectation of the support cycle of a product where violating that just looks like nickel and diming customers, regardless of what MS is doing. It's like the people saying "well they just gave us that free multiplayer update" - no they didn't give you anything free, it was sold as an included feature for the money paid up front, they just delivered part of the product late. If you order a dozen dinner plates, and only get 10 now because the last 2 are backordered for a year, you aren't getting 2 free plates next year.
(Edit: Oh you're talking about Kojima. I was thinking GoT, but $10 did seem remarkably low compared to what I'd seen for that grand theft gamer.)
Do we know if it'll be on Game Pass for PC day one or not?
I feel like if this game takes off, it’s going to be a bad time for Sony fans. If it’s successful, PS5 will not see sequels either way. Though it did feel super awkward that what seemed to be the biggest bang at Sony’s State of Play was technically a Xbox product.
@Doctorwhoooourgh No matter how you try to spin it, millions of players are no longer able to play them on their platform of choice, indefinitely. It does not affect you because you're on the right platform but it does to others.
If Sony decided to purchase Rockstar, I cannot blame millions of angry Xbox players who suddenly finds themselves no longer able to play their favourites on Xbox consoles.
Like I said, the anger is justified.
@sqxrz I'm not disputing the fact that it sucks when any acquisition is made, it's crap that players are left out but out of the two giant gaming companies I prefer the pro-consumer model than the pricey one, both were gunning for Exclusivity it just so happens with MS there is more choice and availability. That aside, this is a xbox centric website right? It's clear what you're about, mate. I'm not going to argue with someone who clearly is on here to massage their ego and defend their PlayStation
@NEStalgia yep was talking about Kojima. And the Death Stranding update seems to have enough new content to warrant the £10 IMO . As I said above I’m just glad there IS an upgrade path at all. Hopefully we’re mostly past this not being offered. E.g. Control on both PS5 and XSX was guilty of reselling the whole game.
Yes I think that is reasonable (though of course free is nice, but it clearly took a lot of work to add new content.)
On GoT not so happy about the £9 next gen tax. Though to be clear the multiplayer was never promised. It was a complete unknown and popped up out of the blue. But regardless this doesn’t make it ok to nickel and dime next gen owners with the PS5 upgrade.
So they gave us the release date for the gamepass version of the game!
I can wait
@Doctorwhoooourgh Haha mate, I'm not here to defend Sony. Microsoft deserves credit & my respect for their pro-consumer policies & overall better console/services compared to Sony's. I was just pointing out the disappointment from players left out from the ZeniMax deal is legitimate.
I don't get why people need to pick sides & support/defend your platform of choice no matter what. I love PlayStation but I still can be critical of them for their mistakes & the same for Microsoft even with their pro-consumer policies. That's why I also get called out on PushSquare too.
But as to whom the anger should be directed at, as pointed out by @LtSarge, it's up for debate.
@LtSarge 😄, cash go brrr...
As expected. I may play it on Xbox when the time comes.
It is such a deliberately disingenuous statement by PlayStation to say 'until at least' because no one with any knowledge of the situation would for one instant believe that Microsoft would extend the timed exclusivity. Exclusivity ends on the 14th of September 2022, and then the game will be coming to GamePass Day One, with that day most likely being the day after the exclusivity expires, i.e. September the 15th 2022...
playstation can have it, ill just wait to get it free on gamepass vs paying for it, besides i have a huge backlog of games at the moment so much so that it almost paralyzes me from playing anything as i dont know what to play sometimes.
