With the trademark of the Sunset Overdrive IP by Sony earlier this year, many fans got excited at the possibility of the series' return. While that hasn't been the case (so far), it seems the former Xbox game is making an appearance this year... in the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
Last night the internet went crazy when not only did Insomniac Games tweet out a picture of the game, but the official Fizzie (the mascot in the game) Twitter account made an appearance. In a tweet, Fizzie said: "What the heck. Did anybody hear that?" It was later discovered to be simply a form of cross marketing for Insomniac's latest title.
As it turns out, the reference to Sunset Overdrive was to reveal the RYNO 8 gun in the game, a unique weapon which manages to bring in objects from other PlayStation franchises - including Sunset Overdrive. This will be the first appearance of the game outside of its original release on Xbox One back in 2014, which has caused a bit of a frenzy.
Understandably, fans went nuts at the initial tease of Sunset Overdrive. It's clear there's a fanbase that would love to see the series continue in some fashion, and while it's highly unlikely we'll ever see it on Xbox following Sony's acquisition of Insomniac Games, we can still dream. If anything, it'll be great for other console players to see why we all embrace the game so fondly. If it means skipping Xbox to make it happen, then so be it.

I hope Sony brings Sunset Overdrive back
Even as an odd duckling among a bunch of their IPs it was one of Insomniac's best games and really deserves to be played by more people
I'd be down for a PS5 remaster of some kind or even a sequel
I know Insomniac has their hands somewhat tied between Lombaxes and wall-crawlers right now but it'd be nice to see Sunset being treated with the same admiration and respect as franchises like Horizon, Uncharted and even new ones like Ghost of Tsushima
Not sure if Sony would give a green light to sunset overdrive 2. It would take the team away from Spider-Man, a massive seller IP and a console selling IP.
You could argue ratchet and clank is to close to that sort of game anyway.
Maybe a job for a small team to undertake a slight polishing up of the original and release that just for fun.
@Dezzy70 Considering Spider-Man actually uses an updated version of the Sunset engine they could totally take their work from those games and repurpose them to making new Sunset Overdrive content or remastering the original game with new features and updates
Sunset was a big game in getting them to familiarize themselves with open world traversal mechanics like the ones that would be seen in Spider-Man so I wouldn't be surprised if they take their experience from that and reapply it to Sunset one day since the engine is there
Freakin' Sunset Overdrive is so good! I bought my XBone FOR IT... a couple years later but whatever. It's still the game I wanted an XBone for. It was only $8 too, and that makes me so sad.
It's almost certainly Insomniac's best game; whoever designed Sunset City and whoever coded the traversal abilities need a raise. It is such a fluid, perfect platformer in its movement and it does such a beautiful job of piling on techniques the longer you're playing the game (when you realize you can jump cancel out of the undergrind flip to launch yourself super high in the air, it's mind-blowing)... it's like the best Tony Hawk game ever made. You're constantly, effortlessly on the move, never touching the ground, every freakin' bouncy umbrella and AC unit is perfectly placed, wall runs feel great... it absolutely embarrasses every other game on the market in terms of traversal. Even their Spider-Man game(s) - it's not their fault, they didn't design NYC and NYC was not designed to be a killer game level, but still.
Christ, Sunset Overdrive deserved a MUCH bigger marketing push by Microsoft, and it deserves FAR MORE ATTENTION by Sony now. More people need to play this one. The fact that there isn't an announced remaster for PS4 and/or PS5 is crazy - hopefully E3, but jeez c'mon. Do something with it.
I finished sunset Overdrive yesterday. It was my first ever playthrough. Its such a fun game and easily one of the best exclusive games on xbox. Not sure why Microsoft didn't just buy and keep the IP. It's not like xbox has many exclusives let alone good ones.
@Vinsanity Agreed 100% these are the types of games that Microsoft sorely lacks in their eco system.
