We're not sure why you would, but there's an option to use the original Mako vehicle controls in Mass Effect Legendary Edition. For those who don't remember, they were some of the most awkward and unresponsive controls ever seen for commanding a vehicle. Luckily, the remastered version will introduce a new control scheme, but you can play the way it was originally intended - if you're feeling brave.
As mentioned by environment director Kevin Meek in an interview with PC Gamer, the option to return to the original input has been retained "for those people out there who do like pain". For everyone else, new controls have been added, which as Meek describes, is "like night and day".
"For those people out there who do like pain, we've left the option to leave it back kind of closer to the original controls as well if you want."
"Playing the Mako today versus playing the Mako back in the original, especially on PC, it's like night and day. I don't want to thrash my keyboard and mouse after every encounter with the thresher maw or trying to climb a mountain."
Project director Mac Walters also added that, in regards to the original controls, "some people love it, or some people hate it", but we're yet to find anyone who does "love it". So we're going to pop a little poll below, as we're interested to see if there are any of you out there who do love the original controls (we won't judge - promise!).
Mass Effect Legendary Edition is said to improve on them drastically, then, and is a big selling point for the upcoming remaster. With just one week to go, we'll soon be able to try out those improved vehicle controls for ourselves.
What is your opinion on the Mako controls in Mass Effect? Let us know in the comments below.
I have actually been playing the original 360 version of the first game lately, thought it would be a good time to play that game again as I never did play through the series properly with one save file on the same platform, so I'll give it a go while I wait for the new Legendary Edition to get patched up and go on sale.
I actually forgot about how the Mako controlled, but I quickly got a hang of it. The only thing I don't like is how awkward the tank controls can be with how the camera can effect them, but it's a whole thing where you just gotta get in sync with it. I can seem to control it pretty well now, able to get in and out of cover as I need to in combat and so on. It's kinda like controlling an RC car to be honest.
I think people are exaggerating how bad it was. I mean they literally gave you the Mako to try and navigate mountains on barren planets. I'm not sure how much smoother you can really make that.
I have been driving that Mako for years, and I know it better than back of my hand. There is no mountaintop where I can not drive that beauty.
I have looked for the option in game to switch these controls and have yet to find it.
