If you're eager to get on a cruise but are currently land bound due to global restrictions, then fear no more, as Team 17's pirate RPG King of Seas is setting sail with a demo on Xbox from today.
Ahead of its launch next month on May 25, players will be able to get a taste of the seven seas, as they battle other nefarious pirates in ferocious sea battles. While the game mainly takes place on your trusty ship, you'll be able to find lost islands, treasures, and build up your ship in this procedurally generated world.
"King of Seas is an Action Role playing game set in a deadly procedurally generated pirate world. In a ferocious plot you will fight to regain what has been taken away and embark on an epic adventure in a fantastic world, filled with battles, lost islands and treasures. A universe full of amazing characters and breathtaking missions will keep you anchored as you strive to become the king of all pirates."
If you love the demo, you'll also be able to pre-order the game digitally from today via the Microsoft Store. It retails at £19.99 / $24.99, and will allow you to dive straight into the game as soon as it goes live. While we await an update from Ubisoft on the upcoming ambitious Skull & Bones, this could prove to be an excellent diversion in the meantime.
To access the demo, (we think) you need to head to the King of Seas game page on the Microsoft Store and download the free trial. We're assuming it's a time-limited demo, but no details on this have been provided ahead of time.

Thought it was ok on PC.
I feel like where it lost the most was the fact that the factions are fairly ambiguous (Royals, Merchants, Pirates), so there's no nations fighting, and the map is random, so there's nothing recognizable in the game.
I may be boring, but I feel like a newer pirate game based in the Caribbean (I think the last we had in the Caribbean was Sid Meier's Pirates about 17 years ago) would have been nicer, rather than fighting over randomly generated and named places that mean nothing to me.
The game is entirely story-based from what I can tell, and there's just not a lot of background lore to back that up. Doing a story-based game in a random world never seems to work well.

Yeah, that doesn't sound too exciting. 😪
I will check it out as I am a sucker for Pirate games. As for Skull and Bones I am calling that Vaporware.
I played the demo tonight and really enjoyed it. Your ship is quite easy to control, and battles are fun. My only criticism is when you are near ports/docks other ships can suddenly appear out of nowhere, often leading to a collision through no fault of your own. Otherwise, it’s great fun. Be warned though - the demo is timed, and only gives you 1 hour. After that it will abruptly end.
I will almost definitely play the full game when it comes out. I’m hoping it comes to GP at launch, otherwise I’d happily buy it (and is also £4 off if you preorder before release)
Idk about this one. I agree with what Xeno said. It feels like Pirates! lite but without the charm or historical context. If they went all the way with the fantasy and had Warhammer like factions with Orcs and Skaven or something along those lines or even low fantasy with interesting world building that would be one thing but from what I can tell it's more or less a generic cutsey pirate theme that feels like it's aimed at kids. The writing isn't very good either. It has a bad children's media vibe.
The fact they refer to different shot as different "bullets" in the controls tutorial isn't a great sign either...
