Update (April 2021): Microsoft has now officially unlocked 50+ free-to-play games across various Xbox consoles for all users, meaning you no longer need an Xbox Live Gold membership to play them online.
We've updated the full list of supported titles below!
Original story (January 2021): We're sure you've seen by now that Microsoft has backtracked on its decision to increase the price of Xbox Live Gold, also announcing at the same time that free-to-play games will no longer require Gold in the future.
This means you won't be forced to pay in order to play online games that are classed as "free-to-play" on Xbox, which includes some huge titles such as Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone and Apex Legends.
Below, we've gathered a list of titles that are expected to be removing this restriction in the coming months.
"We’re turning this moment into an opportunity to bring Xbox Live more in line with how we see the player at the center of their experience. For free-to-play games, you will no longer need an Xbox Live Gold membership to play those games on Xbox. We are working hard to deliver this change as soon as possible in the coming months."

About 4 years too late..
@Gaming365247 at least now Xbox is the only console with FREE cloud saves and F2P games unlike Sony and Nintendo. I wish they’d scrap Live Gold altogether tbh but it’s a progress nonetheless.
Rogue Company is awesome!!!
Anyone know if the happy wars servers are still online?
@Prolix
Yes Microsoft Cloud saves are great.
Also if your console is you home console the other family members get cloud saves as well.
Even when you pay with Sony and make your console your primary console the other family members do not get cloud save. Sony being tight fisted and it is annoying.
At least when you pay with Nintendo your family get cloud saves as well in family membership.
Sony are the worst at cloud saves.
@Gaming365247 better late than never.
"too late" implies every Xbox owner without gold will just say "I refuse to play these games because you took too long!"
Truth is, gamers that don't hate multi-player, and have Xbox but not gold, will likely give some of these a shot.
Keep in mind the same people that would enjoy multi-player, have an Xbox, but not gold, are usually the same that cant afford a second console.
If you just want to play F2P games then a Series S is a very good choice for those on a budget now. Hopefully not too little too late.
is there any single player games in that list?
Eventually i believe Gold will be dead and to play non f2p you’ll need game pass
@ultraviolet you dont need gold to play a single player game and there are no free single player games that I’m aware of as that would be giving your work away for free
@Tharsman that’s nowhere near true my brother in law has a xbox but no live, reason isn’t he can’t afford a second system its because the xbox isn’t his main or even his secondary system....he got it for halo and gears single player games...
@Blessed_Koz your right you don't need gold to play single player games, I'm on my forth generation of xbox without paying for a live subscription.
Thank you for the clarification on if there was any single player games on the list
I know that atleast Happy Wars doesn't exist anymore sadly.
@Blessed_Koz I was very specific to people that would enjoy playing games like Halo or Gears multi player modes.
I myself have every console and didn't have gold until I got GPU, but that is simply because I could not care less about multi-player. Only reason I had PSN Plus for years is that Sony holds cloud saves hostage behind the service.
Edit: also, there are a few free single player games on Xbox store. And there are a TON of single player f2p games on mobile. Multi player has little to do with being able to monetize a free 2 play game.
Xbox is the premier place to play FTP games now.
@ultraviolet I know your comment is from a few months ago but there are games on this list that have a single player component or are single player in general. I never played online on Rocket League for example and I believe (but not certain as I haven't played them) at the very least that Crackdown 1+2, Phantom Dust and Too Human are single player games or have a single player component
@ralphdibny thanks for the info!
