Microsoft announced earlier today that the latest batch of five Bethesda games would be treated to FPS Boosts on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, upgrading them from 30 frames per-second to (nearly) 60FPS.
However, two of them are fairly unique in the fact that you have to turn on FPS Boost manually for them on Xbox Series X, otherwise you won't see the frame rate benefits. Why? Because their resolutions have been dropped on the system to make FPS Boost work at the intended 60 frames per-second.
The two games are Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, and Microsoft says because of the drop, it wants to give you the choice whether to activate FPS Boost or not. Here's the full explanation from the Xbox team about this:
In some instances, because there are higher graphics requirements to enable FPS Boost technology, we’ve had to reduce a game’s resolution to ensure it both runs smoothly and plays great. In those select cases, such as Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 in this latest title announcement, FPS Boost is not automatically enabled for Xbox Series X gamers. For all titles receiving this update, gamers will see a clear indicator if a title is running FPS Boost.
"At Xbox, we’re all about giving you the choice in how you want to play your favorite games, whether in its original form or with FPS Boost and/or Auto HDR. As we also detailed a few weeks back and included as part of our March Platform Update, you can now go into the 'Manage Game' section for any enhanced title, where you’ll see the new 'Compatibility Options' button that will allow you to toggle FPS Boost and Auto HDR “on” or 'off.'"
We haven't had a chance to test FPS Boost for Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 at the time of writing, but as you can see above, Microsoft says players "will see a clear indicator" about this, so hopefully there won't be any confusion.
We're not sure what the resolutions have been dropped to either, but regardless, we're definitely excited to check out Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 at a glorious 60 frames per-second. Hopefully it's a transformative experience.

Can’t even get Fallout 76 to work at the moment, so will look forward to doing so when that happens….
Well considering the Fallout games are not that much fun... this will not affect me at all. But i will still never understand why companies can't manage to make a game that is 4K at 60FPS on the series X. I thought that was the point of the new system?
@OliverOwen because there aren’t any games right now made for series X. All these games are running on old code through backwards compatibility.
It’s like playing tape cassettes from the 90s through a modern Dolby Atmos system and saying “why isn’t this surround? I thought Atmos was suppose to be amazing”.
Give them them to make games for the series X and you’ll see. 👍
@Scenes Understood
@Medic_Alert I get that, i just cant wait for the next generation of games to release that can take advantage of the new Series X system capabilities.
I'm not convinced many games will run 4k60 even native. The GPU architecture these machines are built on are barely capable of that at best on PC, with the new GPUs that launced for PS at the same time the consoles launched are the first ones more readily capable of it. I think resolution tradeoff for fps will be the norm for the generation, though less severely and with more dynamic resolution than "1440 fixed" than we've been seeing so far. Same for PS5. 4k, 60fps, HDR is a heck of a lot of data...
I've tested Fallout 4 and I don't know if it's a bug or intentional but with FPS Boost enabled the resolution is dropped to 1080p but the textures have been dropped from the One X enhanced version.
It's literally like playing the Xbox One S version but at 60FPS.
Ive had to turn it off and better to just use the 60FPS mod instead.
I've not tested Fallout 76 so don't know about that one in terms of resolution.
Fallout 4 not working for me, since the boost, gets to the menu screen and crashes back to the dash, i have tried so many options and still wont work on my series x. any ideas guys ?
