Update: Jeff Grubb was right! Microsoft has now confirmed that an Age of Empires "Fan Preview" event will take place next month on Saturday, April 10th at 9am PT/ 12pm ET/ 5pm BST, and it will feature "surprises, reveals: new gameplay civilizations and campaigns, and so much more," including for Age of Empires 4!

You can check out the brand-new trailer for the event above.

Original story: Microsoft’s momentum is seemingly never ending right now, and there’s no signs of slowing down. According to industry insider Jeff Grubb, an event dedicated to Age of Empires is planned for April 10.

As part of Grubb’s Summer Game Mess show, which looks at all the rumoured and planned upcoming events, Microsoft will be delivering an Age of Empires event that fans should “get excited” about.

Let’s talk about April 10th. This is probably the one Microsoft thing that’s going to happen between now and E3. They will be talking about Age of Empires in some way on that day, so look out for that. That game is probably a sequel, we know Age of Empires 4 is coming. Chances are if they’re going to have a solo event that they’ll probably be talking about that. If you’re an Age of Empires fan, I would get excited. I’d say, hey, let’s check in on that. They should be announcing that pretty soon. I’m putting it on the list, I’m pretty confident about it.”

While the event is not confirmed, Grubb has a pretty clean track record of predicting events. He’s called recent streams such as the Microsoft and Bethesda roundtable, so we think this is a pretty safe bet on being true. It’s unclear what the event will contain, but as Grubb predicts, it will most likely look at the future of the series - perhaps Age of Empires 4.

Back at the start of the year, developer Relic Entertainment confirmed it was making "great progress" on the next Age of Empires game, with the team now playing it every single day, so let's hope a release date is on the cards.
