The Xbox Series X is set to feature enhanced audio in the next console generation, and Microsoft's Project Acoustics will be a part of that. The video below dates back to a year ago, but gives us a great insight into how the wave-based acoustic system can boost immersion in Xbox games.
It includes a Gears 5 example, in which you can listen to how Project Acoustics uses Triton technology for "accurate sound propagation using wave physics." Skip to the 20-second mark to hear it:
The Project Acoustics runtime plugins are already available for Xbox One developers, but as mentioned above, the technology is also coming to Xbox Series X. The following statement from Xbox Wire explains exactly how Project Acoustics will enhance audio on the upcoming system:
Incubated over a decade by Microsoft Research, Project Acoustics accurately models sound propagation physics in mixed reality and games, employed by many AAA experiences today. It is unique in simulating wave effects like diffraction in complex scene geometries without straining CPU, enabling a much more immersive and lifelike auditory experience. Plug-in support for both the Unity and Unreal game engines empower the sound designer with expressive controls to mold reality. Developers will be able to easily leverage Project Acoustics with Xbox Series X through the addition of a new custom audio hardware block.

It will be interesting to see how Audio evolves and compares to current (Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos) and future competing PS5's 3D audio. Its funny because I see a LOT of Sony Fanboys saying the PS5's Audio is superior - and that it has a dedicated Audio chip - although the XB1 has offered 3D audio and a dedicated Audio chip built in to the APU. I also see then talking up 'Haptic' feedback on the triggers - despite the XB1 offering rumble triggers already. Not to say that PS5's could be 'next gen' rumble triggers and the audio too could be superior but until we can actually compare and contrast, we will have to see if its better or not or even if we can actually tell the difference between either.
I will get the chance when I get both systems to determine that myself of course - although its only fair to compare audio etc in the same game(s) as different devs may not take the same approach...
Awesome that MS and Sony are focusing on sound immersion. I could hear a difference with just my mono speaker phone.

Woefully underrated, audio fidelity is in games. Awesome stuff, indeed.
