We're not in the business of throwing too much shade here at Pure Xbox, but let's be honest -- yesterday's PS5 deep dive wasn't particularly exciting for the average consumer. What some perceived to be a large-scale feature reveal ended up being a dry technical discussion, and some PS5 fans weren't happy.
You can find disgruntlement all over the web. Popular YouTuber Kevin Kenson, for example, posted a video called "The PS5 Reveal Was A Mistake", noting the presentation was "far too in depth". Users over at the PS5 Reddit also suggested Microsoft was "better prepared for this round of reveal":
Even our friends at Push Square noted how "shockingly misjudged" the deep dive was, while various users took to Twitter not only to criticise the delivery of the presentation, but the confusing message behind PS5's backwards compatibility features (FYI: Sony has confirmed they will "continue the testing process and expand backwards compatibility coverage over time.”)

All of this follows a fantastic start for Xbox Series X earlier this week, with Microsoft revealing heaps of information about everything from tech specs to Quick Resume and Smart Delivery. As of yesterday, it's also been revealed the Xbox Series X is the more powerful system of the two. Check out our comparison of tech specs here.
Did you watch the PS5 deep dive yesterday? Which console are you most interested in right now? Tell us below.

It wasn't a good stream. I turned it off because, although he went off into tech town and I didn't understand what he was talking about, it came across as incredibly dull. And those people at the front weren't even real, so it made the whole thing just feel worse.
The problem is, Microsoft has been drip feeling little bits since they announced the console last year, and Sony has been radio silent. I get this was supposed to be for gdc, but they should have realised fans would tune into this and wanted to hear the kinda stuff Microsoft was talking about. Instead we got what reminded me of a very boring maths class at school. And it's less powerful than Xbox so there was no sort of drop the mic moment.
The Ps4 reveal was hyped, and it was a good watch. This was boring, and a missed opportunity. Although they were consistent with the Ps4 showcase in that we still don't know what the thing looks like.
Sony should have found a way to deliver this exclusively to the intended audience - basically developers and technology journalists -and let the press do the "unveiling".
It was an interesting tech dive, but even I tuned out after a while. I get that Sony really can't demo 3D audio, but some kind of demo would have been nice. Or...you know...a picture of the retail model. A screenshot of the UI...something that matters to non-developers/tech journalists to build hype - especially knowing this will be on YouTube for all to watch.
I get it, the stream was EXACTLY as described. But PR could have done something to spruce it up for the masses.
Sony’s PS5 “reveal” was awful. They didn’t even show off what the console looks like! And how can they not seem to get full backwards compatibility right?
And the presentation of the whole thing will be a meme for years to come. This should have been a GDC show since it was all about tech that most viewers (including myself) won’t understand most of it.
But neither Microsoft or Sony revealing prices or showing any gameplay was a bit disappointing. Microsoft definitely has to be happy after Sony dropped the ball on this one.
@KelticDevil "This should have been a GDC show since it was all about tech"
but it WAS a GDC show, they even said before hand that's what it was but after GDC was cancelled they did this instead, it wasn't a show for the general audience but for developers
did they mess up, yeah they did but people went in expecting a full blown E3 style reveal and that's never what it was going to be, it was always going to be a tech presentation
but i agree they really need to clarify some of the stuff they said for the general audience because it's confused a lot of people and all the conflicting reports about things will; not be helpful
I can't properly describe how horrendous that 'deep dive' was but this was what I commented on PushSquare last night:
'I'd have had more fun watching a loading screen for 1 hour followed by a two hour session of watching paint dry.'
I actually like learning about the technical aspects of these consoles but not only was the presentation boring as heck, none of the information was good. Less powerful, less memory, absolute joke in regards to backwards compatibility. All this from a company that has instituted an idiotic censorship policy a couple years ago clearly aimed at (though not limited to) Japanese devs. I've been a PlayStation guy but from 2005-2008 I did most of my gaming on Xbox 360, I got no problem going back there again. And the thing is, it's not even for exclusives. The Series X, if I'm reading things right, can effectively replace my Xbox One, so I can put it in storage, hand it down to a family member or sell it but I can still keep and play all my games on the new machine. And given the sizable power gap, even if I'm not interested in any exclusive IPs beyond Forza Motorsport and Horizon and Gears of War, I'll still get more use out of Series X because that's where the best console versions of my favorite franchises like Resident Evil and Yakuza will end up. The only purpose of PS5 now is for the first party exclusives (many of which are likely to hit PC anyway and MLB The Show will even be on Xbox) and Sony usually takes 2 or 3 years to really get rolling in that regard.
The ball wasn't fumbled here. Sony's QB dropped back, looked in the opposite direction of his open receivers and threw the ball right to the hands of a guy wearing a black and green jersey.
The poll result, LMAO!
@gingataisen I'd say the Series X just edges it
@KelticDevil Well, it was a GDC show, but since it was cancelled, they decided to do the presentation anyway.
That's why I wouldn't say this was THE reveal. We haven't seen the console itself, no controller, no games yet. The actual reveal is still coming.
@FraserG
By a ray-traced hair. 😂
@FullbringIchigo
I just wanted to stress that the “presentation” was NOT how you do a “reveal”, “deep dive”, or any other way of doing it based on the audience that was going to be watching.
If it was for GDC, fine. But GDC got canceled. Why throw up M. Cerny (who is WAY smarter that any of us, I get it) & let him just talk tech with a fake audience, plus you show nothing? And M. Cerny is not known for his.....personality. Lol. Just a bad look, in my opinion.
@Gamer83
Exactly. Couldn’t have said it better myself.
@KelticDevil oh it was a mess to be sure no denying that but i still think people were expecting to much from it
@Octane
I won’t go on & on about this, but why not just show the console, the controller, etc. off at this point? What are they waiting for?
So the PS5 is less powerful than the Series X. Ok. But so what? It just seems like Sony is being very timid & almost trying to hide stuff right now & I love this new, aggressive Microsoft behind Phil’s leadership. This is the first console he has launched (the Xbox One was D. Mattrick’s baby. And screw Mattrick).
I think Sony, as the market leader, is being very complacent & letting Microsoft get a mindshare & foothold out there & it’s strange why they would let it happen.
@KelticDevil The consoles won't be out for another 8 months. So they still have plenty of time. Nintendo revealed the Switch like 3 months before release and it worked.
@Octane
I do agree the consoles may be delayed at this point. But who knows? And what does it hurt to show PlayStation fans what the PS5 looks like, or the controller, or even some of the UI. Anything?
Whether they come out this holiday or not, what is Sony hiding?
This is the same company that showed off games so many years ahead of time at E3 that they ran out of games to show, eventually, & just bailed on the last two E3s.
Everything about the Sony presentation was just a bit weird. The setting, with the fake audience, Cerny's hair, Cerny's delivery (though to be fair, he did a decent job of maintaining the flow and I watched the whole thing without drifting off), the amount of time talking about SSDs, the number of acronyms.
@KelticDevil
Honestly, all I needed to know is if the backwards compatibility was good. I was even willing to give a pass on no PS3 bc as long as we got a good amount of PS1 and 2 games all PS4 games but incompetent (or maybe for other nefarious reasons such as curation that ties into the pathetic censorship policy) Sony couldn't even get that last one right. It is truly unreal that people are defending Sony right now. I bet if Sony tried to put in all the ridiculous policies MS tried to initially enact on Xbox One, that these people would still eat up whatever crap Sony puts on the plate in front of them.
@Gamer83
I totally agree. And I was even more lenient than you. I expected PS3 backward compatibility problems because of the awful cell processor (people forget about that thing), but to not guarantee at least PS4 BC? C’mon man.
I just don’t get it. But it just kinda shows..... and it’s been going on for generations of video games.... the previous winner (whether it be Nintendo, Sony, or Xbox) does something stupid the next generation to almost ruin how they won the previous one.
I won’t go so far to say that Sony has done that, at this point, but do we all remember the “get a 2nd job” quote? Just sayin’. Lol.
@gcunit
I agree. I can’t blame Cerny. He actually did what he was good at. He’s a huge tech nerd type & is a genius at that stuff. And that is great to have for Sony. Bc he Is not the type to have up there when you want people to get hyped about a console.
The problem was that you broadcast that on YouTube to us fans who don’t know (or care) about a lot of it & it just comes off as cold & boring.
Sony has made their $ on big, exclusive, awesome games right? We saw none of that in the “deep dive”. In fact, since it was a tech type show, they made themselves look worse because there are clearly behind in tech to the Series X. So what was the point?
If they would have shown some gameplay of their games (not that Microsoft has either) or shown some of the benefits of the PS5 over Series X, I could understand. But nope.
@Octane
The only thing I'd say to that is Nintendo also operates outside the bubble Sony and MS compete in and for whatever reason the vast majority of gamers, myself included, hold the company to a different set of standards in regard to tech, online, features, etc.
@Gamer83 Kinda true. But the release is still comparable I think. There are plenty of ''non Nintendo fans'' who've bought a Switch currently, it's pretty main stream I'd say. So I think a shorter release window is preferable. Ideally they'd reveal everything sometime in summer. I personally like the ''here's what you get to play in a few months from now'' approach. Though I don't mind if they have one or two games announced in advance, so that there's always something to look forward to.
They used that guys tweet but ironically didn’t include his follow up comments
