Update: With Ghostwire: Tokyo now available on PlayStation, we thought we'd bump this article so you can get an idea of when to expect it on Xbox Game Pass. In a nutshell, it looks like we'll be waiting about a year until it arrives.
Original story: When is Ghostwire: Tokyo coming to Xbox? Although the game has an exclusivity period on PS5, it's still heading to Xbox in the future. While we don't know an official Xbox release date yet, we can figure out a rough release window thanks to evidence from Sony's recent State of Play event.
In that event, it was revealed that Ghostwire: Tokyo would hit PS5 on March 25th, 2022. At the end of the gameplay deep dive, Sony included a bit of info on other versions of the game. Basically, Ghostwire Tokyo is exclusive to PS5 for a full year, meaning it can release on Xbox anytime from March 25th, 2023.
As Microsoft now owns Bethesda, and the game's developer Tango Gameworks, it's safe to assume Microsoft will want Ghostwire Tokyo to release on Xbox as soon as possible. In that case, we'd expect it to launch on Xbox in March 2023.
Also, let's not forget, the Xbox version will effectively be a first party release, meaning it'll hit Xbox Game Pass on day one. So, while we have to wait a good year for the PS5 exclusivity deal to run down, Ghostwire Tokyo on Xbox should launch straight into the Game Pass library!
Will you be waiting to play Ghostwire Tokyo on Xbox? Let us know below.

Much like Deathloop GP will get the best version of GW, every kink should be ironed out by then
In another life this would have been a common wait for Bethesda titles and nobody would have cared. Such a shame things happened the way they did.
The art style for this game looks incredible. Playstation sure knows how to pick its Exclusives. Sifu, Ghostwire, Kena. All amazing looking Games.
Not coincidentally, I hope we hear of Deathloop coming to Xbox this September because it's apparently very good and I don't have (or plan on getting) a PS5.
Both this and Deathloop are games I’d never buy, but will definitely give a chance on Gamepass. Just have to patiently wait a while.
@Medic_Alert couldn't agree more, I mean it's an okay game, and for the budget they have done a great job, some of the effects are fantastic and the story is ok. It just felt a little lacking. But for the price it was acceptable, I think I paid £22, which is more than reasonable for what you get.
This flip flopping exclusive stuff makes me not want to buy any games that aren't exclusive. Already got The Outer Worlds on PS5 but later its bought and now my save data is useless for a sequel and I'm not willing to buy and put the time in again.
@Medic_Alert It's very short too. Like they took an animated movie and made a game out of it.
My thought process, regardless of my Game Pass subscription, is that if it’s really good, I’ll likely still buy Ghostwire Tokyo on PS5. We shall see I guess.
@Medic_Alert yeah I agree, I only played it as I had nothing else.. haha
I'll buy for PS5, I'm not waiting a year for a version without haptics, and I'd rather buy it than borrow it from a library - though as a 1st party title I'd hope it would always be on Games pass. That's the problem though - its out of my control.
Still, if you don't have much funds, you cant get better than 'almost free' so maybe a years wait seems worth to you...
These "obligatory" Bethesda timed exclusives seem pretty lackluster to me. Not saying I won't eventually get to them, but I see nothing that is hurrying me up.
@Titntin I mean, I get being so excited you need to play day one, no matter how expensive and no matter what platform.. for me, that's TES and Dragon Quest. But this? Ghostwire is the game you are going to get up on your pedestal and talk about how you absolutely can't wait to play with haptics (Which Xbox has, btw) whle talking down to the poors who apparently are just forced to suffer? lol
@isturbo1984 "But this? Ghostwire is the game you are going to get up on your pedestal and talk about how you absolutely can't wait to play with haptics (Which Xbox has, btw) whle talking down to the poors who apparently are just forced to suffer".
😂
In between, my choice for day one last year was Maiden of Black Water also to support the IP and this year will be Sonic Origins because it took forever to get Sonic The Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles remastered. Dragon Quest is a solid choice! I love it but haven't played them all yet.
@Banjo- Yeah, I'm a pathetic DQ fanboy. It's my favorite video game ip. If DQ12 is Stadia exclusive, I'm there day one, lol.
@isturbo1984 I hope it's released on Xbox LOL. And the older games, too!
Will be nice to finally get the last of these Bethesda timed exclusives out into the wild so they can fully focus on the Xbox/PC stuff going forward.
Speaking of Tango Games, I do hope they have The Evil Within 3 in development. The director of the 2nd game, John Johanas, apparently has a project in the works, so hopefully it's that!
@isturbo1984 why the derision, and what pedastol? Is leaving a comment stating I'm excited to play this game so offensive to you that you have to find a way to derride the comment?
Im perfecly aware of the series x capabilities seeing as how I play on one, but you seem unaware of other platforms capabilities if you belive there is parity in this feature, there absolutely is not and it often determines where I buy 3rd parties. The controller and 3d audio often privide a benefit to playing elsewhere for my tastes.
Whilst i'll concede my last sentance was inelgantly phrased, I had no intent to 'talk down'. I too have game pass ultimate as it represnts such fantatic value id be daft to pass it by. What I failed to describe adequately was that I'm excited enough by what ive seen to want to jump in now anyway, despite it being free for me in the future, and I appreciate Im lucky in having that option. I know we will all have different tastes, but I too would be very excited by another dragon quest....bring that day on.
Sorry the game doesnt appeal to you, but sharring my own enthusiam was not intended to offend.
Yeah this game looks amazing and I won't be waiting a whole year just to play it on Game Pass. I loved The Evil Within 1 & 2, so Tango Gameworks has my money. Day 1 purchase for PS5! Give me The Evil Within 3 next!
@Titntin if you rather buy it then "borrow" it as you say that option will be available on XBOX as well. It's nice to have choice isn't it.
@The_Pixel_King with the games due out over next few weeks i won’t have time to play it. Sifu, Horizon, Elden Ring, Gran Turismo 7 an Lego Star Wars Skywalker Saga is my current pre order list. I’ll wait for this on Game Pass.
@Quaali absolutely right. Im not sure anything in that partucular post was well put, and the choice is indeed there and welcome.
I think this title shows another great team of creative developers who come as part of the bethusda package and will be creating great games pass titles in the future, shame theres an exclusivity deal for now.
@Titntin Okay. Fair enough. I was just a little surprised was all. I was a little in disbelief, but you suspended said disbelief. Just the way you worded it, as you said, wasn't particularly "well put." Like being excited for haptic feedback, ignoring that Xbox controllers have it, then changing the subject to a more generalized "capabilities," pretending I am unaware of the PS5's said capabilities. You can have your tastes, but to continue lie, project and sidestep the convo is not something I'm going to dismiss. But I was pretty much just curious if you were genuine about being excited for this game. You don't need to defend your reasoning. I get it. I also agree with the Xbox Inclusive Welcoming Committee, it's nice to have the choice.
@sjbsixpack I haven’t got them preordered, but I’m definitely getting Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7, Lego Star Wars and Sifu. So long as Elden Ring reviews well, I’ll also pick that up, and depending on pricing, the PS5 re-release of GTA5 as well.
It’s an expensive next few months, that’s for sure, so Ghostwire Tokyo may well have to wait for Game Pass after all!
Flying cam game in 2022... oh man
@isturbo1984 Why is it weird that someone would want to experience this game with the superior haptics in the DualSense controller?
Yeah, looking forward to this for sure on gamepass.
As for haptics, I have the same opinion on it that I have for any rumble feature in games. A dumb gimmick to be turned off so it doesn’t mess with my shoulder.
I Want a physical version. As a Physical game collector, it kinda worries me that xbox have less and less disc versions of their games recently. hope this one does.
If you are a Xbox Insider... Go to the Insider HUB this weekend.
The Evil Dead is having an open Beta for all Xbox Insiders! As of now everyone who tries is getting in.
As an Xbox owner and fan I am more than used to waiting for a Time exclusivity to end for PlayStation games to come to Xbox
FWIW, I couldn't wait and bought this for my PS5. I'm 5+ hours into it and I think I've finally found a game worth owning a PS5 for - at least until March 2023 anyway. Much is made about how it's too "FarCry-like" but I really don't get it. Most every open world game has a big map with way too many icons on it - look no further than Forza Horizon 5 for an Xbox example. That said, it's got an amazing setting to it and looks fantastic (playing in 30fps mode w/ray-tracing as the game doesn't benefit enough from 60(ish) FPS.
I can't wait for my Xbox friends to get a hold of it. It'll be worth the wait.
I'm glad I tried it from my buddy, B/c the game was...meh
@Titntin
"The controller and 3d audio often privide a benefit to playing elsewhere for my tastes."
While true the DualSense has features not available to XsX controllers, the 3d audio is very much not a PS5 exclusive feature. The XsX has 3d audio and hardware support for HRTF. Is just that Sony and the gaming media made look like an extraordinary feature only available on PS5.
@Sol4ris Yes, im aware that my series x can deliver 3d audio, I didnt mean to imply it cant. I can great sounds from my xbox.
The alternative tempest engine is however, a little better to these ears, and that maybe due to many more sound sources allowed in its spec. Either way, its something that seems more noticable to me on ps5 exclusives vs the series x games im playing. Maybe its a little more noticable for everyone, and thats why the gaming press quote it as a feature? Its hardly extraordinary, but it can be be very apparent - Returnal has some stuff going on ive not heard before.
@Titntin
"Maybe its a little more noticable for everyone, and thats why the gaming press quote it as a feature? "
Perhaps you are right, but I'm pretty convinced that the reason the gaming media is making such a great deal of it, its because Sony marketed the feature to high heaven - since their solution (Tempest) is proprietary.
Anyhow, I'm sounding off now 😉
By the time it hits GP it will be a fiver in CEX on PS5
@Sol4ris
No prob - sounding off is what this place is here for!
@Titntin xbox has 3d audio in 3 different formats, Windows Sonic, DTS X and Atmos(last two require a license purchase) and personally found the headsets for the xbox to be a better experience then the ps5..... also a point of note why would one buy a game today that came out last march and knowing that in 6 months you can play it for free.....its not like its online game like destiny, its a single player experience play it beat it done with it....not to mention a mediocre game.... Ghostwire wasnt a bad game but its by no means a must own....its not a skyrim or any other game that epic and worth a replay....hell its overall critic response was like a7 outa 10... not that, that determines if a game is good or not but my time with it was ok and fun till it wasnt....game kinda ran out of steam forr me and i never finished it.
@Blessed_Koz 8 months late to this comment section mate - why bring this up now?
I'm well aware of the capabilities on my series X, but in terms of the tempest engine they are outmatched as it allows for many more point sources than any other rival format. That often doesn't matter or show at all, but its noticeable in some games and together with the haptics, and my preferred button layout, its why, given the choice, I'd always reach for a PS5 controller. Or are players not allowed to have preferences?
I bought the game in March because I wanted to play then, on a controller I far prefer. What's the issue? Using your logic no one would ever buy a game at launch because they are always cheaper 6 months later...so what? I have continued to buy games on a platform I prefer, despite some of the titles I've bought being on GP or coming to GP later.
For me, GP is to play the games I cant play elsewhere or wouldn't spend money on. If I buy a game its on switch or PS5, apart from GP, I've only ever spent on Forza DLC.
Your assessment of the game is utterly irrelevant to this conversation. I bought it on release and discovered its a 7 or 8 out of 10 to me. I was happy to buy it, and happy to play it where and when I wanted, irrespective of a particular consoles fans wishing to invalidate perfectly reasonable preferences.
Your concern for my wallet is as touching as it is misplaced.
