Looking for games that are completely 100% free to claim, download and play on Xbox? We're not talking about free-to-play titles like Halo Infinite, Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone — aka, games that are designed to be free while implementing microtransactional elements — instead, the following full Xbox games and tech demos are focused around being entirely (or almost entirely) free with no catches whatsoever.
Back in 2020, we used this list to highlight the many great Xbox 360 games you can claim for free on Xbox One, Series X and Series S, and we've since updated it to include a few more modern titles as well. Hopefully you find it useful!
We've also included the Xbox Games With Gold for October 2022 below, in case you haven't grabbed them yet!
Let's take a look at the list:
A King's Tale: Final Fantasy XV
Set in a fictitious 30 years before FINAL FANTASY XV, this game features retro-style inspired graphics centered around a fast-paced combat system with influences from modern gaming.
Aegis Wing
Ready to save the universe from an Araxian invasion? Challenge them solo or recruit up to three friends for an all-out assault. Feeling lucky? Try it on Insane mode – the rewards are greater but the name is all too accurate.
Bomber Crew Deluxe Edition (Requires XBL Gold)
Take to the skies in this immersive flight simulation where each mission is a high-risk expedition. Manage everything from fuel, ammo, hydraulics and more in your very own physics based Bomber, which can be customized with an array of liveries and paint jobs!
Crackdown (+ All The DLC)
Crackdown pushes the action-driving hybrid genre into the next generation with the first ever truly 3-D playground. Gamers will enforce justice by any means necessary in Pacific City, a crime-ridden urban center built to encourage the exploration of the full width, depth and height of the city."
Crackdown 2 (+ All The DLC)
The sequel to the award-winning vertical-world adventure, Crackdown 2 is the ultimate open-ended world action experience. The game lets you be judge, jury, and executioner for a huge, fully explorable city.
Doritos Crash Course
Doritos Crash Course is a fast-paced, funny, obstacle course game show for your Avatar to compete against your friends and family over Xbox Live.
Harms Way

Hexic HD
Create clusters of same-colored tiles to clear them from the board. Sounds simple, right? The real fun of Hexic is in creating special patterns to earn special pieces.
Inops
Explore the shadowy Mine, twisty Jungle and extra-terrestrial Elect-City but be careful of lurking dangers. Escape traps, solve puzzles and dodge enemies using the Inops ability to split into many little creatures or join into one big Inop whenever you wish.
Insects: An Xbox One X Enhanced Experience
Insects is a real-time, interactive demo designed to showcase the best of 4K Ultra HD, High Dynamic Range, Spatial Audio, and the enhanced visuals of Xbox One X. Originally created for game developers, Insects was reinvented to be an educational and engaging demonstration of the console's real-time graphics rendering capabilities.
Island Saver

Thanks, I had no idea about Harms Way.
Thanks to @ThanosREXXX for bringing this topic up in the forums the other day! Definitely worth highlighting these again.
@FraserG Island Saver is another free game. It's made with kids in mind helping them with learning money and such but it I find it a great pallette cleanser and just a great game to relax too. Plus it's a game going can play with the kids.
@Tasuki Yeah, we highlighted that one the other day, definitely a good one!
I just focused on Xbox 360 games with this post, but I'll put together a more exhaustive guide for Xbox One in the future.
@FraserG Whoops my bad I missed the 360 part lol. Since I just use my Xbox One, I forget that some of the games are 360 games.
It’s very interesting to see Too Human back on the Xbox store.
So many free, great games!!! Thank you for this!
Thanks for sharing this!
Really good to know there's something for free.
Unfortunately Harms Way and Hexic are not available in my country. Neither for free nor for sale
Never played Too Human but it's worth trying for free.
I managed to all these free before but it’s great for people who are yet to play them. It’s worth mentioning that both Crackdown 1 and 2 are both X Enhanced and look fantastic considering how old they are.
@FraserG Thanks for mentioning. Much appreciated.
Brilliant stuff, I'm just downloading the other 3 not mentioned by @ThanosReXXX in the forums. I wonder why these games are free anyway? Hopefully more become free in future and hopefully more of them will be full fat games rather than the 360 arcade style offerings, not that I'm complaining I love me a bit of free
Thanks for this. Turns out the only one I didn't have was Hexic as it came pre installed on my 360 all those years ago. The DLC is also free for Crackdown 1 & 2 as well which I didn't have. 😁
Thanks for the tip, I just added them all!!!
Thanks, free games are always welcome.
@FraserG
@ThanosReXXX is a gift to the NL, PS and PX communities, period.
@AlexSora89 Grazie mille, good sir.
@ThanosReXXX
You're welcome, amico.
Thanks, I didn't have Hexic HD, will be downloading that....
I'd love to download them, if only my Xbox 360's purchasing system wasn't busted for my account. On X1, between "continue" and "back" only the latter works, and via browser the loading ring during the purchase keeps looping infinitely.
@AlexSora89 You could try the Xbox app for Android and then go to the store by using that. Or simply use your phone's browser to go to the relevant page(s).
@ThanosReXXX
Mobile is the only thing I've never tried at this point. Browser is something I've given a whirl, but my guess is that it simply loops.
@AlexSora89 I've had that same problem on the PC with the browser, but not when I use the normal web browser on my smart phone. And the Xbox app is definitely something you should try as well.
Bumping this for anyone who missed it the first time around! All of these work on Xbox Series X and Series S as well
Lol crackdown, had a lot of fun with that game
Phantom Dust is free too isn't it?
@Nic-Noc20th-C Not quite the same: Phantom Dust is a free to play title, not a completely free, fully "everything available without extra cost" title.
It's been a while since we've updated this one! It's no longer just Xbox 360 games — added some more recent titles as well. 👍
Oh that's pretty sweet, I forgot about Too Human entirely. The MaTriX demo is stunning as well.
sadly these games will prolly take a backseat to other games that are on gamepass
I'm not sure if I want to give my series X an std by downloading Too Human. Hexic HD though haha takes me back. Came pre-installed on every xbox 360
@Phantasystar77 It’s free, I just grabbed it. But someone else mentioned it’s a free to play title so I’m not really sure if it counts.
Inops never heard in Europe. OK with a US link.
Is The Witcher 2 no longer free? That was free on 360 and also XBone for a really long time.
I know Crackdown 2 is sorta maligned when compared to the first entry but I've thought it fun. All three games feel like a time capsule to the mid 2000s.
@Shigurui That hasn't been free for as long as I can remember. I bought it at least a year or two ago.
As for the choices, I doubt I'll actually ever play any of these since there's so much else to play and only so much time, but I still claimed Crackdown 1 & 2 along with Too Human.
If you don't have Hexic downloaded them what are you doing?
PSA: New GamePass games added today.
The Pedestrian
Olija
Gorogoa
@KilloWertz It was free on 360 for ages, that's how I got it as it's not really a game I'd buy. It also went free for a while on XBO when it got added to the BC list.
https://www.theverge.com/2016/1/21/10806352/the-witcher-2-free-xbox-one
@Shigurui Well, I guess technically I'm not entirely wrong since I said for as long as I can remember and I never knew it was free when it first went up on the BC list.
It has been a while though as I did buy it a little over 2 years ago, as I finally looked it up. In the end, not a big deal really. It was free and it's not anymore.
@KilloWertz Heh, wasn't trying to prove you wrong mate. I was just trying to convince myself I hadn't gone crazy and imagined it.
@Shigurui It's all good. The drugs aren't catching up to you yet.
And what about:
Port Royal 3
MX Unleashed
?
Added a few more to the list along with March's Games with Gold!
Any of these titles that anyone really recommends at all? I didn’t have an Xbox 360 so some of these passed me by at the time!
Any that I should definitely play/avoid?
Cheers!
As a big fan of ye old Silicon Knights I am excited to try out Too Human (despite the controversy that surrounded the game ages ago upon it's launch).
Also looking forward to playing around with:
A King's Tale: FF15
Insects
Port Royale
Matrix Awakens
Added a few games and removed some others! Everything is up to date now as of July 2022.
A King's Tale: Final Fantasy XV has an awesome 10/10 soundtrack and it's a nice brief addition to the main game that I also loved.
@FraserG Been mentioned multiple times in the comments but Phantom Dust isn't listed and is indeed free.
@Shigurui Added, thank you!
Phantom dust and torchlight seems interesting, thanks for the info
Edit: I only have gamepass ultimate so no torchlight for me lol.
I saw this article earlier in the year and was able to add quite a few to my account. But Aegis Wing wouldn't work and still doesn't now. It either returns an error or give the message that I need to have a gamertag to download it.
Obvs I have a tag but I don't know what's going on. Anyone shine a light?
As a new Xbox owner (a few months), this is pretty cool! Will be adding a few of these. Thanks!
Crackdown? Doritos crash course? my goodness this ***** sucks evey other week I come here looking for a reason to purchase an Xbox and just come away remembering with why I didn't bother. Jeez
@Doublecell We're just listing the games that are entirely free to claim (and keep) on Xbox...
There are many other free-to-play games like Fall Guys, Call Of Duty: Warzone, Halo Infinite, etc, plus hundreds of games on Xbox Game Pass that are worth buying an Xbox for
@Doublecell you don't want to buy an Xbox because of this selection of free games? You need a little perspective there.
@Zenszulu notice in my original comment I said I come here every other week which means these are not the only games I find underwhelming free or not. Not here to bash anybody if they enjoy it or anything, just giving my honest personal opinion.
Thank you for the list! I'm a new XBox owner so it's great to have these all in one place.
So when you say 20+ games I guess you're including the dlcs for crackdown 1&2? Kinda disingenuous and misleading, no?
