I am considering getting an Xbox one for Christmas but I have been a little reluctant due to hearing horror stories about the long install times for games.
Has this been improved since launch greatly?
I understand there is a Xbox One update coming out in November will this help improve game install times?
Is it true that you can turn off wifi to increase the speed of game install times? ( I do understand that updates/patches to games have to download and be installed via an internet connection some files of which can be very large but can that be done in the background while I am playing the game that has already been installed from the disk of course excluding online multiplayer game modes.
The fastest way and only way to install a game on the Xbox One,is yes to turn off Wifi. Cause for some reason the Xbox One tries to install and update the game at the same time and it takes forever! I know cause it took a while to install Far Cry 4 when it was connected to the internet and it was awful. Good thing installing something takes likes minutes when the console is offline. But updating the game is a different story.
The Harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.
Installing and updating does take time and 'feels' like it takes forever after the previous generation. I guess the desire to play a new game and the extra wait whilst it installs feels like eternity. The gen 7 consoles are quicker to get into a new game as at most all you have to wait for is a smaller update. The games are on average around 5-6x smaller on last gen in terms of disc size and the patches are smaller too. As a result, it seems more instantaneous to get into a new game.
With Gen 8 consoles, the games are around 40GB and must be installed onto the HDD before playing. Some games can be played before they are fully installed - around 20% although I generally wait until they are fully installed.
A pessimist is just an optimist with experience!
Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??
Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...
I couldn't give an estimate on how long it actually takes but compared to PS4 it seems like it takes a while. That said, I wouldn't let it keep me from buying the console. It takes some time but if you owned a PS3, well, that console was far worse. Some games you had to wait 20 minutes before being able to play. Thankfully that's no where near the case with X1 and once the game is installed it moves along really quick.
I tend to find new games take around 20-30 mins to install 100% from disc. I don't use Wifi as my XB1 has a wired network connection, but I do stop the update from applying at the same time as the install. It's easy to do as it asks if you want to apply the update (?!?). I tend not to play the game before fully installed, but I believe some games can be started mid-installation. It may well need the patch applied before playing though, so you may have to juggle the installation and the patch to get it working.
You don't stop gaming because you get old, you get old because you stop gaming.
The install times on the Xbox One are poor yes, nothing has really changed since release date. But I always get my games delivered while I'm at work, then when the game arrives the missus puts it in my Xbox and it's ready for when I get home.
It does kill the whole midnight launch for people, get home at 12:30am and cannot play till after 1:15am. So just get the game delivered now.
But with that initial 1hr to prep the game, I would rather have that. Than move to the alternative.
Hi I'm new to xbox one the thing is its taking halo collection ages to install from disc I'm playing the first halo half way through it and it's still going is that normal
@lordpixie:
That game did take a while to download. I can't remember the exact length but I waited 40 minutes, maybe an hour for it to install. My friends said it took about the same time on their consoles.
