Topic: Xbox series x stopped working

I get my xbox series x today and was playing assassin's creed valhalla. It shut itself down and has now stopped working. I've done the things that Microsoft said to try to get it working and still nothing... Not happy at all

Are we talking game failure Unity style? Or hardware failure?

NEStalgia

Is it just isolated to that game in particular?
XBox able to boot back up?

Software or hardware issue?

Well, i don't speak Spanish, and i don't have a Facebook account.... I'm getting the gist not to buy valhalla.... But i still can't tell if we're talking about fried hardware or not. Yikes, if so.

@NEStalgia
Indeed.
Wasn't planning on playing Valhalla anytime soon, but like you say, if it's hardware, eeeek!

That doesn't surprise me with ps5 honestly. But xsx that is unexpected. I'm wondering if it's a valhalla issue or just doa hardware that bakes with any demanding game?

It's a hardware problem. The xbox is not turning on and the game is stuck in the console because I can't eject it

@NEStalg
It's the actual xbox series x. It won't turn back on and the game is stuck in the console

@NEStalgia I’m guessing; if it is anything; it’s a Valhalla issue. I’d also like to point out that was the one game that none of the reviewers could play. Where as there is pretty extensive testing of the other games by a ton of influencers.

@mousieone I'm going to try and get the Game store to replace it, but won't be easy as we are in the lockdown till beginning of December

Longlouie

mousieone

@Longlouie umm I wonder if MS would do it for you? Or did they insist on Game. Would that be easier to ship it to MS?

mousieone

Longlouie

@mousieone I'm going to try the shop first, then if not, it will have to be Microsoft.

@mousieone I can't imagine what a game would be able to uniquely do that could break the hardware though. Overheating? Other games should easily push as much heat. Unless it's a problem in the sdk itself and ac is randomly happening to hit it. It's worrisome either way, and I'm certainly not going to buy valhalla now, until something official is said about this, but i can't imagine there's anything a specific game could do that could actually break hardware in a physical way beyond overheating it. And the system itself should be managing heat issues.

Weird problem indeed. Unless the hardware isn't actually broken and it's in an odd software lock that the power button isn't responding. Something like that happened to my one switch the first few months with street fighter 2. Wouldn't power on no matter what i did. All sorts of odd steps even up bringing it back (i documented it an in an NL thread.)

@NEStalgia I don't think it's the game that did it. Just a faulty xbox. If you do get to hear about a way you sort the problem out, I would much appreciate to hear from, although I'm waiting to hear back from the shop. If I can't replace it, I will get a refund

@Longlouie it's certainly probable it was just a defective unit. From what others are saying it sounds like that game is a common thread though... Could just be because it's popular.

I'll certainly tag you if i happen to find/hear something though!

NEStalgia

Longlouie

@NEStalgia Yeah I think that the game is going to be a very popular game to play fist and the people that are having these problems are playing it at that time. I've contacted the shop that I got it from and they can't do anything about it, not even a refund until the 2nd of December, when we are out of lockdown. Well and truly f..ked off. I even pre loaded the new call of duty on there, ready for launch. Cheers mate. Would much appreciate it =)

Is it happening with the digital copy of Valhalla too?

@NEStalgia Umm but didn’t it happen Anthem? I seem to recall it bricking a few PS4s.

@Longlouie MS should be a bit more responsive dealing with it under warranty, I would think.

Still, it could be a DOA console, but I'm still not wholly convinced it's not still a software state error or some sort. If you haven't already be sure to try the options of leaving it unplugged for a while and then starting it back up, pressing and holding the power switch for a long time, etc. With my Nintendo Switch example, I'd been playing Super Street Fighter 2 when similarly the console just crashed and shut down. The power button wasn't responding, I did all the steps in the FAQ, and it never responded. But it wasn't broken, it was just in such a bad condition it wasn't listening to the power button, or even extended presses. And that one you can't unplug because it has a battery. I just played with it for a while with various long power presses, etc...I even forget what the exact solution was, but it was probably an hour of just trying the power button extended presses, putting it in the charging cradle and trying, etc, before it eventually did come back up - so a software issue can look like a hardware issue if it's locked hard enough. May not be the case here, but if you're stuck anyway, no harm to continue trying!

@mousieone Interesting, I hadn't heard about the Anthem issues. Sounds like that was a case of not actually damaging hardware but just creating a software issue that ended up with a boot crisis until worked around. Hopefully that's all that's going on here too, and there's some workaround to get it up and running again.

@HisD1sc1ple Fair skepticism these days, and interesting situation there with that.... I really doubt our OP here is anything other than a legit recipient of a crushing launch day, though. Even if there's a perfect launch, there's going to be some amount of duds, and nobody wants to be one of them. If this was just a rare case of a lemon, then it's a terrible launch day to have. if it's something like the SDK has a fatal flaw in it and certain games can hit it, that's a worrying thing across the board until patched. Right now it sounds like we don't have a bunch of PS fans claiming bad XB hardware but a common thread the few lemons turning sour while playing Valhalla... It could be something about the game (or a coincidence that that game hits something broken in the OS/API on MS's end), or it could be that that's the most popular game so odds are more people are playing that fully XSX enhanced game than any other, so a lemon just has higher odds of going bad with it.) But what's interesting is nobody so far is associating the issue with, say, Watch Dogs Legion, or Gears 5, two other fully XSX enhanced games that should also stress/heat the system equally. If we go a few days, or weeks without hearing much more about this, then it's fair to assume it's just a few unlucky units and nothing more broadly worrying than that. If it turns into "Joycon drift-gate" then Ubi will be addressing that.

@Longlouie I’m sorry :c I do hope this gets resolved for you faster than December 2nd. I hope you have better luck with MS directly.

@NEStalgia yeah, I heard they couldn’t the systems to boot in some rare cases. Either way you are probably right and it’s the one faulty launch day XSX. :/
