The title pretty much sums up my question; I very much enjoyed both the first and second Defence Grid games, and am looking for something similar. So, can anyone recommend any games that are very similar to the Defence Grid games? Thanks...
@Fiendish-Beaver Dungeon Defenders 1+ 2 both ok. Iron Brigade, you could try them. The former are both really good but like Defense Grid, they get really hard
@Fiendish-Beaver If you google games like Defence Grid on Xbox, it comes up with a good sized list and there's a hand full on Game pass. Give that a look as well pal. If you give Dungeon Defenders a go, message me and I will join you for a session
I got hooked on Defence Grid too, and while it’s not exactly tower defense, I ended up really enjoying some of the tactical planning in Battlefield games—especially big combo attacks and defensive strategies. If you're into that kind of large-scale coordination and action layered on strategy, check out https://crackrelease.com/battlefield-6/ for something different but still satisfying in that planning and reaction kind of way.
Hey @Fiendish-Beaver I forget what systems you own, on PC there are many, but I'll keep this to Xbox. The other suggestions here aren't too much like Defense Grid as they're more 3rd person action games with tower defense elements on top. Rambling now but my favorite of that genre is Orcs must Die. Another one that I really liked is The Riftbreaker which combines tower defense, isometric view, but is a twin stick shooter and involves going around a map doing missions and collecting resources to upgrade your defenses and your character. It's pretty neat.
On Xbox my best recommendation would be Kingdom Rush. Straight up traditional tower defense in the same vein as Defense Grid.
That's awesome. Thank you, @Jenkinss. I do have a gaming PC too (and a PS5, if there is something there as well), and for something like Defence Grid, I don't mind gaming on my PC, I just avoid it for most things because Xbox is my preferred platform...
Bloons TD is one of the best with 6 games in the series. Bloons TD 5 is free on PC browser somewhere, I can't remember the site, maybe Kongregate. Bloons TD 6 on android/ios is really pretty great and still plays well with touch, but can also be purchased on Steam, and probably plays best with M+KB. The only one I don't recommend is Bloons Monkey City on mobile.
Plants Vs Zombies is a different style, because the enemies are coming at you instead of moving past your towers, but is still most definitely in the tower defense vein and is in my personal top GOAT list. That one is on PC, mobile, and Xbox. While playable on Xbox, and I believe available with EA Play/GPU, I would recommend M+KB for that one as well, because the placement of plants and collection of resources is kind of wonky with controller.
Rampart is arguably the first and still one of the greatest Tower Defense games, if you're looking for a bit of retro gaming and genre history. You can search for that on My Abandonware and download for free on PC.
And finally, where Tower Defense games really took off and evolved into the type of game that Defense Grid is now, imo, was as custom maps in Starcraft: Brood War. Maps like Sunken Defense. As Starcraft is on PC Game Pass, you could check that out pretty easily.
Wow! Thank you, @AverageJoseph. That's a really in depth and helpful reply. I hadn't thought about Plant vs Zombies, but Starfield that has my attention too. I shall definitely look up both of them. Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed response. I truly appreciate it...
@Fiendish-Beaver totally agree with @AverageJoseph about Starcraft/Warcraft mod scene which I spent a bajillion hours in. My favorite all time TD from those games was Element TD. It since got released as a standalone game on Steam and is only $1 and also has a sequel Element TD2. Knowing you liked Defense Grid I can almost guarantee you will like Element TD, I can't think of a more similar game to be honest.
Also... Rampart, holy ****. MANY quarters spent in the arcade on that one. I haven't even thought of it in 30 years, didn't realize there were other versions of it.
Thank you for the heads of re: Element, @Jenkinss. I've just bought Element, Element 2 and Axon TD: Uprising, which is their latest game. All 3 came in a bundle. Cannot wait to have a go at them... 👍
