Poll: Helldivers 2 Isn't On Xbox Game Pass, So Will You Be Buying It?

If history tells us anything most won't be buying it.

This is why you likely won't see many PlayStation 1st party titles as they won't be on GP ergo a large percentage won't buy them. Very much a case of 'you reap what you sow'.

@NishimuraX That's exactly why Sony decided to invest millions of dollars into an Xbox port, because they know for a fact no one buys games on Xbox. Clearly they disagree with you.

Sony has direct information about the sales and performance of titles like MLB The Show and Destiny 2 on Xbox. If these games had done terribly on the platform, I imagine Sony wouldn't bother porting Helldivers 2 to Xbox.

I wonder if people will keep up this charade about no one buying games on Xbox when Sony, in fact, ports another game to Xbox consoles.

sony published and made the horizon lego switch game for the switch it did not sell well..this port of helldivers 2 is another sony gamble will it sell we shall see...

I would have got it for my PS5 already if I was interested which I am not. Having it on Xbox doesn't make it any more appealing to me not even a little bit.

While it's exciting that the game is coming to Xbox, I won't be purchasing it because it's not my type of game.

@johnedwin The Lego Horizon game was just bad, it didn't sell well on any platform I think, not even PlayStation. Helldivers 2 is at least a good game, so it does have a better chance at being successful. I bet Helldivers 2 would do really well on Switch 2

@somnambulance Concord failed because it looked horrible, it was Dollar Store Overwatch with Temu Guardians of the Galaxy characters, and in a world where Overwatch 2 and Marvel Rivals exist for free it was doomed to fail. No one even wanted to play the FREE BETA of it. And I’m a Sony fanboy saying this about a Sony game.

Helldivers 2 is a purely PvE team-based game (not hero shooter like Concord) with an amusingly over-the-top concept that plays out well. Plus folks who bought it actually liked it and gave it good word-of-mouth.

There’s no “pass” to be given, it’s just a genuinely well done game.

@somnambulance Helldivers 2 actually has a USP unlike Concord. Concord offered nothing new but Helldivers 2 is unlike anything else. Concord being sold at $40 also ran into the trouble of every other big hero shooter being F2P.

I already bought it on PC so I know it will be worth the money. My PC doesn't run it the best and I know my Xbox will do a better job so I already have the super citizen edition pre-ordered.

I guess I could've been playing it on PS5 but I don't like that controller and I don't want to pay for XGP and PS+ and XGP is the better deal of the 2.

Switch, PC and PlayStation gamers ALL buy more games than the average Xbox user and that has been a simple fact since Game Pass, for better or for worse, took ahold of the Xbox community.

As I said before that mentality of "Xbox players should show they care" it's really silly.

Why would I need to buy a game I'm not interested in and never wanted in the first place?
There's a lot of better games in which to spend my money.

@NishimuraX the numbers back it up the adoption rate of PlayStation games is low it’s why they are now coming out to PC faster and now you are seeing Xbox. The adoption rate for a game like AstroBot on PS was embarrassing. Even their highest adoption rate is in the 20% meaning 70-90% of PS gamers are not buying PS games. Nintendo games have a very high adoption rate because that’s why most people buy the Nintendo console. Most people on PS are playing Fortnite and COD.

@Questionable_Duck they spent that much developing the PC port, however, once a developer has made a PC port, the Xbox port is quite cheaper to make because all they need to change is the underlying API calls and defining what to limit based on the hardware. That is not easy and still takes time and effort, but is a lot cheaper than making a port for a completely different platform, which Xbox is not (wrt PC).

As @NishimuraX said, Game Pass has drastically changed buying habits on Xbox. Many game studios have backed up this claim, essentially saying it doesn't make sense to develop Xbox port unless they want to put it on Game Pass. Now the reason Sony has made this port is simple - they want the "whales" to buy this, and if these high spenders do, then Sony can earn large revenue from a small minority.

Helldivers 2 is not a third-party title, it's a first-party one (technically, second-party, but no one uses that term.) Sony may not own Arrowhead, but they own the Helldivers IP and have full control on what platforms Helldivers 2 releases on.

Need I remind you that Arrowhead themselves said that it isn't up to them to port Helldivers 2 to Xbox, but rather Sony?

This is literally no different than any other Sony first-party game coming to Xbox, because Sony willingly made the decision to bring it to the platform. No MLB-type contracts, no IP ownership changes, no excuses.

On top of being a great multiplayer game it comes with a very acceptable $40 price tag, while I don't think it will set Xbox on fire a good amount of people will dip in because of the low entrance fee.

The late August timing is problematic for me personally though as I’ll be away from Xbox for much of September. By the time I get back Borderlands 4 will be out and if that reviews well we’re likely to prioritise it. Then Little Nightmares 3 comes out not long after as another co-op game on our radar.

@betterthings You're right, I do think it's probably easier to port games to Xbox when they're already available on PC, but it doesn't change that Sony invested money into this and got one of their own first-party studios, Nixxes, some Xbox dev kits to make an Xbox port.

Many game studios have not said that it doesn't make sense to port games to Xbox without a Game Pass deal, only a few. I could probably count on one hand how many studios actually said that.

A handful of game studios have said that Game Pass has been great for their games, as well, so there's that to keep in mind.

Either way, the proof is in the pudding. You don't need dev statements to determine if it's worth porting games to Xbox or not, you just need to look at their actions. The large majority of devs have continued porting their games to Xbox, without any day-one Game Pass deals whatsoever. If this was a sentiment held by most of the industry, then there would be very few non-Game Pass games on Xbox.

You're also right about Sony targeting the whales on Xbox with Helldivers 2. Good live service games tend to do pretty well on Xbox, and most GAAS titles make most of their profit from MTX. In Helldivers 2's case, though, I imagine raw sales have also played a big role in the game's overall revenue streams.

@Weebleman my point is Playstation and Xbox see these games as first party. They own the IP and finance the game, so they see it as first party. They confirmed as much, whether you or I or @NishimuraX agree with it or not.

Xbox even took it a step further and said Ninja Gaiden 4 is first party. They don’t even own that IP.

Ultimately 1st or 3rd party is a matter of perspective. E.g. Forza Horizon 5 and Gears Reloaded are 1st party for Xbox. But from Sony’s perspective they are 3rd party.

i have this on PS5 but quit a long time ago. i just don't use the thing to justify ps+ on it. i only got it on ps5 cause gyro. it the pc ver supports gyro then i may get it on xbox if its play anywhere an use my switch 1 or switch 2 pro controller for windows store version.

not too keen on restarting but its been so long don't really care. higher frames is a plus. will see what my brother wants.

also, why does everyone keep saying xbox users need to prove they'll buy it. the game is a year and a half old, most people with an xbox also have other platforms an would've gotten it elsewhere since there was no promise this would ever happen.

@K1LLEGAL I get your points, especially when nixxes get involved, and hopefully I didnt come across argumentative (if i did, it was unintended). I just meant that there is a long way between a a third party company making an online multiplayer game of a Sony IP and something like Spiderman.

I'm likely to buy this, not at launch, but eventually, because it's pretty much the Starship Troopers game I never thought I'd ever see. The same biting satire, the same action of pretending that what you do actually matters in the end...
The thing that is even more epic about Helldivers 2 though is that, when the player base decides to flip the script, the developers don't sit there trying to work out how to keep the narrative going, they managed to flip it back.
The game's storyline when we get on it is very different from the original, and when Helldivers 3 comes along, no-one has a clue what that will be like. And that is why this game will sell.

There’s exactly 4 switch games that are higher than 20% adoption rate, and that’s a console that most people buy primarily for First Party titles. So your metrics are completely out of whack.

God of War, The Last of Us, Uncharted 4, Spider-man, Horizon: Zero Dawn all sold 20m+ units. Bear in mind only one Halo game ever broke 10m and none ever got close to 20m, not even during the Xbox 360 era.

BTW Indiana Jones managed 4m players while being available on Gamepass, meaning it couldn’t even get 20% of people that could play it for free(no additional cost) to launch the game.

Buying it, one of the very few PS games I actually wanted. FFVII was another. I mainly play co-op games and I've heard great things about this one, plus I love the ultra jingoistic vibe. I unironically love the BoS and Liberty Prime, I'm one of those people.

I wouldn't have bought if it was game pass, I never understood that mentality. Hey I like subscribing to a magazine, and also buying a copy on the store! Just flush your money down the toilet, or spend it on funco pops.

Majority of PlayStation games, besides God of War and ND games have super poor adoption rates. Hell over 60% of Sonys revenue is from 3rd party MTs. People are moving more towards PC, even Xbox is leaving the traditional console behind. It’s dying while the growth is over on PC and mobile. Sony is making the right steps by making their software more accessible but they are definitely being forced to by the current market. Xbox saw the writing on the wall years ago, they lost the console war but they also saw the stagnation of the market. Next gen will be interesting to see if Sony sticks to their current model while Xbox abandons the traditional console market.

Ragnarok sold 15m units in 12 months. God of War sold 10m in 13 months. You don’t seen to understand how time works? Or maybe you think comparing 5 years of sales to 1 year is perfectly reasonable.

Additionally, I don’t think you have any clue what a healthy adoption rate is(you realise Call of Duty games don’t even hit 20% on PlayStation, right?) and Sony’s first party sales percentage is in line with all historical data. The PlayStation division currently records record revenue and record Net Profit. I’m not really sure what you’re trying to say.

It's a multiplayer game with no campaign and will be dead and likely offline in a few years. Absolutely no way I would pay for this. Drop a Resistance Remastered Trilogy or port over the Horizon games and than we'll talk about a purchase.

@SeaDaVie I don’t think you understand how COD sales work. It’s an annual release schedule lol the sales COD brings in dwarfs anything PS puts out. It’s literally the best selling game every year besides 1 year and that was barely edged out by Hogwarts. What’s not healthy is that ND hasn’t released a game in how long now? 7 years? Intergalactic is still another 2-3 years out and Sony is supposed to rely on that to hopefully sell north of 10million copies lol there is a reason Sony has been chasing GaaS money.

@somnambulance the appeal of Helldivers is its instant fun. I have 250 hrs into the game, it’s fantastic. Concord felt like a blatant rip off of Overwatch with worse gameplay and less content.

Helldivers 2 and Deep Rock Galactic are in the same area of game style. There is clearly a market there for the games just waiting to be tapped into.

The way this contributor writes about a $40 game is absurd. That isn't even 'full price' for the majority of video games from a lot of major studios. If it doesn't sell at least decently, that's kind of scary.

@somnambulance I play 90% MP shooter (playing Overwatch 2 right now actually) I thought Concord was a slog to play. Didn’t enjoy the beta at all so I never gave the full game a chance because I didn’t like the betas at all.

Helldivers is a blast with friends. And quite the thrill on the higher difficulties. Gameplay is spot on, the loop is fun and engaging. And the arsenal they provide is fantastic.

You’re just making stuff up now. Please share a link to this statement. There’s zero evidence to suggest that Ragnarok won’t easily sell 20m+. It might even hit 30m.

How exactly is that “sad’? How many copies do you think a normal video game sells on a single platform? For some context, according to alinea analytics, Indiana jones sold 100k on its first week of sales on PS5, Doom: TDA was something like 200k on PS5. 2.5m would be more than any Yakuza game has ever sold across all platforms (except one game, which sold 2.8m). The first 6 Forza Gams(FM1-5 plus FH1) sold a combined 10m units by late 2014.

Platformer games are also very casual and sell a lot over time. Astro Bot will probably break 10m lifetime. Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy sold 2.5m units in it’s first Three months, and it’s now sold 20m units as of June 2024.

I already own Helldiver's 2 on PlayStation 5 but I am definitely buying Helldiver's 2 for Xbox day one. Once I do that, I won't need to renew my PS+ membership because the only online game I play on PlayStation is Helldiver's 2 and once it's on Xbox I won't need PS+ anymore.

Besides just that, I am extremely excited for the influx of players into Helldiver's 2 because HD2 is the type of game that thrives thanks to it's community and now when Super Earth calls my fellow Xbox divers will be ready to answer the call alongside our PlayStation brethren....

Nintendo release full games of their own IPs that are made by third parties and nobody says they are second party games.

I would say that games like Lego Horizon and Mario Rabbids would be 2nd party, but this is more of a first party game.

Either way, it’s good it’s coming to Xbox.

I’m a multi platform gamer and have PS Plus and Game Pass. I still buy games though because I enjoy physical collections.

But I have to admit, in recent years I pretty much wait for games to be £30 or under before I buy them.

Helldivers 2 was a no brainer first week purchase on PS5 because of the price and rave reviews. And it didn’t disappoint.

@somnambulance it just might not be your cup of tea, but it is a unique game that does things differently to much of the competition.

Personally, I played it with my two brothers and friend, we all have great rapport when gaming as we have literally played together since we could talk. And so this game was a natural fit for our group.

I personally found I didn’t enjoy it as much without them. Whereas my older brother simply played it non stop whether we were online or not.

We have played a lot of hero shooters together. And they are great fun, and I prefer Overwatch to HD2 personally, but to say Helldivers doesn’t offer anything unique is a bit crazy.

I don’t think I have played a game with the same gameplay loop as HD2 and the unique scenarios we find ourselves in.

In harder difficulties it’s an experience to just survive. The intensity of the battles, the failures, the accidentally killing each other, or getting wrecked by something that takes us by surprise. The feeling of getting out just in time. It’s all unique, imho.

Adding to that the games aesthetic of over the top, bone headed love for capitalism, democracy, and explosions is a winner for many.

I hope Helldivers II gets a physical release on Xbox.

I'm buying the game. Although it's not something revolutionary and I had a burnout for online games cause of playing destiny 2, this one looks like fun! And plus the price is 40€, so it's fine.

The best selling Call of Duty games sell about 30m copies across PS, Xbox and PC. Probably around 10% of the total player base.

I have a PS5 and a decent gaming PC, but have not bought the game, not because I am no interested, but because I do not like to play with people I do not know, and none of the people I do know will be buying the game, thus it means I won't either.

I play Gears 5 Horde most weekends with a couple of my friends, and so the gameplay in Helldivers 2 does appeal, as does its Starship Troopers* presentation style, so I am genuinely a little bit gutted that I won't get to play this...

*Starship Troopers* is a great film, and well worth a watch...

@Kienda Yep, Fire Emblem and Pokemon are as much of a first-party title as Helldivers 2 is. Nintendo doesn't own the companies who make the Fire Emblem and Pokemon games, yet no one considers them as third-party exclusives. Helldivers 2 is no different, since Sony owns the rights to Helldivers.

Ultimately, unless we honestly think that no third-party game sells on the Xbox, then Helldivers 2 should still sell pretty well. The vast, vast majority of third-party games do not go on to the Game Pass, and are instead purchased, so Helldivers 2 should be no different. Obviously, out of the three platforms that it will have released on (PC/PS5 and Xbox), Xbox will be a distant third partly due to Game Pass, but mainly because it has the smallest install-base, and there being many, many more people that game on PC (estimated to be around 1.86 billion) and the PS5 (around 60 million). The Xbox Series consoles only has around 27 million users, so if a similar percentage of gamers buy it on each of the three platforms, then Xbox is always going to come in third.

All that said, there will also be an element of 'that ship has sailed' coming into effect when it releases on the Xbox because the hype has died down for Helldivers 2. The truth is that for the game to have had the utmost chance, it should have released everywhere that it was ever going to release everywhere at the same time. Staggered releases never do as well, and so when everyone looks at how Helldivers 2 performs on the Xbox, this is something that should be taken into account...

I will say i'm glad Helldivers 2 is coming to Xbox, in fact i hope Sony adds Xbox to the day 1 releases for live service games like PC. I also thinks its really cool that Helldivers 2 and Gears are releasing the same day, its cool synergy and a nice handshake between Sony and MS. Also another positive one is one of my most hyped games is a MS published one in Clockwork Revolution, i thought it looked incredible and i'm happy MS are supporting it.

The numbers don't lie. Through GP Xbox users buy less games than those who predominantly game on PC and Nintendo consoles. That's a fact.

Yeah I'll be picking this up, and am okay doing so at the £35 price point. Will try to unite some pals across Steam and PS to get the business done for a while.
I've played Starship Troopers Extermination to death at this point so this could make a nice transition for me!

My decision on whether to play a game has NOTHING to do with whether or not its on Game Pass. If a game I want to play is not on Game Pass, I have no option but to buy to play. That doesn't mean I'll buy it day 1 though, that depends on how much I want to play, how well it reviews, the state of the game on release etc etc.

This maybe cheaper than the standard price we have seen Games being sold, but that doesn't mean I think its worth the money - many Free to Play games are as much fun.

Game Pass lets me play the games I want to play 'sooner' - I don't have to wait for a sale. It lets me play games I probably wouldn't have bought at all, not even in a sale. But I'll not play games I have little/no interest in just because they are on Game Pass or not play games I really want to play just because they aren't in Game Pass.

Game Pass may expand my Library so that I am not wasting money on buying games that either I don't really enjoy/like, don't get my 'moneys' worth from, or bought just to have something new. It stops me buying over hyped and/or mediocre games, games rushed to release but require months of work to optimise and polish, add features promised or expected etc.

Just because this is a Sony IP and whilst it maybe relatively popular on PC/PS5, its not necessarily a game I'd buy or play - the fact I own a PS5 and a PC too yet haven't bought has nothing to do with Game Pass so why should that make a difference on Xbox?

When you have 80m consoles but only sell 5-10m copies on that hardware, that means the majority didn't buy - regardless of how 'Popular' it is. 20m is still only 25% of ALL users that bought but most tend to sell to about 10%. When you only have 35m consoles and only sell around 2-4m copies, that's still selling to roughly the same percentage of your users. The PS5 probably out-numbers the Xbox by 2:1 so there should be 2:1 more people to buy the game.

As for the option to 'rent' first via Game Pass, it doesn't mean that I won't buy those games - I've bought numerous Game Pass games - often months after release because they are now on Sale and at a price I consider reasonable - the fact I've been able to play for months is irrelevant. I've also bought more DLC/Cosmetics in Game Pass games as my way to show support and enjoyment for their game. Of course there are games I tried on Game Pass I didn't buy, but most of them I'm glad I didn't waste my money on, these are games I also never finished or have a desire to return to.

@SeaDaVie I only spoke the truth. When people say PS players buy games it’s just not true the vast majority of them don’t and they just play Fortnite and COD. When only 3% of their gamers are buying their most acclaimed game last year. The notion that PS gamers are some saving grace for games sales is a fallacy. Majority of them are playing COD and Fortnite.

@MasterTanookiChief according to the official accounts of Sony and Nintendo more PlayStation premium software was sold every quarter than the Switch. The PS4 sold more software than any console in history, even at the point they stopped splitting the software data in q3 2020.

This is just premium software, no f2p games or digital content. That’s almost 600m units of software in 2 years, bought by PlayStation customers.

I pre-ordered it, I didn;t want to try running on my steam deck as it doesn't run super well in the harder levels, more than happy to drop in on a Xbox version

@somnambulance "Second party" is not technically a thing. It's a 1st party game, developed by an outside 3rd party studio. Nintendo does this all the time, for example. Ultimately, HD is 1st party since Sony owns and controls the IP.
If Nintendo contracted Sega to make another F-Zero for them, that new title would still be technically 1st party since Nintendo owns the IP.

@Questionable_Duck Millions of dollars??? Can you supply any proof of this? From what I’ve seen it costs them roughly six figures to port to PC.

@FatalBubbles big games are around $3-5m. Some of the port costs for PS games were in the Insomniac leak and the PC ports were in line with this.

Just think about the headline of this article for a second. This perfectly illustrates just how much Game Pass has devalued games. We are now at the point where a fansite has to ask the question whether a critically and commercially successful game is worth paying for if it is not included in a subscription. This is why people claim "Xbox players don't buy games", this is why Xbox is closing studios, this is why we are inundated with free-to-play and gatcha garbage.

I hope you Xbox fans really, really like Call of Duty, because that's all you're going to have left.

I bought it on PS5 days ahead of release. I later bought it on Steam when I had reached max level (50? 60? at the time) to see performance difference. Found out that the progression didn't sync, even though I used the same credentials etc…

I'm buying it for Series X since my PC is often occupied by one of my spawns and both of my DualSense drift (PS5 collecting dust til I solder one, I won't buy another).

I hope that cross progression will be a thing til then :'D

I already have it pre-ordered! I don't have a PS5 and wanted to play this game so I'm looking forward to it 😊

As well we all know some games will sell more than others. Whether or not this is going to be a good seller is yet to be determined.
I'm hoping it sells well enough for PlayStation publishing to consider publishing more tiles on Xbox in the future

Yes, a definite buy - in fact all my regular Horde crew are planning to pick this up. Looking forward to it - I would have bought it on PS5 but all my friends are on Xbox.

I am willing to bet you a million dollars that Microsoft would have still laid off thousands of employees and shut down studios if Game Pass existed or not.

The reason Microsoft is laying so many people off is because of $80 billion AI investments and $70 billion gaming acquisitions. The reason Microsoft cancelled Everwild, Perfect Dark, and the Zenimax MMO is because they took 7+ years to make and were nowhere close to being finished. None of this has to do with Game Pass. You'd think if Game Pass was the root of all the industry's problems, then no company other than Microsoft would be laying off hundreds of employees and shutting down studios.

@Questionable_Duck I am blaming Xbox for pushing Game Pass and by doing so devaluing games themselves. I am not blaming the users. If I had Game Pass I wouldn't buy games either, because that is what I have been conditioned to do. Look at Pure Xbox articles, three of every four have Game Pass in the title and they have said themselves that is because they get the most traffic. This Game Pass is all that matters narrative leads to the idea that games individually are not worth paying for and that has serious ramifications that are now being felt.

As for the games being cancelled for taking too long? That is a failure of Management, pure and simple.

Not every single game on Xbox is on Game Pass. Game Pass only covers a tiny fraction of the Xbox library, and most games never come to the service. It's absurd to think that Xbox gamers don't buy games at all, and only play stuff on Game Pass. If that were really true, then no publisher would bother to bring their games to the platform. Heck, that's why we're now seeing Sony bring their games to Xbox, starting with Helldivers 2, because they know Xbox gamers do buy games.

The language would definitely not have been a problem, but yeah my window to play games is really small - after the kids are in bed and before I've gotta get some sleep myself. I know your struggle though, I also play a ton of co-op games and almost never with randoms, just my wife and a few lifelong friends.
