Talking Point: Would You Buy A 'Revised' Xbox Series X|S Controller In 2024?

Absolutely, the current controller just feels outdated compared to the Dualsense, it’s basically the same controller from 2013 with a few teaks, it’s time for a new one with modern features and hopefully quieter buttons as was rumored.

For sure i would. I also like the quieter buttons that were rumored as well. Now we don’t know how much quieter. Could be 20% and do very little or 50% or more quiet and that would do wonders. I plan to trade mine in and get 2 on launch if they are available to get. Still prefer the Xbox controller and i have all 3 consoles. Something about the dual sense is just off for me. Still cramps my hand and thumbs after 30-40 mins.

As someone fortunate enough to have both a ps5 and a pc (formerly a series x) I much prefer the current xbox controller. The haptics and other features of the dual sense controller were an interesting novelty in Astrobot but that novelty wore off pretty quickly. The battery life on the dualsense with all the extra features enabled is abysmal, and pretty poor even with them disabled. When I’m using the ps5 I have to play with the controller hardwired half the time due to the battery issues.

I play using a series x controller on the pc and it’s a much more enjoyable experience. I never need to hardwire as I can just switch out the batteries for more rechargeable AAs. The rumble features are fine for some extra immersion, the ergonomics are fantastic and the battery life great.

I’d end up turning off any extra haptics or tigger tension stuff on a new controller to preserve the battery and resent paying extra for a feature set I’m not interested in. If a new controller does launch I hope they still have the legacy version as a purchasing option.

The standard Xbox controller feels very cheap, cheap plastic, clicky buttons and so on. So I’d be very interested.

But as said above. Depends if they patch features into games already out there.

My first Series Controller started drifting after less than a year, even faster than any of my Joycons. So I guess it'd depend on if it was bad luck or bad design.

If it had gyro aiming: Probably.

If it had gyro aiming and Hall effect sticks: Definitely.

I would wait to see if the features are actually implemented in games. I doubt they would get much support so I am probably not getting one of these unless I need a new controller.

I hate the speaker and gesture pad on ps4 and ps5 controllers. Keep those gimmicks away from xbox controllers.

Yes. My controller has seen better days. Gave my more recent purchase to my son who got drift on his.

As long as the new feature's do not interfere with the controllers excellent backward compatible capability.

Most definitely. Personal opinion it needs several improvements:

• Internal battery a must. Yes the Dual Sense runs out quickly but I've never had the problem personally as its always stored on a charging dock (which cost the same price as the Series X controller battery) so is always fully charged each time I use it. But I hate when I have to go searching round the house for spare batteries on my second controller when they've run out.
• The buttons need to be less plasticky and noisy. I basically can't play the Xbox in bed as the controller is too loud for the missus to sleep to and no chance I could get some game time in the morning and wake her up!
• The haptics are excellent on the Dual Sense but not necessarily a must have, but no reason not to include them
• Happy to keep the layout the same. I was getting a lot of hand cramp from the Series X controller and really hated the layout until I played 100+ hours of Starfield and the cramping went away. Then I went back to Dual Sense and hand was cramping until it didn't again. I've learnt your hand just get used to whatever you play with.
• lift to wake sounds a bad idea as its annoying enough on the Dual Sense when you pick up the controller to put on the charge station and accidentally push the pad and it switches the PS5 back on. Infuriating! But I suppose if the option can be turned off then its better to include it than not.

My opinions and obviously from reading others, everyone is different in what hey prefer.

Depends on the decision. Hall effect sensors and gyro aiming on a an elite controller? Absolutely.

But I'm not trading my back paddles any time soon. Way too integral for me.

Bring back the removable battery. The built in battery is the WORST thing about the Elite Series. 2.

Yes. I would definitely want to check out the new tech. No word on Hall Effect sticks. Fingers-crossed on the battery life. The Elite Series 3 can't be too far behind.

nope , i’m perfectly happy with my hyperkin xbox360 controller . the 360 was/is the best xbox controller

If it has better haptics then 100%. I love the feel of the current controller but it feels a little undercooked compared to the PS5 one.
So yeah, if it comes with the mentioned features, I would get one day one.

I have a white core controller and the Xbox controller is the best controller for me out of all the consoles.
I guess however the new controller coming out won’t have the adjustable tension on the thumb sticks, which is why I got the core controller.
The standard Xbox controller thumb stick tension is just to lose for me.
Well we know next will be elite 3 so that will have all the features.

I'd love to try haptic feedback but couldn't live without the paddles on my Elite.

Definitely. As a new member to the Xbox family since almost a year the controller is the only thing that doesn’t feel good. It feels so plastic-y compared to PlayStation controllers. Adding haptic feedback would already make a big difference.

I've never actually used the new/current Xbox controller as I really like my Elite 2, and so use that instead.

As for the PS5 controller and DualSense, in my opinion, it is vastly overrated, and indeed often annoying, as is the sound coming out of the controller itself. I probably get about 5 hours out of the battery, and as I have two of them, I tend to keep one on charge in readiness for the other running out, which is a far more frequent occurrence than I encounter with my Xbox controller.

Upshot is, if Microsoft bring out an Elite 3, then I'll definitely buy that, but unless it really is worthwhile I probably will not buy a new standard controller as I much prefer the heft of the Elite...

Nope. The controller is already near perfect to me and I have a ton of rechargeable batteries. I have 4 controllers so no need for anymore.

If it's the controller that they had in the leak then yes I'd get it. My biggest requirement now is the hall effect sticks cuz I've had stick drift in two controllers now and that's gotta stop. I got a wired 3rd party controller with the hall effect sticks as a result and ain't buying anything from Xbox without that tech.

I don't mind the Xbox controller, just wish it was overall quieter.

If the improved controller means a quieter gaming experience, I'd be interested in one.

I'm not overly fussed with haptic feedback or adaptive trigger. It was a neat novelty when I first got a PS5, but now I don't even pay attention to it at all or "miss it" when switching back to gaming on Xbox. To me, it's just something to increase the price of the controller and nothing more.

You can add all the bells and whistles you want, A”all I want is at least 2 back buttons on standard controllers

I've had 5 Xbox controllers and all have drift.

I use DualSense controllers with my PS5 when I can be bothered to play it (ahem, Gran Turismo basically) and honestly I still don't get the hype. It's definitely the best controller Sony has ever put out but the bar there has always been decidedly low as PS controllers have always been painfully small in my opinion.

Having said that, I wouldn't mind if Xbox controllers had the same feedback features but at this point I'm so used to using the back paddles on my Xbox Elite 2 controllers that I probably wouldn't consider anything that didn't have that feature.

Yes, please. A revision is much needed for the Xbox controllers. I love my Elite Series 2, but the standard Xbox controller, not so much. The ABXY buttons make my thumb sore after a while with certain games (Gears). Make those buttons flat and less noisy. The rumble is dated. Using AA batteries is fine. Gyro would be great and hopefully make it more of a standard going forward.

Just one more reason why I prefer multi-plats on PS5 over my Series X.
The Dualsense Controller has been a game changer this Gen. Besides battery life, everything about the Dualsense is better! It's my favorite controller of all time! The Switch Pro controller is right behind it.

The Xbox 360 controller is amazing and Microsoft improved upon it with the Xbox One/Series controller. But Sony passed them up with the Dualshock 4 and even more so with the Dualsense.

They're decent enough controllers but I'm just not a fan of the asymmetrical sticks. Decent for driving games though

@HonestHick This is one of those weird quirks folks bring up between the two controller lay outs I just cant figureout. I'm 6'5" or 195.5 cm's and have pretty large hands. 1000's of hours on Dualsense and never cramped.
I really wonder if it's playing with offset sticks for years upsets the tendons? I love the Xbox controller, but it does feel a tad cheap and my 1st stopped working so I'll gladly take a revision

@GamingFan4Lyf " Increase the price and nothing more"- I get that point. However when the controller is implemented properly its an aewsome experience, and it really does feel proper next generation.
When I first got my Xbox X controller I was gutted, it felt and sounded "cheap". It did have a slight break in period, and I think it's decent, but it was the first controller I've ever had crap out on me, right after Black Friday too ha ha.

Back paddles need to be ***** standard. It's way overdue.

not sure tbh... I did LOVE the gyro on my switch pro controller for Zelda BOTW archery, so would certainly find a use for that feature... back paddles sound good, but on a personal note, due to nerve damage in my right hand (very embarrassing story involving nakedness and non-safety glass doors!) I'd struggle to be able to use them

@CallMeDuraSouka There was a slight change in shape between the XB1 and Series controllers. I loved the feel of Series controllers at first, but my hands prefer the XB1 ones. I also have a DS Edge and absolutely hate symmetrical sticks.

@CallMeDuraSouka i am not sure what it is about PS controllers that just never worked great for me. But PS3-PS5 were just never my industry preferred controllers. I agree it’s time for Xbox to build a more premium and feature rich controller. I think this new one will really be nice. There is zero reason to bring it out and not have it be better in almost every way. At least that is my hope.

Yeah it has to have precision haptics. I guess hall Effect sensors are like unicorns nowadays. I mean the Dreamcast had them so I'm confused here. That aside modular is cool to so long as it doesn't create other issues. All's Xbox has ever needed was some bells and whistles and the controller design itself is spot on. Do NOT change the shape or feel of the controler. Also you can't completely ramrod us Elite freaks. Launch them at the same time, I don't care about the price as much as others might. Just make sure we aren't waiting eons to get a Elite version.

I’ll take anything with quieter button presses and a better d-pad. The ergonomics are too notch though. Xbox has always had a comfy controller.

Of course. I'd love to play Forza games with gyroscope steering like GT7 and GT Sport. Will keep my expectations low, though, so as to not have them shattered later.

I hope they fix the d-pad. I've never been happy with the Xbox d-pad. Either they feel too stiff, too clicky, or have a weird shape (still miles better than the Gamecube d-pad though).

@CallMeDuraSouka I guess. It was cool with Astro's Playroom for the first level or so, but once the novelty wore off it was just another vibrating controller.

DualSense went completely unnoticed in Deathloop, Returnal, God of War Ragnarok, Demons Souls, and Ratchet & Clank.

So even if Xbox adds similar technology, it will go entirely unnoticed to me.

I find properly implemented 3D Audio (whether via Dolby Atmos or Tempest) to be significantly more next-gen and immersive than gimmicks in the controller.

I doubt it, but who knows. Maybe they introduce a variant I cant live without.

Would need to be an Elite for me, because even with all those new features a lack of back switches would feel like a downgrade. Plus even then, my wife had a design lab elite made for me as a gift fairly recently so not ready to move on from that, it's sentimental!

If it's less prone to disconnection, that would be a help.

I'm guessing these coming was the reason behind that random Xbox pad sale on amazon earlier in the month.

As long as I want have to replace at 13 months later, I'll be happy.

Any new controller would be fine, so long as it feels as good in the hands as the regular X|S controller, but is also much quieter than it.

Man, I hate how ‘clicky’ the current X|S controller is, it’s ridiculous.

@Kaloudz I'm glad to see the Dreamcast controller mentioned. That was the pinnacle of comfort for me too. I'd put the Switch pro controller as 2nd though, very closely followed by the current Xbox controller.

I have a PS5 and the DualSense is overrated in my opinion. I find the resistive triggers annoying and crunchy and the haptics a bit of a novelty that doesn't really get used very well. Plus the sharp edges on the prongs just aren't very comfortable for long play sessions. And of course, the left stick is positioned incorrectly. 😂

I would welcome gyro in a new Xbox controller. Everything else is fine for me.

@Kaloudz It really was. I managed to get a boxed, brand new one from Japan last year for my Dreamcast. It's just incredible.

I think it depends on what the new controller brings for features and feel. I don't buy a controller just because it is new, I buy a controller that will significantly improve my gameplay or gameplay experience.

Haptics are great, but Let's hope the new controller is less CLICKY lol it drives me nuts!

If it includes the paddles then it will be perfect and Elite controllers won't be as necessary as they are for me since I tried them, earlier than most because it was included with the Xbox One Elite bundle that launched before the controller. I didn't buy that bundle because of the controller, it was just my first Xbox! The regular bundles were all sold out.

I would be interested in an updated controller if it fixes the trigger sticking issues. Forza Horizon 5 and Motorsport each ruined a controller due to trigger sticking.

Haptics are not appealing to me. I'm not sure why someone would want to play games with a persistently shaking controller. I turned this ***** off on PS5.

If a revised Xbox controller had gyro and the same linear motor rumble like the switch and dual sense I'd have a reason to use Xbox controllers on PC for once

I hope it has the rumored gyroscopic controls. I think devs have taken way too long to integrate motion controls into their games, and I’m not talking like Wii waggling - I mean like CoD:MW3 on PS5 and Warframe on Switch. It’s such a huge advantage on consoles and while not competitive with traditional mouse and keyboard it’s so much more comfortable than strictly joysticks.

I'm used to Elite Series 2/Core controllers now, so I wouldn't buy a controller without back paddles. I would also only upgrade my controller for one with Hall Effect joysticks (that still have adjustable tension...I can't go back to how loose the default sticks are). Swappable rechargeable batteries would be nice too. I don't care about haptics or motion controls; maybe they'd be cool, but they seem gimmicky, and would waste the battery. And haptics as speakers is just stupid.

They're doing way too much to up the price of the controller without doing the obvious thing that would make it last longer (Hall Effect sticks). Idk what exactly they mean by "modular" sticks. Does that mean easily replaceable? I wonder how much the replacements would cost. Or does it mean just changing the top part of the stick, like on the Elite controllers?

Basically I just want an Elite Series 3 with Hall Effect joysticks and replaceable battery.
