I’ve wondered if for premiere Day 1 releases they do some sort of voucher system where you get to choose X number of titles to play over a period of time. It would better tie subscriptions to specific titles driving the service and allow them to pare back the sales losses while still maintaining an option for Day 1 on those titles for those who are interested.
Something really worth calling out that isn’t mentioned in the article is that Gamesradar didn’t actually conduct a new interview here. They’re literally using quotes from directly after the Xbox Showcase and the Ball interview with TheGameBusiness and seem to be passing them off as direct quotes to Gamesradar.
It doesn’t change that Booty wasn’t making things more confusing, but I’ve found that Asha and Ball have been singing out of the same hymnbook this whole time.
Also, as a brief 2 cents on live service, I think like others have shared it comes down to live service being the primary business model vs live service elements. Sea of Thieves has its monetization model built around live service. Gears is primarily monetized based on game purchases.
