Reporter Claims Game Pass Is 'Absolutely Detested' By Some Xbox Studio Leaders

There's been a lot of speculation in recent weeks about the future of Xbox Game Pass, especially following the decision to remove "day one" Call of Duty releases from the Ultimate tier in order to bring the price down per-month.

Some people are of the belief that Xbox might do the same with other "day one" releases in order to encourage more sales for those titles, and in a recent episode of the Triple Click podcast, well-known Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier suggested that "a lot" of people in Xbox studio leadership "absolutely detest" the service.

"There are a lot of people out there in studio leadership within Xbox who absolutely detest Game Pass and think it has destroyed the value of their games, think it has taken away the value from all games in general just as a service, and has been a detriment to the games industry in those people's views because of how it devalues games."

Interestingly, Windows Central's Jez Corden ended up doing some digging into this as well, and spoke to an apparent former Xbox studio lead who echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that adding games into the service on day one "sends a message to consumers that the games don't have inherent market value".

Of course, there are most likely many people inside of Xbox who are totally in favour of the "day one" Xbox Game Pass model as well, but at the very least it sounds like it's getting a mixed reception amongst studio leadership.

What does that mean for the future? Well, to be honest, we'd be gutted if they started pulling "day one" first-party games out of Xbox Game Pass, and subscriptions would surely fall dramatically in the process. Windows Central highlights that XGP is driving billions in revenue for Microsoft, and we know it's at around 30 million members right now.

Let's wait and see, eh? It's one thing announcing that Call of Duty isn't part of Game Pass on day one anymore, but it'd be a totally different scenario to pull something like Halo or Gears out of the lineup. That would draw some seriously negative attention, so it's a slippery slope if that's the path they ever decide to go down.
