Yesterday, we brought you the news that Mass Effect 5 was being cancelled and BioWare was being shut down by Electronic Arts, and now a trailer for something called "Mass Effect Universe" has suddenly been posted online.

The trailer is spreading like wildfire on social media, but it can be tracked back to a "burner account" that simply shared the video when asked to provide one. It'll likely get taken down, but we've already spotted tons of reuploads for it.

We're not going to host it here, but it's pretty easy to find if you look around.

Initial reactions to this have been extremely positive in terms of the trailer itself, but there's also been a lot of despair over Mass Effect 5's cancellation as a result. The video shows what is said to be "in-engine footage" using "pre-production assets", and it certainly looks the part - although some elements perhaps seem a little off to us.

There's definitely debate right now about whether it's actually the real deal or something that's been cooked up at the last minute using AI to fool people, although it seems more likely to be a leak from a disgruntled former dev.

We'll let you know if it ends up being fake after all, but ultimately a lot of fans are wishing they didn't watch it either way, as it's ended up getting them excited for something that isn't ever going to come to fruition.
