Call Of Duty Adds New 'Classic' Matchmaking In Response To Black Ops 1 & 2 Ports 1

Some would argue games were better back in the day, and as Season 5 of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 rolls out with "a new matchmaking system" inspired by classic Black Ops titles, that statement might actually hold some truth, at least for today.

In a post, the official Call of Duty Twitter account reflected on the lessons learned over the past year and shared some joy over the positive response to the recent PS5 ports of Black Ops and Black Ops 2.

"Over the past year, we've continued to learn a lot about Multiplayer matchmaking through player data and community feedback. We’re also excited to see all the recent love for Black Ops and Black Ops II, which reinforced that there are many elements of those experiences that players appreciate."

It turns out players have been vibing with the classic multiplayer matchmaking systems used by Activision in the early 2010s. That feedback appears to have left an impression on the developers, who are now implementing changes to Black Ops 7's matchmaking as a result.

"Starting this week with Season 05, we're updating Black Ops Classic, Quick Play, and Party Games in Black Ops 7 with a new matchmaking system inspired by those classic games."

Of course, it'll take some hands-on time with the latest Black Ops 7 update to fully understand exactly which "elements of those experiences" Activision thought were worth bringing back.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the classic matchmaking systems. I miss the unpredictability of multiplayer before bleddy skill-based matchmaking became the norm, when every lobby felt like a wild west of varying abilities. One match you could face off against your new arch-nemesis and hope to never see "nO0bSl4yeR" ever again, whilst the next could be a XP-farming masterclass. That variety kept each game feeling fresh and hooked me far longer than matching up against players who, frustratingly, were just better than me.
