Digital Foundry Labels Sony's PS5 Exclusivity Pivot As A 'Defensive Move Against Project Helix'

You may have seen some recent reports that Sony has decided to stop porting its big single-player PS5 exclusives over to PC, via the ever-reliable Jason Schreier. According to the well-connected journalist, PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst confirmed the pivot in a recent meeting, as shared this week on social media:

While this news isn't directly relevant to us from a Microsoft perspective, we did think it could have significant ramifications for Xbox and Project Helix - and that's something that the folks over at Digital Foundry agree with us on. Recent analysis on the news from DF even goes as far as saying the decision feels like a "defensive move against Project Helix". Do you agree with that take?

We don't think it's quite that cut-and-dry, but either way, the move will definitely affect Microsoft's next-gen Xbox - if this reporting is accurate. Under Sony's previous direction, its PS5 to PC ports would have been playable on Microsoft's upcoming console/PC hybrid, but now that won't be the case - at least in terms of those big PlayStation games being created from this point forward. We don't know if that eventuality has gone into Sony's thinking here, but it's certainly a curious time to stop making your biggest games available on PC.

It also comes at time where, well, Microsoft is reconsidering its own approach to exclusive games moving forward. Of course, the Windows owner is always likely to bring its games to PC these days, but their future strategy in regards to PlayStation and Nintendo is now up in the air - since Asha Sharma came in as Xbox boss anyway. We'll have to see how that all shakes out, but we could be in for an unpredictable few years as next-gen rolls in. It seems a lot of Xbox fans want Microsoft to go back to making exclusives as well!

Anyway, we think this move is worth getting some discussion going on. Do you think Project Helix is a big part of this move, a small slice of Sony's decision, or no real factor at all?
