It's not very often that we expect the Xbox Series X to beat the PS5 Pro in terms of visuals or performance, but apparently that's the case with the new upgrade for Assassin's Creed Unity, which has a graphical advantage on Xbox.

This is according to the fine folks at Digital Foundry, who advise that the Xbox Series X version of Assassin's Creed Unity is now outputting at 2880x1620 compared to the PS5 and PS5 Pro's resolution of 2304x1296. There are some things you can do to try and improve the image on PS5 Pro, but it still doesn't match up to the Series X - simply because of the lower resolution output.

"Xbox Series X is by far and away the best option, with a 2880x1620 output - 75 percent of 4K on both axes. Unity predates TAA and it doesn't use dynamic resolution scaling, so those extra pixels matter."

The 60FPS frame rate is apparently a bit more consistent on the PS5 Pro, but the Xbox Series X's VRR support gives it another advantage:

"The highest overall frame-rate is delivered by PlayStation 5 Pro, but to be honest, I'd still prefer Series X: Xbox's system-level VRR works on back-compat games where PS5 does not. So, the vast resolution increase and VRR support means that the game looks best on Series X and runs in a consistently smooth manner."

Surprising stuff, then! Just to be clear, we're not trying to use this as any kind of "proof" that the Xbox Series X is better than the PS5 Pro — Assassin's Creed Unity is a decade old after all — but it's just interesting that Xbox's console has come out on top in this case, and we're pleased to see the upgrade running so well on it!

The news for Xbox Series S owners isn't quite as good, with Digital Foundry pointing out that the small resolution boost to 960p isn't really worth it, but it at least runs at a fairly stable 60FPS, and that's arguably the most important thing.

If you fancy trying all of this out for yourself, Assassin's Creed Unity is currently part of Xbox Free Play Days until the end of the week, so everyone can play the game for free right now with no catches!
