Pirate games have always had major potential on Xbox, but in recent years, titles like Skull & Bones haven't really managed to live up to the hype. Windrose might be a different story though — it just launched in early access on Steam this week, and it's already proving to be a massive success.

Windrose is a PvE survival adventure that challenges you to explore, build, fight, and ultimately survive amidst an open world with procedurally generated biomes, and it can be played either solo offline or in online co-op for up to eight players. In just 48 hours, this game managed to sell 500,000 copies, and it's only just entering its first ever weekend where it'll likely sell hundreds of thousands more. Talk about an impressive start!

There's inevitably been a lot of interest in an Xbox version of Windrose, and the developer has issued a statement about being "enthusiastic about eventually coming to consoles", but they want to prioritise the 1.0 launch on PC first.

Here's the statement that was provided to GameSpot:

"The team doesn't have any other updates about Windrose on consoles but do want to reiterate that they are enthusiastic about eventually coming to consoles but are focused on 1.0 launch first."

Of course, this is another one of those games that will likely work day one on Xbox Project Helix when the next-gen Xbox console hopefully arrives in a year or two, as Helix has already been confirmed to support PC games and Windrose already has native Xbox controller integration.

It's just a case of playing of the waiting game! Regardless of when Project Helix launches, with games like this constantly coming out of nowhere and proving massive hits on Steam, it bodes well for Xbox's strategy with the next console — we should be looking at a future where waiting around for PC-only games on Xbox is a thing of the past.

Here's a bit more on Windrose to whet your appetite in the meantime:

Embark on a PvE survival adventure in the Age of Piracy. Fight on land and sea, solo or with friends. Build, craft and explore vast open world filled with dark secrets. Master soulslite combat and take on challenging bosses, command your ship and plunder unspoken treasures!
