Xbox Fan Claims To Have Spotted New Game Pass Codename Featuring Older First-Party Titles

There's been a lot of talk about Xbox Game Pass recently and whether Microsoft might be trying to implement a cheaper version of the program for subscribers (thanks to a report that was widely shared earlier this week), and so it's pretty interesting that one Xbox fan claims to have spotted a new Game Pass codename behind the scenes.

This is coming from the Better xCloud account on Twitter/X, which does a great job of highlighting all the latest Xbox Play Anywhere and Stream Your Own Game additions, but also any other discoveries they happen to come across. The latest one was published on March 18th when they shared that TRITON was a new "Game Pass codename".

"Wake up babe, another Game Pass codename dropped. Games with this codename so far: DOOM 64, Psychonauts, Retro Classics"

Nothing more was said on this until literally a few hours ago, when it was revealed that TRITON now apparently has 12 more games attached to it, all of which are older titles from the Xbox Game Studios / first-party catalogue.

Here's a look:

Now, as you can see, Better xCloud is very much referring to this as a new Xbox Game Pass codename / program, but we probably should take that with a pinch of salt — it could be that it's referring to something slightly different. For example, it was mentioned as part of the Xbox backwards compatibility reveal recently that "new ways to play some of the most iconic games from our past" would be rolled out later this year, and we reckon these titles would fit the bill.

It's also interesting that DOOM 64 and Psychonauts — two games that are listed here as part of the TRITON codename — both went free for a very brief period on the Xbox Store yesterday, before then reverting back to their usual prices.

Who knows what'll become of TRITON (if anything), but it's an interesting development all the same. Would you be interested in a really cheap Xbox Game Pass tier that only includes older Xbox first-party titles? Do you think it might have something to do with the backwards compatibility revival planned for later this year? Let us know down below.
