We know that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 absolutely swept award shows across the globe last year with its surprising and heartfelt take on the humble turn-based RPG, and it's already looking like 2026 might have another critical darling on its hands in the form of Resident Evil Requiem, which is now tied as the best-ever user-rated game on Metacritic.
Yep, both 2025's Clair Obscur and last month's Resident Evil Requiem have a 9.5 User Score on Metacritic right now; the best user ratings ever accumulated on the platform. As we've been writing this up, the site has switched a few times in terms of what it shows as number one - but the all-important point here is that the new Resident Evil game is matching up with a title that was absolutely adored last year.

Of course, Requiem has gone down very well with critics too. On Metacritic itself the game has currently landed at an 88 overall score, and here at Pure Xbox, we gave the game an Excellent 9/10 score as well. We'll link to our write-ups on both of those points in the related articles box down below.
From here, it's pretty much all eyes on how the rest of the year goes down, then. Clair Obscur dropped in April 2025 and carried its momentum all the way through to awards season, but will Resident Evil Requiem be able to do the same? We must admit, there's going to be some stiff competition here in 2026, with the likes of Fable, GTA 6 and more scheduled for later in the year.
