Yesterday, Xbox released an extended gameplay breakdown of Obsidian's anticipated RPG Avowed. While the game will take a lot from the Pillars of Eternity titles, it will be doing things a little bit differently in terms of character builds.

Speaking to PC Gamer, the game's director Carrie Patel explained how Avowed will be a "classless" experience. It's not an enforced class setup and players can continue to respec their character as they progress:

"There's multiple ability trees...The player will be able to kind of pick and choose their abilities as they level up and progress, and you will be able to respec."

The starting points will instead be different background archetypes, however they don't restrict players to a particular build.

While it might not necessarily be the most welcome news for fans of the Pillars of Eternity series, this game will be its own experience and does take place from a first-person perspective where you're involved in real-time combat.

Here's a bit more about this change in Avowed (via Xbox Wire), courtesy of gameplay director Gabe Paramo:

“We wanted to be able to grab as many abilities from the trees as possible – and categorize them a little bit differently so that the player doesn‘t feel locked into a single choice at the start of the game. They can mix and match between different abilities to get some variety. You can commit to being a fighter, but it’s not an enforced class setup.” And if you want to try out a new suite of abilities, you can always respec your character."

Avowed launches this fall on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Game Pass. What are your thoughts about this level of freedom instead of enforced classes? Leave a comment below.
