Original story (Tue 11th Jul, 2023): The classic 1984 game Karateka is getting a starring role in a brand-new "interactive documentary" launching on Xbox later this year courtesy of Digital Eclipse - the masterminds behind Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration.
Karateka was created by Prince of Persia developer Jordan Mechner, and is described by Digital Eclipse as having "changed the industry", setting the tone for "decades of cinematic gaming experiences to come".
In the game, you'll be able to explore the history of Karateka through video, digital artifacts, audio, photos and more, and it'll also include the playable final retail versions of Karateka along with unfinished prototypes and the first official release of Deathbounce, which is an arcade-style shooting game that Jordan was making prior to Karateka.
You'll even get the chance to play Karateka Remastered, which is a brand-new version of the original with updated graphics, music and gameplay, as well as a new version of Deathbounce called Deathbounce: Rebounded.
"The Making of Karateka is the deepest, most exhaustive exploration of the making of a single video game that’s ever been attempted in a video game itself."
Better yet, Digital Eclipse says it'll be releasing more interactive documentaries for additional games as part of a "Gold Master Series". We don't have a date for the Karateka one just yet, but it's expected to arrive later this year.
