GTA 5 Saints Row

Saints Row burst back onto the scene last month with a soft reboot of sorts on Xbox Series X and S. Well, we say 'burst' but more like limped; we didn't enjoy much about the series' latest entry. It doesn't seem to have done that well commercially either, at least in Europe.

GamesIndustry has posted its latest round of European sales data, for the month of August 2022. While some segments of data are missing, this chart broadly covers both physical and digital sales across the region. GTA 5, a game that launched in 2013, was the best-selling game in August, and it beat Saints Row during its launch month. Ouch.

1 Grand Theft Auto 5 (Rockstar)
2 Saints Row (Deep Silver)
3 FIFA 22 (EA)
4 F1 22 (EA/Codemasters)
5 Gran Turismo 7 (Sony)
6 Spider-Man Remastered (Sony)
7 Nintendo Switch Sports (Nintendo)
8 Mario Kart 8: Deluxe (Nintendo)
9 Horizon: Forbidden West (Sony)
10 LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga (Warner Bros)
11 Far Cry 6 (Ubisoft)
12 Red Dead Redemption 2 (Rockstar)
13 The Sims 4 (EA)
14 Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition (Mojang/Nintendo)
15 Dishonored (Bethesda)
16 Two Point Campus (Sega)
17 Elden Ring (Bandai Namco)
18 Grand Theft Auto Online (Rockstar)
19 Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (Nintendo)
20 Mario Strikers: Battle League Football (Nintendo)

Rockstar's last GTA game is a phenomenon rarely seen; it continues to sell gangbusters almost a decade after it first launched. That'll be helped by its multiple re-releases across generations, but still, this is no-doubt a disappointing return to the limelight for the Saints Row series.

The rest of the chart reflects a bit of a barren spell for AAA games, as a lot of these titles are from months and even years ago. Still, the release schedule should pick up as we hit the fall season, and then what looks to be a pretty stacked 2023.

Are you surprised to see GTA 5 beat 'Saints Row' in 2022? Let us know in the comments!
