Now that we finally know the release date for Grand Theft Auto 5 on Xbox Series X|S, we're left wondering, will there be a free upgrade of any kind? So far, it's looking like a no, sadly.

Ever since the current-gen version of GTA 5 was announced, there's been no mention of an upgrade path for last-gen players. Rockstar has been quick to tout what's new for the Xbox Series X|S version, with no mention of a free upgrade.

While we understand GTA 5 has been out on Xbox One since 2014, it is a bit disappointing there seems to be no upgrade path. This behemoth of a game has sold almost 150m units, not to mention the countless Shark Cards they'll be shifting for GTA Online.

But, that probably shows exactly why there won't be an upgrade. If Rockstar, and particularly Take-Two, think they can get some of that user base to double dip, that's a lot of money on the table.

The bright spark for GTA Online players is that there will be a new, standalone version of the online component for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S at launch, so presumably it'll be much cheaper than the main game. PlayStation users will even be getting it free for 3 months, so fingers crossed it'll go entirely free-to-play on Xbox after that point.

Do you think GTA 5 should have a free upgrade option on Xbox Series X|S? Let us know in the comments.
