The Ascent launched on Xbox Game Pass last week, resulting in thousands of players downloading and checking out the game. Despite that, it's still managed to be a huge success for publisher Curve Digital, which is celebrating its largest ever opening weekend in sales revenue after the game's launch.
Over the weekend, The Ascent achieved record breaking figures, generating over $5 million in total sales. Not only that, but it also hit the number one position in the Steam Global Charts. Developer Neon Giant also commented on its success, saying it was "overwhelmed by the positive response" following the game's launch.
"We have been overwhelmed by the positive response from the community and all our players. As a small team of twelve, creating The Ascent has taken a monumental effort, and we cannot express how grateful we are to everyone who has played the game and given us feedback."
There are still a few issues that need ironing out with the game. The co-op, both online and offline, is reportedly very temperamental. Neon Giant has already acknowledged the issue and is said to be working on a fix. Along with this, Xbox Game Pass for PC users are currently lacking DLSS and ray tracing support - something the Steam version possesses. Again, this is an issue the developer is working on a fix for.
Regardless of this, it's not hard to see why The Ascent is proving to be popular. In our hands-on, we really enjoyed our time with the game, complimenting its action and addictive gameplay loop. It's not only another Xbox Game Pass success story, but proof that games included with Xbox Game Pass can still sell in impressive numbers.

Interesting, about 165-185k sales if they made five million in total sales. I'm curious to see how many were on Xbox compared to Steam. It seemed Death's Door had less pre-release fanfare and sold approximately 100k. It would be impossible to tease out if the 65-85k sales were mostly due to extra marketing or gamepass availability/talk.
Happy for the developers. How does everyone like the game? It seem many either love it or hate it.
Definitely better than Xbox version metacritic suggests..8 out of 10 game...lovely world
5 million divided by 12 oh boy that's a lot of money!
They deserve it though, it's a pretty fun game! The world building is amazing
Yeah, this game deserved better reviews. It has some bugs but it’s still awesome. World is beautiful to look at and combat is tough but fun. Great game!
I'm just waiting a month before playing because i don't want bugs. I don't think I'm playing anything day one cuz i don't want my experience ruined.
I guess the team will ascend from here...see what I did there? Okay it doesn't quite work but...ahem. This is very good news, yes yes.
I’m enjoying it so far, despite some rather nasty difficulty spikes. Love the look of the world they’ve created, lots of detail.
Well deserved, such a great looking game, love the level of detail and overall vibe.
Looking forward to playing it co op.
The art direction is phenomenal and the world looks fantastic. Top notch stuff. The combat to me is meaty and fun I really like it.
Ive only been playing solo and only ran into one bug were I couldnt quit to the main menu, co-op apparently has more bugs. Good game.
🥴but, but gamepass..
..is gonna steal away profits
..doesn't have enough subscribers
..isn't sustainable
🥴but, but the series s is gonna hold back gameplay and development. Look, the series s is no longer the lowest denominator anymore, that title goes to the steam deck
And kudos to the ascent and the devs. Beautiful game, for me, I'm loving it
Fantastic! Bloody brilliant game.
I think it's a great game, really happy to have it on the service. Kudos to a team of 12 doing this! That's about $415k generated per person, not bad! Wishing them much success
Great that it sold well, fantastic game. Finished it earlier and loved every minute in that amazing city. Really hope it gets a sequel.
Gamepass is so horrible. More success, so bad for for devs.
GamePass isn so bad,…….erm….
i’m suprised by the low critical reviews if i’m honest. i’m absolutely loving it. looks beautiful, SFX and music are absolutely spot on (gives me a Hotline Miami vibe in combat) the gameplay loop has me coming back for more. other than the fiddly menus and the online issues i can’t fault the game itself.
The world they built is truly fantastic with so much detail. They just need to work on the bugs now, and some improvements to the UI, etc.
8/10
I rolled the credits on it earlier today and absolutely loved every second!
A fantastic game and well worth playing 😁
@Nightcrawler71 There really are some nasty spikes aren't there! Thought it was just me haha Twice I properly hit a wall. Pushed through though and I'm very glad I did ☺️
Like the game lots XBX Series X
@SplooshDmg Hahahaha YES mate! I tried SO many different ways! I changed my weapons, Augs, skills etc It's great that it keeps your exp gains and pickups. Went up 2 levels and got some sweet gear while I tried it haha Got there eventually and had a real jump up 'YES!!!' moment when I did 😄
I am still early on but I am having fun with the game and have not find any noticible bugs so far (altough I would love for a scalable UI as it is pretty much Impossible to read at 2m from the TV). The artstyle is top notch and the gameplay is fun enough (but I would kill for a Run button...)
Awesome news... I hope they keep improving the game, maybe even create dlc when all the bugs are squashed, for which I would happily pay for.
Game is an absolute nailed on 8/10 for me
Gameplay is fun and engaging.
The world they’ve created is sublime and engrossing.
Why this got low reviews in some quarters is beyond me.
I still paid the $23 for it with Gamepass. That's not asking much to support the devs a little more. It's not like they wanted $50.
