This year is proving to be an incredible year for Xbox owners. Just last month Microsoft Flight Simulator launched on Xbox Series X|S and instantly became the highest-rated game of the year for Xbox on Metacritic. However, that time in the top spot didn't last long, as Hades has quickly dethroned it and taken the crown across all Xbox platforms.
Not only has Hades become the highest-rated game of the year for Xbox, but it's now taken the pole position of the website's all-time greatest Xbox Series X|S title, with a whopping score of 94 on Metacritic. This puts Hades just above Ori and the Will of the Wisps, which was originally in the position of number one on the all-time Xbox Series chart.
Here's the full top ten for the year so far across all Xbox platforms:
- Hades - 94
- Microsoft Flight Simulator - 90
- Mass Effect Legendary Edition - 90
- It Takes Two - 89
- Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 - 89
- F1 2021 - 88
- Death's Door - 87
- Hitman 3 - 87
- Yakuza 6: The Song of Life - 87
- The Forgotten City - 86
It's still early days for the Xbox Series X|S, but it's a testament to just how great this year is going as two titles have battled it out for the top spot in such a short space of time. We're still yet to see games such as Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5 and Psychonauts 2 launch as well, so there's still plenty of time for something to take Hades out.

I'm absolutely loving Hades. Played 5 hours of so far. 13 attempts made, I got as far as the Bull in Elysium before he killed me. This is easily one of the best games I've ever played. Loving it.
I really need to get around to playing hades..
Highest rated series x|s game of all time? Damnnnnnnn…
Just checked, couldn’t remember, all time means 9 months. 😬🤦♂️
I really like Hades but I’d put Death’s Door ahead of it. Amazing game.
@Xenomorph_79 same while I did manage to get one escape after about 13 hours? I can't see myself doing it all over again x amount of times just to complete the main story. Doesn't really feel like a slog but except for 'changing the difficulty' there's not gonna be much different for me to say I can enjoy it.
I did luckily enjoy my time with the game.
@oconnoclast very well put together comment, I agree entirely.
I'm loving this game, I've beaten it twice already and I'll keep playing it at least until Psychonauts 2 releases.
I'm a sucker for roguelikes, though. Spelunky is one of the goats in my opinion. Dead Cells is incredible too.
If Persona comes to Xbox just wait 😋
Like a few have commented here, I didn’t like it either. If it wasn’t for the hype surrounding it I wouldn’t of even thought about installing it to try it out. I suppose you’ve gotta be really into roguelike games to appreciate Hades for what it is but for me it’s just not a genre I enjoy at all.
I bought this game on Switch during a sale and hadn’t gotten around to playing it and finally gave it a try via GP and can say I don’t think I like it much. While the graphics, voice acting, and writing is superb like other Supergiant games I’ve played ( Transistor and Bastion) it is still a rogue lite game and I hate doing things over and over. I have not managed to escape anything and can see this becoming tedious and a frustration quickly. I might give it another try but I’m not in any hurry. I’m glad that this game is successful for them- it’s just not my cup of tea.
Loved Hades but it's massively overrated.
Agreed. That an indy game is so lauded hopefully inspires more even indy developers. I enjoyed Death's Door a lot more than Hades though. DD just had such a striking atmosphere. Almost Hollow Knight like. Really hope we get a DD sequel. @The_New_Butler
Enter the gungeon
Deadcells
Hades
Risk of rain 2
In no particular order, are some of the better roguelike, lite(?) I don't know, one of those two, games.
It’s just another hack & slash right? I mean, what am i missing here? Bash the buttons, move on……… yawn
@LordMonkfish love your passion dude!!! Im gonna have a couple more runs…….. see if it can change my mind👍👍👍👍
Made 4 Hades escapes on switch and now 11 on xbox. It is such a brilliant deep experience. Really clever theme, story and set-up. Well done supergiant games.
@Magabro
Got onto Rogue likes/lites (I don’t know the difference) due to Returnal.
Spelunkey is the hardest game I’ve ever played and got a few levels in
Dead cells is excellent too.
I completed Returnal (eventually) but the others I don’t think I’ve any chance.
Any tips?
@Xenomorph_79 - "I'm just not a fan of starting at the beginning every death just to keep repeating for a little bit more story. Simply got bored."
Yep. I had the patience for that in the 90s, but times have changed. Seems like such a waste to create a wonderful environment and characters but turn it into a shallow rinse 'n repeat.
I would put Hades in the best games ever made list, in my opinion its flawless.
Very enjoyable game but I'm really getting bored of starting again over and over. Not sure if these are the same people who made Bastion - it feels like the exact same game but without the starting again over and over.
I know it would annoy people but if there was a save point after each boss it would be much better for me - I think I nearly made it out at one point but if so then the game is very small. I guess without the saves they don't have to put too much effort into game design?
I do struggle to see why its regarded so highly compared to so many other games released over the last couple of years though.
I can see it is well made and it pulls me in more than most rogue likes, bit I still don't get the hype at all. It's still a typical rogue. I had fun through the first boss, but after the first time and redoing it once more I'm like ok, I'm done. It's just classic arcade play in a way, but that never hooked me on a single game too long.
@Hurblyburbly Spelunky is a roguelike, because there isn't any progression (well, not really, there are shortcuts, but they're not worth it), in order to beat the game you have to "git gud". Hades is a roguelite, because you unlock progression that can make further runs easier, so if you persevere enough, you most likely will beat the game eventually.
Either way, my tip for either roguelikes or roguelites is to keep trying. Enjoy the journey. It's not for everyone but if you're into it, just keep going. Those games are infinitely relayable.
For hades specifically, I suggest you try using the shield. It makes the game so much easier... so far I've beaten the game four times. In three of them I used the shield.
Read a lot of reviews that I would like this even although I don't like roguelikes.
It plays fantastic.
But I still don't like roguelikes.
@Steel76 I felt the same, I played a bit on the switch but didn't liked it back then.
I gave it another try on the xbox last week and I'm hooked, I played it non-stop over the weekend, while wondering why I didn't liked it back then. Give another go, maybe you'll enjoy it this time?
