A couple of months ago, the Nintendo Switch was hitting the headlines for a bizarre reason, as Xbox boss Phil Spencer (and others in the Xbox team) seemed to be showing it off in certain interviews and events.
While it remains to be seen whether there was any hidden intent behind it, Spencer has revealed the Switch on his shelf was actually a present from Nintendo president Doug Bowser, and that's why he's displaying it.
"The Switch was a gift from Nintendo. Doug Bowser and the team, they're obviously right up the hill from us - we're both in Redmond, Washington - and it was a gift from them. I have another one that I use to play at home, but that was one that they gave me early on when it launched. So, that's what that's from."
Spencer was speaking as part of the Kinda Funny Gamescast, but didn't outright deny that the Switch could be a hint for something, as it's been suggested in the past that its presence could be a sign of things to come.
We don't have all the answers about the Switch's place on Spencer's shelf, then, but if you're taking his comments at face value, it would seem that it's simply there to show gratitude to Doug Bowser and the team at Nintendo.
Do you think the Switch is hinting at anything, or is simply a gift Spencer wants to show off? Tell us below.

...and there you have it folks. The internet has been saved from exploding.
Carry on.
A shame it appears we won't be getting a Death Stranding release on Xbox from that figurine. But a new Kojima exclusive game sure ain't a bad consolation prize.
I think we will see something at x022 if there is one.
He's lying!! My insider friend on Twitter who's Uncle is a janitor at Microsoft said that they're porting Forza Horizon 3 and Crackdown to the switch for fall 2021 release!
@Residentsteve01 Seriously dude...
There goes me daydreaming of a Halo metroidvania side scrolling game for the Switch (spiritual culmination of that Nintendo DS Halo game that never was) and an eventual Master Chief Smash Bros reveal.
News just in: not everything is a hint, tease or indication of anything. The internet at large will learn nothing.
That picture on the left outside the room might be a hint...
@Doctorwhoooourgh ...that Phil deserves a holiday
Literally everyone I know has a switch, it's the best console around right now and doesn't need specs to beat Sony and xbox and just succeeeds by having an abundance of great games and portability when needed.
@Residentsteve01 If you had criticised the eShop, lack of on system standard features, and NSO I'd have agreed with you. But the portability, power, and lack of 4K are the far from being reasons to criticise the console.
@UltimateOtaku91 mine is retired, back in its box forever due to joycon drift and a glitch in the software that prevents me from downloading or updating digital games. I tried everything, including resetting it to factory settings and nothing works. And Nintendo is not officially in my country, so I can't just ask them to replace my console. I'm very angry at Nintendo and I don't intend to buy any of their products ever again.
@redd214 I would say that you are lying… but I can’t distrust your source.
@AlienigenX Don't worry, my trusted source has Insider listed in his Twitter bio, he's the real deal!
@UltimateOtaku91 my wife got me one for my birthday in February and it's not been touched in months. It feels horrible in portable mode and makes my hands ache, I preferred my 2DS. All the blockbuster games are still the same price they were when they released and I can't comprehend paying those prices when I have game pass. Begrudgingly forked out for BoTW, played it, finished it, loved it, now my Switch has nothing to do. Honestly do not understand the hype, kinda wish I was given a PS4, could have spent the same amount on games and got 4-6 equally good if not better experiences.
I wanted one for something to play on my breaks at work to help quit smoking and I just play on xcloud instead. Even if game pass were to come to switch the controls feel so horrible I would still use a xbox controller and phone clip
That’s a very nice gift, and why not, I’m sure he returned the favour with Xbox Series X consoles. The Switch is an awesome little machine, it sells to PC and home console owners alike, as well as Nintendo fans, hence its fantastic sales figures. I have one.
@UltimateOtaku91 The joycon drift is real. I’ve changed out the sticks three times. Luckily they’re pretty cheap. The third party games are inferior, and the first party games are few and far between. Mario and Zelda were good, but I didn’t enjoy them anywhere near as much as God of War, Gears of War, Ori, Horizon Zero Dawn, etc. it is the best place to play local co-op party games, which is cool, I guess. My kids love playing Pokemon and Animal Crossing on it, but it’s definitely in a distant third place for me. I AM looking forward to 2d Metroid and Bayonetta 3, though. I finally picked up Hades to play that and right after, it got announced for Gamepass, so I’m just going to play there for the upgraded presentation. I also hate Nintendo’s philosophy of rereleasing old games with minimal upgrades for full price. Sony and MS would get crucified if they did this.
@Residentsteve01 Yeah it's a valid critisism, but something you accept, or don't, on Switch - that Nintendo never discount their first party titles more than by 33% (Digitally).
The funny thing is it makes you play and value those titles - whereas I have tons of great games on Switch and Xbox I got for peanuts and I hardly touch. For instance I got Titanfall 2 for £4 about a month and a half ago that I've not even booted. So maybe the other companies (MS and Sony) devalue their big titles too much with regular sales? I still play Mario kart 8 Deluxe for some reason and it still looks great.
He’s a Gamer, I'd expect him to have a Switch. It’s a great system that’s massively convenient to use and has a boat load of great games. Why wouldn’t he have one?
I’m glad he could Phill us in.
"The Switch was a gift from Nintendo. Doug Bowser and the team".... "that was one that they gave me early on when it launched. So, that's what that's from."
Doug Bowser wasn't president of Nintendo when the switch launched. Reggie's gonna be pissed...
