Does your Xbox Series X happen to look like this? Do you use a humidifier in your home? Then it's very likely the two are connected, with multiple reports of this issue spotted over the past few months.
Various social media users have nervously taken to the web to detail their findings, and seemingly every single time they've confirmed they have a humidifier running in their house. Here are some examples:
Interestingly, this only appears to happen when using tap water with a humidifier rather than distilled water, and Reddit user livetaswim16 provided a very interesting explanation earlier this week as to why this problem occurs:
"There are dissolved solids in the water. Things like microscopic bits of rock essentially. Only the ultrasonic type of humidifier causes this as it vibrates the water so fast it gets pushed out as a vapor. The solids are not a problem until they are floating around and over time build up. Either use distilled water to fix it or use a wicking or hot steam type humidifier."
The Xbox Series S also can be prone to this issue (but obviously it's not as visible), and Sony's PlayStation 5 has also received a couple of reports of the same thing. So there you go! Xbox fans have collectively identified the culprit.

Those ultrasonic or “cool mist” humidifiers are garbage and should be outlawed...first thing if there’s bacteria in the water it ends up in the air, on top of that it leaves a residue on everything as the water flings all the minerals in the air as well...the wicking ones work great plus they purify the air some as they suck the air over the wicks and the wicks collect the dust and in my case smoke...
I have to use a dehumidifier! Mould is the bane of my existence so I wouldn't even contemplate using a humidifier
I didn't think you were supposed to use tap water with a humidifier as they can spread any bacteria in the water all I've the place!
@aduvky84 Sad thing is alot of people do. I work at a thrift store and one of the common things when people donate a humidifier is all the mineral build up and such from people using tap water in the device.
Always used filtered water! Silly people.
If it's on the fan blades, does this have any affect on the components inside the ps5/xbsx? Is there a "coating" on the motherboard, etc. Does it void warranty.
I get this after 3 weeks or so. No humidifiers or anything in our house.
The Series X looks so much better standing up..
@booker_steve Same here. No humidifier. I think this problem is related to the materials used on Xbox SX body. Similar to the famous yellowing problem of US SNES.
@Axlroselm Possibly, my house is probably just a bit dusty!
I have probably the dustiest, most hostile environment around. Godawful summer humidity, dust on everything in 60 seconds or less. And even I haven't seen anything like this!
I wonder if it's ionizers in the home that are causing this?
@PhhhCough Yes, it would coat the internals. Doubt it voids the warranty though.
Any chance it is mold release? I see this in action figures every once in a while. It's easy to wipe off but comes back in time. The fact that the Series X is so hot might just be speeding up the process.
Mine does this a little so I just dust it every day? I don't have any humidifier's or otherwise in the house.
A little concerning. I’ll stick with my one x for now.
@sandman89 Nothing to be concerned about. The issue was figured out by people using tap water in their humidifiers.
