Not to make you feel old or anything, but we just recently passed the 15th anniversary of the Xbox 360, which first launched in North America all the way back in November 2005, followed by Europe that December.
It still feels like yesterday to us, but in reality it's been a long while since we last played our Xbox 360 consoles for any significant amount of time, especially since many of those titles have been added to backwards compatibility.
With that said though, there are still many reasons why you might choose to play an Xbox 360 in 2021, so we're curious to know whether you've still got one stashed under your TV, or whether you abandoned yours years ago.
Let us know how long it's been since you last turned on an Xbox 360 down in the comments below.

I tried a couple of years ago, but pretty much all of my controllers were unusable, so I just put it back into storage and use XB1 BC.
5 years. My niece had a 360 off us and I had to set it up for her because a) she was 6, and b) despite being about 2 years younger than me, there are corpses more tech savvy than my sister.
Hooked up next to my Series X even today! I have my original XBox and 360 games on the shelf below it. Now, it doesn't get turned on every night, but every other week or so, I will boot it up and play something like Red Dead Revolver.
Is my Series X a 360 since it plays 360 games and as i understand it can use a 360 controller...if not then never as i never had it.
A couple of years ago but I regularly use my og Xbox, for that gen I either use my PS3 or One X/Series S
I think it was just a month ago when I started playing the Fallout 3 DLC and since I have the GOTY edition I couldn't get it working on Xbox One, so I just played it on my 360. The reason though why I don't want to play my games on 360 is because of the controller. The control sticks are showing their age, they're not as responsive as they used to be. Not to mention that the sticks are too chunky compared to the XB1 controller's sticks. So yeah I try to play everything on XB1 now if I can, but I still see some use of my 360 from time to time.
Totally off subject.
The internet so full of rubbish rumours, worse than usual.
All week the UK was supposed to be getting a PS5 stock drop today and out of the blue we got series X and S stock drop. Though some were preorders for 31st of January. I think some series S still available at Game UK, also will All Access.
Good Luck ๐
My kids actually love some of the kinect games and the 360 is the only place were they play. Otherwise I would just make use of backward compatibility
I turned it on a few years back to see if it magically fixed itself so I could play 50 Cent Blood on the Sand but nope, still got that red ring of death
I still have mine mainly due to the TMNT games on it and The Simpsons Arcade. I haven't turned it on in since I moved though which was about 2 years ago.
I sold mine after I bought Xbox One 2014.
I haven't plugged it in since I got an Xbox One. But I only recently put it away. That's because NCAA Football, Blur, and The Saboteur are not backward compatible.
I only turn it on for Guitar Hero 2 and 3 which I still play when friends come over. They really need to make those backwards compatible. I also used to turn it on for Scott Pilgrim but now a remaster is coming! Woo!
I still have my 360...more than one actually. But I haven't had a need to use it. I didn't buy an XBone during the Matrick implosion and shifted over to mostly Nintendo and PS. Then jumped back in with 1X, and with BC, just haven't needed to boot the old machine for anything I want to play. Everything supported is better on the new machine than the old machine rather than the inverse being true like ahem some other BC solutions....
I actually bought one before Christmas. I was tired of not being able to have all the games that aren't backwards compatible with Xbox One so I bought the 360.
I think I still have mine at my parents house, but it's been about 5 years since I've played it. I have some great memories on that console, but all the 360 games I still play are playable on my One S.
Still use mine regularly. In fact, I usually boot it up to download the free Games with Gold on it, so I have them on both my Xbox One and on the 360: instant backup copy...
@ralphdibny How do you place the Xbox 360? Standing or lying flat? If standing, wrap it in a big, thick towel, lay it flat, and allow it to run idle for a while. You'll find that it'll get hot, and the thing that caused the RROD, a loosely soldered chip, will actually fall back into place on the PCB, instantly solving the issue.
Of course, this is just a stop-gap measure, so it does need a permanent solution. If you have the skills, you can do it yourself, because all it needs is a tougher grade of solder, so that it won't melt as easily as the original solder.
@NEStalgia And what other BC solutions exactly are we talking about?
Always have mine hooked up and still turn it on at least once a week. There's still plenty of games that aren't backwards compatible and i have so many 360 games it would eat up all my xbox one storage.
Plus in my opinion the 360 controller is still the best
@ThanosReXXX Some VCR company. Magnavox Odyssey? Philips CDi?
I still have mine hooked up to my TV and it sets next to my Xbox One.
@ThanosReXXX cheers, I have seen you mention that before actually but hadn't bothered trying it because it is only stopgap (and I don't frequently have a hankering to play 50cent blood on the sand and Lost Via Domus ๐). I was planning to eventually repair it myself but I have never soldered anything before so my confidence level for such a procedure is low!
I bought a 360 in 2020, because MS ended BC program.
I wanted to be able to buy and play any 360 game.
So yeah, I still use it almost every week.
I got 9 XBOX 360 games on last 29 December 2020, but still didn't have the machine yet. ๐
I think it's just been 3 years since I last turned on my younger brother's 360, as I believe that last time I played a game on it was when we recorded a Let's Play of Diablo 3. We could have recorded a short video or two after that, but I'm pretty sure that was the last time we used the 360.
My brother may have played some games on it in his spare time but I myself haven't turned it on since due to the agony system seemed to be. We had been considering recording let's plays of Fable 1 and 2 via the 360 (which funny enough, a revisit to Fable 2 in 2016 was the last time I used it purely for personal entertainment), but we might just take advantage of backwards compatibility now instead.
@NEStalgia VCR and backwards compatibility? Either I must have been missing something back then, or it's an in-crowd joke, because right now, I'm none the wiser...
@ralphdibny Well, besides the permanent re-soldering solution, there's also another "without towels" repair option. It's definitely worth a try, just follow the steps. You already have a non-working console, so there's really nothing to lose by giving either of these a go:
(or find someone in your circle of family or friends who might have the skills to do it for you)
There's plenty of "repair RROD" videos on YouTube as well, most of them pretty extensive and hands-on.
Quite often. If the missus wants to use the x1 I'll just fire up the 360 in the game room.
It's been a long time. I still use my PS3 on occasion but I don't have any 360's hooked up anymore. A big reason for that is the Xbox One's backwards compatibility, the vast majority of the games I would want to play on an old 360 are on my Xbox One these days and with the X enhanced games they simply look and play a lot better on the Xbox One X. My PS3 on the other hand still stands out for having a lot of games unique to that platform, and my old 60GB PS3 is the only HD console from Sony that will play old game discs from the PS2 and PS1. Since the PS4 lacked any real backwards compatibility it has always stood out as being worthwhile to use once in a while.
I just got a 360 for a lot of games that are not on xbox one and I still enjoy playing on the 360 a lot
@ThanosReXXX cheers for that! Appreciate it, I'll definitely look into it when fixing the 360 bumps itself up the priority list!
Loved the 360, got mine at midnight on launch day, of course I don't have the original model now, but I would never sell the one I have.
It was packed away for a couple of years but I got it out during the first lock down last year and really enjoyed it. I just played some non back compat games, great times, great memories of that console.
Almost 10 years ago me and my friends fired up Rock Band one last time.
I haven't turned mine on for many years - about 6months-year after the Xbox One launched. I haven't turned my XB1 on since the day the Series X launched either...
A year and some months ago. I was finishing up asura's wrath with the street fighter dlc, awesome sauce!! And putting some good work on OutRun, xblive arcade version. SOOO fun!
@ralphdibny You're very welcome. Be sure to let me know whenever you get to that point if you've managed to successfully repair it.
I havenโt used mine since I got my Xbox One, I still play 360 games though.. As good as the 360 was Itโs hard to go back to old hardware..
Stopped as soon as the Splinter Cell games were playable on Xbox One.
Up till then I played it loads.
@ThanosReXXX will do! Forgive me if you get a random tag in 5 years time telling you I fixed my 360! Though with another UK lockdown, I may have time to get around to it sooner....
June 2019. I didn't have space for multiple systems at the time.
I play mine quite a bit. I have been buying up games for 360 and ps3 like crazy since they are so cheap right now. My 360 physical collection is pretty solid but I'm finding a lot are not backwards compatible.
I had a 360 up until I got an Xbox one 4 months ago, itโs still set up in the living room and the Xbox one in the bedroom
Don't use mine often but turned it in to make sure everything was working after getting my new 75โ TV in late November. All worked smoothly, but been thinking about getting a newer model, I have an elite and it had a RROD once, got serviced but fear it will break again... Would be a lot more at ease if I got a 360 S or E unit for backup.
Gave mine away to a relative to use as a TV smart hub/DVD player. Got my X1 boxed in the attic while I use my X1X.
I'm actually not sure, but 3-5 years sounds about right. Most 360 games I'd want to play are backwards compatible with my One X so I don't really need my 360 any more. That said, there are a few delisted games I'd like to be able to play so I might fire the good ol' 360 up over the weekend.
@ralphdibny Haha, nothing to forgive there. I volunteered to be informed, after all...
Mine's still under my TV and I turned it on in the last few months... BUT that is deceptive. I only turned it on to double check which games I hadn't played before considering what to do with it, I haven't actually played games on it in years.
Turning it on I came to the following conclusions:
I will be adding it to my console graveyard/afterlife soon, and will hopefully, one day frame them or make some sort or installation or art with it. e.g. https://instagram.com/framed_tech
I play some 360 games on series s.
I think I played more on my 360 than I did my Xbox One over the last generation. There are too many good games that I either haven't played or want to replay which aren't BC yet.
I used mine for ncaa football 14
all the time
tons of games are not BC
Actually have 4 360โs!
2 original white 120G sets
1 white 500G Forza 2 set brand new/sealed
These 3 are not hooked up
Still hooked up right next to my Series X Is my lovely 320G call of duty mw set with a 2TB external drive with about 630 games downloaded & ready to go- and with many more 360 games to yet buy & download that I got my eye on that canโt be played on Xbox 1
So why do I have 4 360โs you may ask? Back up for one reason, tons of games not Xbox One BC and with owning a physical library of over 700 Xbox 360 retail games, Iโm not taking any chances. Lol ๐
