The release of the Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PS5 this November marks the latest in a long line of console generations that looks set to provide game-changing experiences over the coming years.
Gearbox Software founder and Borderlands 3 executive producer Randy Pitchford seems particularly excited about these systems, telling GameSpot that they mark the biggest leap in console generation history to date.
"I think customers will realize how profound of a difference it is to have the throughput capability that these new platforms bring. It's just absolutely unreal. The leap there with PS5 and Xbox Series X is the biggest leap I have ever seen in the history of console generations. I'm saying, including the leap from 2D to 3D. It's going to change the way we think about every bit of our experiences."
Pitchford went on to explain that we probably won't see much of this in the initial next-gen launch titles due to the number of ports and current-gen games that are being reimagined, but nevertheless he's still very excited for what it means for Borderlands 3, which is getting a 4K, 60FPS boost and four-player split-screen.
"It's fricking cool, man. I'm really excited for gamers that are going to get to experience Borderlands 3 on the next gen platforms. I think it's going to be a really big moment."

In some ways Xbox One generation was a beta test for Scarlet. Lot of things that was unreasonable back then had been now a very obvious next logical step.
Randy always talks a lot of nonsense... This is no exception. This looks to be the smallest jump in console generations. I'm excited for my Series X but to say this is a larger jump than the introduction of 3d to gaming, or the introduction of HD is just utter utter nonsense. Randy Pitchford really is the worst thing about Gearbox.
This could be true, but I would never in a million years take this man seriously.
I'm sorry but nothing will beat going from 2d to 3d
Playing dragon quest 1 vs playing dragon quest 11?
Or playing cyberpunk 2077 on xbox one vs cyberpunk 2077 on xbox series X?
Tell me which was the biggest leap?
@pip_muzz I totally agree.
Time will tell, but I don't share their... optimism.
Yes, next gen WILL be a big leap, but its just not going to be that big of a leap in games. Computationally, the leap is big, but 4k is now becoming a mandatory feature that will eat a lot of those teraflops.
RT is amazing when you sit down to admire it, but as it is people tend to ignore reflections (although I do expect RT to result in some horror games that just could not be done before.)
At the end of the day, RT is not as big of a deal as pixel shaders, and the leap from PS1 to PS2 was just ridiculous, it was as if we jumped from the Atari directly into a Super Nintendo.
We will get prettier everything, but it will take constant revisit for our brains to remember the leap, while everyone that lived through it (hate I am old enough that this needs to be said at all) can remember the insane leap from PS1 to PS2.
@Valhalla91 "Playing dragon quest 1 vs playing dragon quest 11?"
That's not a fair example, you jumped 30 years to do that comparison. Be more fair to compare Final Fantasy 6 combat, to Final Fantasy 7 combat (cut scenes were just movies and backgrounds still just 2D.)
I'm just amazed he managed to say all that without leaving any porn lying around.
I will probably notice it more when I go back to an X1 game than I do now.
Randy Pitchford is a lying piece of sleeze.
And there is no way this generation will be a bigger jump than the one to 3D. It won’t even be as big of a jump as the one where we all went from standard definition TVs to HD.
Randy needs to lay off the drugs. Lol.
@VenomousAlbino
Well played. 😂
I don't get why he keeps saying that. Is he binded by contract ? Even if it end up true, zero percent of his audience will believe that. It just ruins his own reputations.
@Kamalen
Randy Pitchford’s reputation is already in the gutter. I am shocked he is still CEO of Gearbox at this point. The guy is trash.
I think the days of console generational leaps like 2D to 3D are gone. 2D to 3D was a monumental step. Going from 2 colours, to 8 to 32 etc was also a big steps as was resolution jumps which enabled sprites to look less and less blocky. Sound too, going from simple beeps to full movie quality Surround sound audio were big jumps.
Going from 16m colours to 1bn (8bit to 10bit HDR) with greater dynamic Range was a big step and we have photogrammetry in games now too - character Actors that are instantly recognisable and life-like, cars and environments that look like Photographs. Obviously if you look close enough you can see they are computer graphics - especially those in actual game play rather than the cut scenes. Lighting often gives it away and more distant objects too which will no doubt be improved by next gen hardware - but its more 'refinements' over what we have seen before.
Not to say that some things can't improve outside of 'visuals' - AI, Physics etc for example but we already have big open worlds without 'transition' loading points - like having to crawl slowly through a gap in a rock face, wait for a door to open, lifts etc although now they can pack more 'detail' into areas and getting across 'zones' or 'fast travelling' can be faster too - although I don't know if that is 'game changing'. It would be 'odd' too jump on a horse and travel across the map at ridiculous speed just because you can - maybe if you want to make a Superman game with supersonic flight, its easier now...
Point is, I don't think there is anything can really transform gaming to the same extent that 2D to 3D did. Some aspects can be more user friendly improvements - not having to wait to load in the next area for example. IF R&C was on PS4, it would get frustrating being in a portal for 30s+ just for a 30s on rail section in a new area before another 30s+ portal jump - so devs may opt to do that kind of thing but its not 'transformative' like 2D to 3D was...
Time will tell of course and I would like to be proved wrong so we will see what happens over the next generation. I am looking forward to it...
Same games, bigger worlds, faster loading and shinier graphics.
The jump from SNES to PS1 was much bigger.
Nah. From what I’ve seen so far no way 🤷🏻♂️
"Yes, of course we're spending these funds working on Aliens: Colonial Marines, it's not like we'd be siphoning your money to work on the other publisher's game!"
-R. Pitchford
I trust this man on his word!
Another thing to remember: this is the man who promoted and bigged up Duke Nukem Forever with a straight face.
this person must de insane to make this statment, nothing will beat the transaction of 2D to 3D, that was the bigest leap in history, not this leap this person claim and sugesting.
This is just rubbish, This is an incremental improvement. Yes, it will give us higher framerates, improved physics and it will look a bit better but it is nowhere near the advances from 8, 16, 32 and 64 bit and the move to 3D. This guy is a complete bonehead
i personally think playing something in 3D and then playing something in actual 3D (stereoscopic) or VR is a much bigger leap. also didnt xbox one have problems with splitscreen before requiring the extra local players to have a live sub or something? i remember it being ridiculously complicated to even use vs other console splitscreen (Not counting the OG and 360).
