An early, playable PC build of Dead Island 2 has been leaked online, allegedly via message board 4Chan. Various YouTubers have since posted footage of the unfinished game, and Eurogamer has reportedly verified the build is the work of then-Dead Island 2 developer Yager Development.

You can catch a video of the game courtesy of GamersPrey above, which is dated June 2015 and contains plenty of placeholder assets. Developer Yager was dropped from working on the game just a month later in July 2015, with the company stating at the time that its vision "fell out of alignment" with publisher Deep Silver.

Most recently, it was announced back in 2019 that Deep Silver Dambuster Studios had taken over development on Dead Island 2, with Koch Media CEO Klemens Kundratitz revealing more to GamesIndustry.biz about why the game has repeatedly switched development teams:

"Look, Dead Island is a very important brand for us and we've got to get it right. It's just a testimony of our dedication to get it right."

"It's a great story to tell everyone that it's on its third studio, but we like to be judged on the end result and we're really confident that when it comes out it's going to be a kick-ass zombie game. We'll certainly give it all our power."
